  1. Good luck mate! Construction here in Launceston is once again becoming very vibrant ! Hopefully you will find your niche and quickly!
  2. I totally agree! If you have younger children then you are reliant on school buses, distances to schools, the constant kiddie runs to various groups they belong to. Emergencies to hospitals can add imperative extra hours to ones journey to reach a hospital. Of course thousands do it but it wasnt our "living the dream" lol
  3. The City of Launceston! It is very much the northern city of Tasmania! albeit with a population of approx 90,000... The home of Boags beer!http://economy.id.com.au/launceston/number-of-businesses-by-industry/ The West and East Tamar are famous for the wineries. There is a lot more to Launceston then tourism!
  4. We lived bush for 6/7 years, surrounded by gum trees and river. A lovely house with stunning scenery! We were very careful with our fire breaks and bush fire clearance/back burning but we were never at ease as we did have a massive fire that passed our home luckily on the other side of the road, we were very fortunate!.. thereafter we were exceptionally nervous during the Summer months. We both hated the constant clearing up of acreage... gum trees (widow makers) limbs everywhere during high winds. I came to detest those trees and longed for weeping willows and the more gentle flora and fauna!~ Living off tank water and so reliant on wet weather to furnish our water requirements despite having what we considered to be adequate tanks, then trying to get the water cartledge out in adequate time! The constant loss of power during bad weather sometimes for days on end. Lack of infrastructure i.e. public transport/NBN, poor radio/telephone signals/hospitals etc... getting tradies out etc. We both travel interstate/internationally for work therefore the airport distance became a problem. Travelling at night was hazardous with the amount of wildlife on the roads, both for the wildlife and the car occupants ! You had to be more organised regarding shopping trips as it was a day out of your life. I think the isolation got to us, and we love having neighbours once more coupled with the gorgeous pubs and shops . You are so reliant on your cars.. here we can bike/walk and even take an affordable taxi to the city if you are out on the town. We tried it but no, never ever again... we both are very happy living in our little european village on the edge of the city.
  5. You are right, but I am sure the Australian scenario is so similar to the Scottish scene as I lived too lived in Scotland for a number of years and found the sexist /racist situation quite unbearable which imho was far worse than in Australia, ripping one off to boot!
  6. "He sounds like a traditional old fashioned Aussie" In my experience, the traditional old fashioned Australian, respects your privacy. but is there to help if required! We have never come across this scenario before and we have lived both in rural and major cities!
  7. To record/video someone when you are stressed could be slightly difficult and rather confronting. For a couple of hundred bucks perhaps install your own CCTV camera (they are removable for your next place) and at least you can have a record of what is happening when you are away.
  8. Very interesting job you have there Captain R.
  9. I think your "doubts" are exceptionally healthy! Personally I would not be embarking on having sproglets unless you both are very settled! You both imo have to work in unison regarding your future together. The usual thoughts about mixed marriages and having children & The Hague Treaty always come to mind and I would research all the possibilities /pitfalls/heartache before putting your slippers under the hearth. You can always sell and divide property, but children are a different matter! Pay attention to your doubts/concerns, family in your case your own family play a large part of whom you are today and it could just be that you are not cut out to live thousands of miles away! Good luck!
  10. For a young man new to Australia fresh from the Uk of land and honey, discos and women in abundance Perth might be boring for the minority ... different ball game for "many" people who want to settle in a relatively new city with a good infrastructure with their family, buying a home etc... having less flying time to Europe as opposed to the east!
  11. Very interesting job you have there Captain R.
  12. Recommendation for that red wine Starlight? always game to try new vinos!
  13. Cheers Simmo! Haytor? Dartmouth? never been it was on my lists to do.. doesnt matter if its an Aussie thread Simmo!
  14. Chicken I hope you say something to that effect to the staff concerned! Maybe we are just fortunate in this neck of the woods where jobs are like hen's teeth! The G & T sounds very acceptable though
  15. One of the best forms of exercise Parley!
  16. Had a master craftsman in today to measure up for colonial shutters, not cheap but a great investment. A trip to Bunnings , must say the women shop assistants are proving as knowledgeable as the men in DIY shops these days.. most impressed! Picked up some some home cured smoked bacon from my butchers and placed my Christmas order. For some reason, some courteous drivers around , always makes a pleasant change! Forecast -3 tonight so might be a trip to Ben Lomond to play in the snow this weekend! How was your day?
  17. And its getting colder, strange seeing spring flowers, lambs and snow! snow.jpg-large
  18. Dont know what you were on, but we are more than happy and content with our FIFO situation! Different strokes...
  19. Well done, enjoy your flight and relax you are nearly home!
  20. At least Gareth is human and makes mistakes
  21. Unless I am mistaken does living in Perth stop you from being British? There are copious amounts of places you can bomb off to off to for a long weekend if you wish from Perth, petrol is very affordable or specials with flights!
  22. The programme was horrendous.. I know its wrong to tar every establishment with the wrong brush, but nursing homes/ retirement homes " in general" would be our worst nightmare. I personally think its unhealthy having all "aged " massed together in an establishment and we prefer the Dutch system http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/drive/dutch-retirement-home-lets-students-live-rent-free/6351450 We often visit a mature swimming acquaintance locally in one of the Masonic villages for a coffee and personally they leave me cold.... if you think a forum can be heated at times, you have seen nothing when the 80's/90's age bracket have a go at each other! I think a damned good lawyer would have to go through all the t & c's before signing your life over to the many unscrupulous owners of some of these so called care homes... Dignitas on occasions if chronic/terminal would be one of my preferred choices. I will add that thousands of Carers are damned saints working exceptionally hard for little financial reward but its the owners that I am wary of!
  23. We pay $15 only to our GP Practice and then Medicare send us out a cheque in our GPs name and we drop it off to the surgery. Many bulk billers in northern Tasmania. Dressings, injections , bloods etc and minor surgical procedures are all bulk billed.
