  1. I cannot comment on the Hobart market Emj, Skani will have more of an idea. Personally I wouldnt like to secure anything without personally looking at it. Pictures are so deceptive and then you are stuck with it for x amount of time!,
  2. We love Ben Lomond and Cradle Mountain Emj! Mount Wellington (Hobart) is also lovely in the snow as well and on a clear day the views are wonderful. We are so lucky with the most wonderful scenery , all different, throughout the whole state. People think you can see Tasmania in a weekend, it takes many months to explore this gem of a state.
  3. You are right Toots we had a wonderful summer here and winter so far is proving to be glorious days and of course cooler nights. As we have said the seasons are just like back home and as we are also snow lovers we are so lucky to have a Ben Lomond close by.
  4. Welcome to our wonderful state! We live in Evandale in the north near Launceston airport an old historical Euoprean style village. My suggestion is if you love your cars keep hold of them. You will have 3 months to put them over the pits and re rego them. Service Tasmania is your service provider for rates, rego etc. driving licences https://www.service.tas.gov.au/records/?task=1114&topic=1730 ---https://www.transport.tas.gov.au/MRSWebInterface/public/transfer/transferAccept.jsf Regarding relocation costs, they are usually very open to bartering a tad, so try and cut a deal with them. As Skani has said back loads are popular and I am sure you will come up with an agreeable price, we did! ----http://www.tasfreight.com.au/ I would try and work out what it would cost to replace your items, the usual K Mart is here but no Ikea although they do deliver online now. I love the meat here in Tasmania, many good butchers who excel at sausages, bacon etc. and we do freeze the glut of fruits and vegetables which are plentiful and very reasonable. Regarding shopping, I am find it getting a bit better although we both shop on the mainland but specialised shops for gifts etc are in abundance particularly Tasmanian made gifts. Residents do not require ambulance insurance here in Tasmania -----http://www.dhhs.tas.gov.au/ambulance http://www.aera.asn.au/tq12/docs/tq12_quarrantine.pdf is useful and this includes information vis a vis bringing dogs on over. "tapeworm treatments etc) Dogs to Tasmania telephone 1800 684285 ----http://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/Documents/Importing_dogs.pdf Outdoor life is wonderful with the most amazing wild life. I dont think you will be disappointed, we wouldnt live anywhere else in Australia, cute pubs, wonderful colourful seasons and akin to many parts of Europe. Enjoy!
  5. The Yacht Club in the middle of Launceston where we are members. A great community spirit and a good bar and restaurant as well.
  6. Beautiful days, , the night skies are amazing with no light pollution . Cold and saw snow up on the mountains over the weekend.
  7. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4598818/Green-Outgoing-Passenger-Departure-cards-set-axed.html No more scrambling around for a pen! Australia's incoming and outgoing passenger cards will be axed as border security gets electronic upgrade
  8. It is amazing that even a medical Dr can stoop so low in his abuse and intimidation of you! As others have said, please get help quickly and rest assured that you will be protected. Domestic violence is now taken very seriously thank goodness and be it male or female it is not tolerated. Your parents in law / husband should be made aware that Australia takes these issues very seriously! They are knowingly breaking the law if any harm comes to either you or your baby. Personally Immigration should be informed as there are certain avenues to take against your husband. As Stormy has said I would make arrangements to leave directly if not for yourself certainly for your child. https://www.border.gov.au/about/corporate/information/fact-sheets/38domestic https://www.dss.gov.au/family-safety-pack The latter link is available in a variety of languages Very best wishes and please take care of you and the bubs!
  9. And if they code share on an international flight, the domestic leg honour the larger luggage allowance without any problems!
  10. Ring some of your local travel agents, they might be able to cut you some good deals incorporating stop overs and domestic flights. On line doesnt always mean good value. Certainly I do this from this end and more often than not we manage to get our domestic legs FOC when taking international flights who code share.
  11. Ditto, a lovely crisp sunny day and been walking through the Gorge today.
  12. Married an Australian , managed to secure the job I wanted and decided on an adventure. Living in Tasmania ticked all our boxes and we are both very content with our choice.
  13. We seem to be paying around $1.28 with a RACT/United card. It does of course vary from day to day!
  14. We love Laos and have friends who live in Luang Prabang and Vientiane. The Laotians are lovely people and many areas remain unspoilt . Love the French/Laotian architecture. I dont think you will regret paying this part of the world a visit!
  15. 83.5% of Bali's population adhered to Balinese Hinduism, followed by 13.4% Muslim, Christianity at 2.5%, and Buddhism 0.5%
  16. I am in Bali every couple of months or so and as others have said terrorism can strike anywhere. There are some areas I try and avoid but security is taken reasonably seriously there i.e. hotels, restaurants etc you and your belongings can be subjected to a search. The Balinese are a lovely race of people and in general I am very comfortable there. Traffic is horrendous so maybe take this into account when choosing your resort. Enjoy!
  17. Brrrrr minus 2 tonight, clear skies and wonderful stars! Both log fires burning with scented candles >>>>> I adore this time of the year!
  18. Emj, I wouldnt concern yourself unduly with this. Both my OH and I FIFO to different parts of the country/world and I personally did not have any problems at all with Immigration. It is extremely common to FIFO and Immigration will take into account your ife style, bills, commitment ,paper trail / Wills etc. Rest easy and best wishes for a successful outcome!
  19. We have an annual travel insurance with Australia Post which covers us for international but also domestic travel as long as the domestic leg is 240 kms ( give or take a few kms) and over from Tasmania (our residence). Give them a call they are very helpful!
  20. I had to scrape the ice off the car this morning but what a gorgeous day! Off to Asia tomorrow and the mid 40's which is fine by me as long as the air con is good!
  21. They certainly are not cowboys , we have used them several times interstate and to Tasmania. We have found them to be good removalists. Do express your concern to the company concerned and hopefully they will address your worries!
  22. We frequently go back and my OH has never had to satisfy anyone. BUT if pulled by Immigration then naturally one would have to show them proof of "intention"! It is very convenient not having to worry about a visa!!
  23. "maybe I was braver than what I thought....and the woman that was saying.." Life's short..live it " ..as thought....oh hang on...Help...!,......heart and head ..are arguing at the moment...?" Hello Di, I wouldnt concern myself with the teaspoon or teatowel lol I think if possible try and take a break back home and test the waters. After the initial excitement has worn off and having to face all the practicalities do you think you be become a victim to the "pingpong fraternity"? I wouldnt beat yourself up over your feelings , its normal to hanker after the love of friends and families and marrying a foreigner and living in their country is not always the milk and honey that is sometimes portrayed, particularly given the distance involved! My OH is very supportive and we are able to see my side of the family on a regular basis but I still get the odd yearning to be back home ..Christmas and famility events being some of those occasions! But life has moved on for us all and I think my feelings are based on nostalgia lol! ".I've had a lot to contend with from Spouse family and Children..but ..all I have is over here now". Do you have a close friend here in Australia that you can confide in? What does your husband and children feel about your turmoil?
