  1. Only 5 weeks ago! She'd already been nominated though - unsure how long that part took, she's a nurse and her employer undertake a lot of 186s each year. She had the medical on Monday and grant by Friday. Herself and her partner as defacto - temp transition, without an agent.
  2. I wonder if MAs will reduce their fees since they can no longer claim applications handled by them in this way will be prioritised... My Sister had her 186 granted on Friday, it took 5 weeks in total from her application (Melbourne office) - her nomination had already been granted prior to her application.
  3. If you don't have a professional qualification in Nursing or Social Work for example, the pay in drug & alcohol services isn't great - around 45-60k I would say. However many services will be not for profit which carry salary packaging benefits which bumps up your take home pay. I worked in prison drug & alcohol in the UK and would not return to that work here as the pay is so low. I'm sure mos employees would ask for an Aussie qualification too.
  4. Wow come of those grants have come through quickly - congratulations!! Can I just ask - with nomination approval - how did you find out your employer had been approved? Did they advise you?
  5. We're sending employees who take Public Transport home early - and giving them iced water & icy poles on the way out!
  6. Hate it!! I'm 31 weeks pregnant and also have my parents staying with us in a small-ish townhouse (they're here for 5 months) so everyone is irritable (mostly me) and fed up. I stayed off work yesterday but came in today as it's cooler here, I hate feeling Cooped up at home. Under 30 is best for me - 26/7 just about perfect with cooler nights. Do you stay off work when it's too hot?
  7. I agree! I love bullying my partner over his annoying Aussie accent
  8. I used to like Australian accents, before I moved here
  9. Felt like Summer would never start and then bam - 4 days of 40 degree plus weather (not fun at 31 weeks pregnant) I've lived here 4 years and find the weather comparable to England alot of time, except it doesn't get quite so cold. I try to schedule a 5km walk in per day and often frustrated that I can't get out as it's too cold, too wet, or too hot. Autumn is lovely though
  10. Congratulations!! I'm shocked they would have fail someone for having Austism though, must have been a stressful process
  11. Hi there - can anybody tell me if the 186 application requires 2 x passport photographs to be uploaded? Also did anybody upload colour copies of originals documents rather than having them certified? I've done this but wondering if its worth getting them certified still as all immigration info refers to certified copies. Many thanks.
  12. Hi there - I've applied on my own without an agent & my part of the application has been pretty straightforward. I'm a little nervous about the nomination though even though my employer spent many weeks preparing it! I submitted my application a few hours after the nomination in the hope that it would speed up the process but in hindsight I do wish I had waited for the nomination outcome first rather than risk losing 3.5k. You could always wait until the nomination has been approved first so you would not be losing out (financially) in the case of a refusal. I think with a straightforward application, using an agent is more of a luxury if you can afford it, especially at that price!
  13. My Sister put in her application to the Melbourne office about 5 weeks ago (186 temp transition herself plus defacto boyfriend) after her nomination was approved. She's had medicals requested today which I think is pretty quick! I recently put in my application same day as employer nomination - feels a really big risk doing it before nomination approval. Really hope I made the right decision!
  14. Bless you! My mum has experienced the same but has 'lost' her two daughters to Australia. I didn't think she would ever visit but she is currently here on her third trip in three years! My parents don't have much money either but we help them out and in the future will do more and more plus make more frequent trips home. I'm now pregnant with my first and I will say feelings change and I haven't ruled out going back one day. I agree with technology now, contact is easy. I hate Skype but have a great mobile package and call/text home just like I did when living in the UK.
  15. I wouldn't be moving to Melbourne for the weather - Winter is long and cold (and to me quite depressing without the festive season) Spring is wet Summer is changeable (you can have 19 and rainy one day, 42 and hot the next) - doesn't really get consistently warm until Jan/Feb. Autumn is my favourite season here as there seems to be less rain and more sunny warm days. But no you can't rely on glorious sunny days even in the Summer. Still an amazing City though!!
  16. Hi there - if you are sponsored under an occupation in which you hold sufficient experience and qualifications, and a willing employer, you can apply for the 186 visa - direct stream providing you gain a positive skills assessment. You wouldn't have to wait 2 years this way. You would need a medical assessment (about $400), police checks from here and the UK, and the application itself costs about $3500. Current processing times seem to be 3-6 months but obviously vary on individual circumstances. Alternatively you can apply for an independent visa if your occupation is on the SOL (I'm thinking it wouldn't be a skill in demand though), or state sponsorship if its on a state migration list (again, probably not). I would ask your employer to nominate you for the 186 sooner rather than later, they can only say no!
  17. Your situation is very close to mine! I've been here 4 years on a 417, and 2 457s (first job was made redundant but the company redeployed and sponsored me in another similar role). Just applied for my 186 and hoping for a quick grant so that I can get paid parental leave when my baby arrives (though unlikely but stranger things have happened), my partner is Aussie so we can get the baby bonus if ours comes 2 weeks early as it is being scrapped come March 1st!! Hope you get your grant very soon
  18. There is no way around the 6 months - one of the reasons it is so hard to get work. I think in some instances you can apply for an extra few weeks if you are working on a government project or something but in your case I would say no. Like another poster said it is really hard to gain sponsorship...but not impossible if you are prepared to spend a lot of time and energy seeking it.
  19. Your occupation must be on the following list: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/pdf/csol.pdf If you're coming out with the goal of getting sponsored I would get onto it ASAP or do your farming work initially to extend your time here past 12 months to gain sponsorship. It took me a good 6 months of constant applications and that was a few years ago when it appears it was a lot easier. Failing that, meet an Aussie while you're out here
  20. This is frightening to read. I'm pregnant & my partner is Aussie - more and more I think down the line I'd like to spend some time living in the Uk as a family but it looks almost impossible! This policy could separate families...I think that is just awful
  21. I almost stayed in the UK for a guy I'd been seeing for 6/7 months - I'd made my Aus plans just before we met. I'm pleased I didn't as he turned out to be a complete wally and I love my life in Australia. However if he'd 'been my future' it would have been a much harder decision! I was single for a long time over here and I'll tell you what it's really hard to meet a great partner the older you get, if you've got a good 'un hang onto them
  22. I'm keeping an eye on this thread as I'm submitting my application next week - but I'm just wondering why people become so anxious when the estimated time given on the website is 6 months?
  23. Oh & did you send the form 80 with your application?
