  1. Hi Katy, You need to do what you want to do with your life, it is not right that your family are using this as emotional black mail on you. I'm sure when they get used to the idea they will be fine, but they are just scared of losing you. Perhaps talk to them telling them that you can skype video call them every week etc etc. I think the main problem your family have is not that you want to go to Oz, but the fear of "losing" you.
  2. Just to let people know I looked for a one way from LHR to Oz and average price was 650-700gbp. So instead I got a one way from LHR to BKK(Bangkok), then I got another 1 way from Bangkok to Brisbane for a total of 450gbp. Just to let people know of other ways of getting cheap flights
  3. I am currently in a rural town and my monthly spending will be under $550 thats with bills and rent included. I have my own thread in this section ill be posting up the spreedshseet at the end of the month. Everything you said is realistic, you will have to work a bit though, long as your a hard worker on the farm you will be able to earn money. Accordingly to the threads in this section I would pin point a few places in Queensland to go and work, as that seems to be the area in demand for farm work at the moment, maybe that will change in a few months though, do your research on harvests!
  4. hehe I think an ozzie would rather get paid $20+ sitting in an office or doing any kind of job than being contracted to pick onions for $40 a bin. It will take them 2-3 weeks to get to an earning rate of $20+/hr. If the price of bin went up to $60-80 then im sure you would see more ozzies out there. Untill then, I dont blame them for not wanting to do it. I wouldnt lol
  5. Intresting, Im not sure what to make of it, about 50%+ of the people working at the onion farms I have been at were backpackers, the rest were other immgrants and 1% ozzies. I do think with the current numbers there will be enough people to carry on picking for the harvests but the study fails mention how much profit Oz makes from visas and the amount of $$$ people spend when in oz on a WHV. A lot of what people save here in jobs, goes staright back to the ozzie people in one form or another (hostels, food, drinking etc).
  6. Ring up the national harvest trail and ask them for contacts from people the rural towns you wish to work in.
  7. I was talking to someone today and he said he didn't know the facts but have there been new laws implemented to allow you to stay longer than the 12 months for the second year. I did a quick google but found nothing, I guess it was just hear say?
  8. November - May Vegetable picking November - January Apple thinning November - January Stonefruit picking November - May Strawberry picking that is all for Stanthrope now. As for getting a car, I dont think its worth it unless your in a group. The costs are going to be to high. Alot of places say a car is advantageous, but alot of the picking places will have vans and mini buses to take you to the farm and back home. I got a few messages from people telling me to head to Stanthrope, apparently they had tree planting too, which I think pays very well.
