  1. drove back to my old place and start working tomorrow. will keep everyone posted on how work is around were I am currently in the locker Valley.
  2. seeks not great. Try gumtree but you need to always be on there and snap up a job within minutes of it being listed. Okay so your in Melbourne Echuca has Apples/pears/ stonefruit / tomato Mildura has grapes Mornington Peninsula has strawberries and apples Ronbinvale has Grapes Sawn Hill grapes I never picked any of them but I am going to assume most of that is contract work. The above is what is happening currently or will be very shortly in Vic.
  3. I just realized its been a while since I posted pics.... Dont these people have a job, going surfing at 2pm!!!!!! Somewhere near the center of Sydney I think, rainy day Skate park on Bondi beach, not sure how young this kid was, but he was taking center stage. To cool for school
  4. Going alone - easy to get a job, more costs, more freedom Going with 1 or more - harder to find a job together, cheaper costs less freedom Going alone means your never alone if you stay in hostels, because you can easily meet people, and car buy cars/ get house shares together. Its a trade off.
  5. Chances of getting a job before coming over - unlikely unless you get a volunteer work/au apir. Using a travel agency- you will have to pay up front fees for a course before they give you a job. As for work, yes there is work here. You have to be forceful to get it though. Check job sites, make calls, boots to the sidewalk and go knocking at shops. Its not gonna come and find you. Good luck
  6. Money - I suggest at least £3k (excluding return ticket) Clothes Visa - 417 everything else is totally optional. You can sign up for free medicare, I dont actually have any travel insurance, but I didn't plan on doing anything extreme.
  7. I spent 5 days in Caloundra, its great little place, so is Burleigh heads. Dont think you can go wrong with each one really. But if you are working is Brisbane, the commute is gonna be very painful.
  8. Qator i know do them, may have to call them up. I found the cheapest way to get here from the UK was to get a 1 way to either BKK/KL then another 1 way to Australia using Air Asia. Usually £400-500~ depending on the dates you pick.
  9. I have a few friends in areas who I ask and my old manager. Gumtree/job search and this site are pretty good. Getting tougher to get a job these days though, a lot more people coming here on a whv
  10. Go Gatton in September, contracted Onions start for about 3months, if last year harvest was anything like this years. you will get a job the same day
  11. the wheat harvests would start around the time you land. You need to apply for them before hand though and ideally have some kind of machinery experience. You could find out where the areas are where the harvests will start and drive a car down and try and land a job.
  12. Yeah its pretty rough these days for them kind of jobs, if a post is older than 10mintues, forget it about it its gone. (this goes for unskilled farm jobs). The harvest trail is worth looking at, as a guide, it shows you what is growing where in what months, so you can move to said town and increase your chance of getting a job. Some farmers are still old school, they dont use gumtree or the internet, but rather word of mouth in towns. So it can pay off big when you visit a town in the harvest trail. Never go to a town to far deep into the bush, usually 1-3 hours is fine, because if you find nothing after a few weeks its easy to leave. Dont travel 7-8 hours inland though.
  13. oh wow disgusting, I hope they do something about it
  14. well the top tips for not spending money in OZ would be Drinking : be smart when you go out, buy some wine before hand, do some internet research and see what clubs/bars offer happyhours or free entry on what days, you can end up saving about 20-60$ her per night eating: if you get a job, make your own lunch, otherwise you could be forking out $10-20 a day for food. It all adds up. Live close to your work, so transportation costs are not so high, or buy a bike that you can sell when your gone. I have not been to Melbourne but im sure there are plenty of free things to see and do. Even stuff like playing tennis or joining a gym I dont think are too expensive. From my own research the biggest problem people on a WHV have is spending there money on booze and food. My guess is when they all get together its a bit of social pressure to get drunk and hammered, so they all end up spending alot of money. Buy toiletries from discount shops like crazy clarks. Stay in house shares over hostels, they work out cheaper in the long run. houseshare in brisbane is appox $100-150 week while hostels are like $25+/day then you have to pay for internet too. I'm sure there are many more but this is all I can think of as i have not ate breakfast yet. You need to put effort and a bit of discipline in to save money here, its not easy but its not rocket science either. I went out in Sydney the other week ill give a appox breakdown of my night out. -me and my mate buy two bottles of wine from the local (not goon) $10 each - I check to see what public transport runs 24/7 otherwise Id stay out untill 6am and catch the bus back. Thankfully Syndey does have a 24/7 bus service. - Bus into Sydney cbd $4.60 - I managed to find a very nice bar called that has an extended happy hour on thursdays. I spent $7 i think - Went to the Ivy club, apparently meant to be quite popular, free entry on Thursday, jam packed. $7~ in drinks on their, thanksfully at this point im tottally hammered off the wine I dont need to buy more - bus home at 3am $4.60. so about $35 for a night out which I think is pretty good in Syndey CBD. Could of easily been $120+ if I didn't check buses and caught a taxi back, or went to another club that you must pay cover or weekends. I had a great time too, just pays to do some research some nights.
