  1. At the moment Toots we are with Telstra Wireless, there are so many packages available, I have to do some research before committing to a contract.
  2. I use Optus with no problems and my OH is a Telstra user. We are both pretty satisfied.. but I think Telstra wins hand down nation wide as far as reception goes!
  3. The Design Inn, High Street, East Launceston is a wonderful Christmas Shop, beautiful displays, always a favourite of ours with a great French cafe next door on the common and a wonderful butcher close by!
  4. Anvers is a regular stop for us if we are en route to Devonport, a delightful place with generous free samples.. the same applies to Ashgrove Cheese Factory. The Federation Chocolate Factory @ Taranna is also a pleasant stop although I dont like their chocolate as much, but they have the most beautiful Huon pine conference table cut by their fair hands. Always love the Christmas shop @ Richmond....Lafayette On Bridge...
  5. ...and then you get those like Bob J who is happy with his "lot" probably never has stooped over a 1 bar electric fire, guaranteed sunshine for the best part of the year, fish a plenty on the table, who wouldnt recognise boredom if you slapped his face with its tail... its a good job we all differ eh! lol
  6. The old adage supply and demand.. and in many ways Thatcher's selling off the council houses at very low prices with owners making their fortune is no different!
  7. We had a house in one of the mining towns of WA and an investment property all mortgage free ...sold at the right time and made a lot of money.. we were lucky we got out before the downturn. The first house was a company house bought for $40,000 and sold for $800,000 .... lady luck!
  8. Taking into account your very thin blood , thats why you choose to live in tropical Melbourne.... I too lived in Scotland at one time and it was a different kind of "cold" . Warm insulated, double glazed homes made living there very acceptable. The temperatures are consistent which you cant say for Melbourne.. I have frozen my socks off there before now, having started my day with a t shirt. I dont believe anyone lives in Melbourne or Tasmania for a constant suntan Parley!
  9. And we have glorious sunshine with the occasional shower but the temperature has escalated to 15 lol
  10. I have lived in a few places in Australia, I personally havent come across any noisier people than I have in Europe and yes I am an immigrant and have never been reminded of it. My solitary piece of Shatford under the Avon here in Australia must be exceptionally unique!
  11. K Mart in Launceston and Coles are open 24/7.. there is a vibrant night life in clubs/pubs with live music here in Lonnie and most of our supermarkets /chemists are open until 10pm.
  12. Stunning and the garden is a credit to you. Hopefully you can recreate your bit of paradise here in Australia. You have a lovely home full of character! Thank you for sharing!
  13. Northern Tasmania near the airport if you like the European village feel...https://www.domain.com.au/42b-logan-road-evandale-tas-7212-2012490411.. I believe there is a bus service also to Kings Meadows shopping centre which is approx 25 minutes by bus. There is a very vibrant Sunday market here for fruit, veggies etc plus a local butcher , several good pubs, a small store and other various shops. Woolworths and Coles also deliver. A wonderful community spirit. https://www.evandaletasmania.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evandale,_Tasmania
  14. I really dont know this area .....https://www.domain.com.au/unit-1-5-7-chestnut-ave-lutana-tas-7009-2013818125 but here are some of the reviews....https://www.homely.com.au/lutana-glenorchy-greater-hobart-tasmania
  15. Libbye, I am no authority on "strata titles" but I am led to believe that purchasing a unit involves a ST.... see ..http://www.hobartlegal.org.au/tasmanian-law-handbook/housing/buying-and-selling-real-estate/units-flats-and-townhouses. This appears to be something similar to Leasehold I think so will incur additional expenses for maintenance etc. http://www.cormistonlegal.com.au/services/strata-titles-in-tasmania-frequently-asked-questions
  16. You are welcome Libbye! I do think many mature persons make the mistake of going rural and imo I think the closer you are to all the amenities the better for you both. There would be nothing worse than visiting your husband/wife in hospital and then waiting in the cold for a bus and going home to a cold house. Tasmanians are very friendly people on the whole and I am sure you will receive community support but we like to be self efficient wherever possible! There are retirement villages whereby you can purchase a home (in this case you would be buying a lease and something to watch for!) i.e. https://www.villages.com.au/tas/kingston/oak-tree-retirement-village-kingston-6915#1078 perhaps dont discount these but do go into the small/fine print for all the additional costs with a recommended lawyer! This particular property is around $265,000!.... My advice is not to be fooled by cheap prices here in Tasmania, i.e. Queenstown on the west coast, they are cheap for a reason! Maybe have a look at ..https://www.seniorshousingonline.com.au/property/sale/16776/location-perfect https://www.seniorshousingonline.com.au/property/sale/3065/baldwin-care-vaucluse-gardens-retirement-village
  17. Its a lovely village but far too far from Hobart from you... 83km ...1.5 hrs away. Shopping and public transport will be extremely difficult without your own transport. It does have a good Midlands Multi Purpose Health Centre which enjoys a good reputation but in all honesty I dont think you would like the isolation. Ambulances from both Hobart & Launceston use Oatlands as a changing over point going north or south.... All those villages going north are delightful but not feasible without your own transport. There are no main shops like Woolworths or Coles, just an IGA and of course you are paying a premium for living in a rural area! Edited to add the Redline bus goes through Oatlands Hobart - Launceston vica versa! Fares are appro $21.50 return Hobart - Oatlands ! https://booking.tasredline.com.au/trwebbooking/EZBookingCheckStops.asp?TravelType=Return&sStopFrom=HOBART+TRANSIT+CENTRE&sStopTo=OATLANDS&sday=06&smonth=09&rday=06&rmonth=09&iFare1Pax=1&sFare1Type=f1&iFare2Pax=0&sFare2Type=&service=RS&iFare3Pax=&sFare3Type=&
  18. We too married and honeymooned in Scotland, the majestic castle and buildings are firmly printed in our minds, we also love the islands up there and the further north the friendlier the folk!
  19. Stratford upon Heaven of course, silly Keith!
  20. For sure it is stunning! We both adore the history, architecture and land. This is probably why we both only wanted to settle in Tassie!
  21. We didnt go out of our way to make new friendships, my OH has a large family residing here in Tasmania and Adelaide and to be honest we both were very happy to be amongst the clan, but we have also developed a few very good friendships along the way both at work and here at home, it all came rather naturally rather than going out and seeking.... Having school aged children always helps as you will be mingling alongside other parents. Enjoy your journey to Australia!
  22. Exactly right, we experienced all of this, initially we werent too phased then it became downright inconvenient!
  23. Thats so right Toots, they would get the wind up our sails for sure. Met a few paraplegic bushies whilst we were up there (gum tree victims) ! Now apple trees I dont have a problem with lol
