Guest51810
Anyway all this horse meat stuff hasnt bothered me as much as i thought it would. I dont like the fact that they put it in things and then write beef but i thought i would feel worse. Its made me think more about what i eat and im considering becoming a veggie. Id probably only last a week though!

Flappers263
Driven by a need to be profitable, squeezed by the multiples who are driven by consumers to deliver cheap....is it really any surprise that corners are cut and the ingredients are questionable....still why not eat horse? Or camel? Or donkey? Why do we eat pig? Cow? Etc.... The surprise is that anyone is surprised....
Ken
It's a fraud story, plain and simple. Nothing to do with health, horsemeat is at least as healthy and probably healthier than beef. The issue is that horsemeat is cheaper than beef, so the suppliers have been defrauding the public by giving the wrong ingredient (beef) on the packaging. Guest51810
Are there any health risks to us if the horses had any drugs in them? Like if a sheep or cow has been given medicine theres a certain time that has to be passed before they can be slaughtered.

Horse meat isn't sold in the UK as generally it isn't classed as fit for human consumption. There are drugs that are given to horses, bute, that if used means the meat is not fit for humans to eat and can be harmful. However, the meat came from overseas so no way of knowing. If it is Polish who is to say what standards were adhered to. Meat from horses is eaten on the continent and controls are in place re the drugs etc. But if it is dodgy who is to say what welfare standard were followed or if any of the horses would have been given bute at any point. digitalis
Appaz word on the street is that the reason manufacturers have been doing this isn't so much to outright con joe public, more to preserve their bottom line due to govt pressure over esculating food prices. In other words, the government was forcing manufacturers to keep prices low as the REAL jump in food prices which should have been passed on may just be too much to bear to the already overburdened UK consumer. Remember how food suddenyl went really expensive a few years back? Yeah well it should have been worse, much worse. By forcing them to keep prices low, they had to use an alternative to more expensive eat, hence horsemeat. You heard it here first. That's the conspiracy btw. Bobbsy
I've eaten horse (quite deliberately) in France. It came from a specialist butcher who did only horse and, unless my memory is faulty, it was actually more expensive than beef at that stage. I wonder what's happened that it can now be used as filler. As one or two others have said, I have no problem with the concept of eating horse; rather I worry about being lied to. It makes me wonder what other gems they are tucking away in food. It makes me glad I never buy pre-packaged food. Lasagna is easy; I'll make my own thanks. It can kill you. But if you have ever had conjunctivitis - the eye drops they give you for that would have a greater chance of causing it. But you are probably more at danger from the high salt content.
