  1. Hi there Think I'm just looking for a place to rant or wondering if anyone can relate. I've lived in Aus for several years now & my folks come over every couple of years. I don't want to move back to the UK, however I'm recently very concerned about my mum and dad's health and I'm afraid they may get sick soon. Both are heavy smokers and have been since age 16 - now 60 and do not have chest X-rays. I think they would both rather not know if they had cancer. They look and seem healthy so they don't feel any motive to quit . They are both also covered in moles that look so suspicious . My mum has a huge black mole on her face which is new and I'm certain is not okay - but again will not get checked. I think because she is scared! I'm about to give birth to my first child and I'm terrified something will happen to them, but they don't seem to care about their health. I don't know how to manage these fears. Im worried I will have to give up my life in aus to return to care for one or both sick parents, and I feel very selfish in saying that!
  2. Perhaps the OP is worried about losing her Son to the UK ...a 'year' can turn into much longer! I would be offering to help out if her family can do the same... or look at a loan from the bank. Whirlwind romances can & do last, whatever the circumstances they stemmed from. I wouldn't be handing over a full $5k - if they think they are adult enough to get married they are adult enough to get the funds together .
  3. Thanks for that! And thank you for tracking grants on this thread it's been very helpful in giving an estimate of timeframes !
  4. Why hasn't she got PR by now if she had the child with her partner in 2009? In her situation any temp resident should be trying to gain residency if they want to raise the child here or look at alternatives if that's not possible. Scary that this could happen in theory though
  5. Do you receive the grant as a letter or email? Is it reflected right away in the immiaccount online?
  6. wow super quick! I submitted mine on 23rd Dec so you've given me hope congrats enjoy the bubbly!
  7. Hi there - I'm due to give birth to my first baby any day and had my Medical 2 weeks ago - I was all ready to have the chest x-Ray but couldn't do it when it came down to it. I think the risks are super slim and the level of exposure is on par with a long haul flight, but I still couldn't go ahead...mothers intuition perhaps! Anyway, you need a letter from your GP to support you having the X-ray, and you sung a form to say you understand the risks etc. I received a letter from Medibank shortly saying I would need to have the xray following delivery. I don't know if this means the processing of my visa is on hold now, I know of one person who was pregnant and PR was granted even though she hadn't had the X-ray. Good luck!
  8. No they would have to wait 2 years exactly before they can lodge a nomination.
  9. Sorry and you would have a cost of $1760 if you have a secondary applicant eg defacto.
  10. Cost to your employer for nomination - $540, cost to you for your application -$3520. This will not be refunded if the visa is refused for any reason - some prefer to wait until the employer nomination is approved before submitting their application but this increases the overall processing time (around 3-6 months currently). Medical will cost you approx $400 and you also need criminal record checks from home Country & Aus.
  11. Do you mean the Harmony test? It's available in Aus too (bloods are sent to US) and costs around $800 - $1000 & is 99% effective in picking up several trisomies compared to the combined test which is much less effective. Plus you do not have the any risk of miscarriage as per amnio. They are talking about rolling it out in the NHS in the next few years - dont imagine it would be available on Medicare for a long time, if ever!
  12. Congratulations to you too! This is my first too, excited/nervous there does seem to be a lot of variation within the public system. I'm in Melbourne and had multiple scans early on for various issues (all resolved now) and they were all covered. My NT was also covered & I'm 32. I trained as a Midwife in the UK a long time ago (didn't complete it) & find services so different here - both good & bad, but when I hear of how much some women pay in the private system I'm very grateful that public exists here for me and I really cannot complain!
  13. Hi can anyone tell me what the process is following Medical - I had mine last week do I need to do anything or is it sent directly to immigration?
  14. I agree, would be best to contact a MA in your situation as there might be other avenues open to you. There is a lot of scaremongering on here especially when it comes to pregnancy and temp visas. Things have a way of working out for the best so don't spend your time worrying and celebrate your pregnancy too
  15. I'm about to have my baby with my Aussie partner, any day now! Same as you we had only been together for ten months before I became pregnant. I'm on a 457 visa and have a PR application pending through my employer so slightly different situation, however I'm not entitled to paid parental leave but we are looking into the appeal system as advised by the family assistance office (once PR is through). With Medicare and the public system your maternity care (including scans) is covered and you won't pay anything. Will your employer assist you with to gain PR? That would be your quickest option. Otherwise you could register the relationship as mentioned, or wait until baby is born eg move back with your partner temporarily and apply for the defacto from there once your WHV expires, perhaps your partner could study through distance learning in the UK? Will he be able to obtain a visa for the UK? It's all very well being warned of the risks of having a baby in your situation and looking ahead - however it's natural that you want your partner by your side through the pregnancy regardless of how long you've been together. Pregnancy will draw you very even closer anyway Good luck!
  16. I had a read of the link you posted which States the waiting period does not spot to family assistance payments (which PPL & family tax benefits fall under) so if your visa is granted before the baby arrives and your wife meets the work test etc then yes you would be certainly be eligible rid the payment
  17. Have you been down to the family assistance office to chat to somebody? I went down today & I was advised to apply for my PPL, which will be rejected due to my non-PR status - but then if/when PR eventually comes through I can appeal and say that the chest X-ray held up my decision - I would just need an accompanying GP letter. They advised that this has been successful in getting the payment in the past so it's worth a try! You will still qualify for family tax benefit when you have PR and there is a newborn bonus from March 1st - it's only $2000 but better than nothing - although you would not be able to claim both this and PPL. They were helpful at the family assistance office even though their advice cannot be taken as gospel!
  18. How strange! They told me at Medibank that an X-ray may not even be required as I'm from a low risk Country (UK) but I know immigration require it - we'll see anyway - I don't believe there is a chance my visa will be approved before the baby is born which would enable me to claim Paid Parental Leave - but it would be amazing if it did happen. Oh and I also had to have hep b test as I'm pregnant. Good luck!
  19. Hi there - did your CO give any indication that the visa may be granted pre-X-ray? I'm 37 weeks pregnant & had my medical yesterday minus the X-ray. I'm going to upload the pregnancy undertaking form and have heard of people having their visas granted whilst pregnant, but the official line seems to be that you would have to wait until after the birth/X-ray for a grant!
  20. I had mine yesterday and at 37 weeks pregnant they didn't seem to make any reference to the fact I weigh as much as a baby elephant - my weight, blood pressure and height were also not recorded by the nurse so when the Doctor saw me she just asked if I remembered the results and wrote down what I advised her - so pretty relaxed really!
  21. Surely he wouldn't have been able to apply and pay for a 457 without an employer nomination? My employer sent my application in with theirs last year
  22. Hi - I was told by immigration that my application for a new 457 automatically put me on a bridge when the previous 457 expired - no cost. Send them an email if you want the peace of mind in writing. There was no issue at all and you still work for the employer on a bridge and it still counts towards your two years if you're going to apply for your 186 down the line. I didn't have a MA by the way. Good luck!
  23. Not correct. The 186 timeline post on here suggests that nominations can be granted much faster than 6 months. Infact some people have had their visa approved within 3 months of the nomination being submitted.