  15. check on the usual hostel sites, and go by reviews. They all have 100+ comments, so it will be pretty easy to find which ones are good and not
  16. I took well over $10k, and im currently in the Sun shine coast, doing a bit of ginger picking, but that is going to finish quite soon. Strawberries are meant to start, I may give that a go, but no rush for me, im a bit lazy
  17. since you have a job your costs will be very small to start with. Now it depends how long you will be doing this job and what your plans are after, if your plan after is to travel for 3-6 months, you will need about $1-2k a month for that. If your plan is to find another paying job, $2-3k should tie you over. the visa states you need to show at least $5k upon entry, but this is hardly ever enforced.
  18. Hi Lushiev, Packaged tours are not really my thing, as I think they are too expensive. Their are a hell of a lot of people traveling to Cains all the time from Brisbane. If you wanted too, you could stay at a backpackers for a few nights make some friends and travel up with them. It would not be as organized , but much cheaper, and more adventurous. Just another option.
  19. check gumtree for house rentals, you can get a room in a nice house for about $120-$200 a week. Usually with 2-3 other people. Or you can get your own place and get others in. Although I think the best way for you would be to actually get to GC then have a quick look on gum tree and visit the areas you are intrested in. Always people renting rooms for rent in GC, well that's what I found. I stayed in tugun and Broadbeach for a few weeks each. Both are nice, BB was a lot closer to everything though.
  20. As my ginger job ends a lot shorter than I planned due to infected crop I will be looking for other work shortly. I have been told stawberry planting is starting soon in the Sunshine coast. I got off to a lady called "Sue", she is a contractor. Very nasty women, told me I HAD to stay in her accommodation as thats how she "makes her money" off backpackers. Their will be no work for 10 days but you must still live their and pay her during that period she said. I questioned and asked about the pay, she told me "this job is not about earning money, its more about me signing off your 2nd year visa after you are here for 8 weeks". I just hung up the phone then. Anyway if you are here or plan on doing strawberry picking, I would stay away from her, im sure their are many more who are more trustworthy and legit, but if you hear the name "Sue", I would keep away.
  21. so england are out in round 2
  22. Yeah you cant be too picky. Apparently ginger picking is meant to be rough, I drove 2 hours for the interview, which was "okay see you tomorrow". Then i used a wifi spot to find me an house, and tomorrow I start work. I will give it my best, hopefully I can last till the season is over, only 2-3 weeks. Feel like I have to work given my last 1 month of travelling, I still have to upload the pics, I will do it as and when. I wouldn't say that, my first job was without a car, that took me 5 days to get. Having a car gives you a bigger pool of jobs to get. more fish in the barrel, the better chance you have of shooting one.
  23. yes it helps having a car. The reason I got this job was due to the car. Another factor is when the add was placed, if it was placed 1 mintue ago, and you ring first, you have a 50% chance of getting the job. If its been up 25mintues, perhaps 5%< Get a car between 2-4 people, that way the costs are lower. Having a car will greatly increase the chance of you landing a job.
  24. The second beach down from Bondi Some kind of advert happening at bondi I drove back up to Brisbane. Started looking for a job at 9am, at 9:02am I had a job picking ginger. Starting tomorrow in Yadina, I hope its gonna be easy!
