  1. Drugs have to be declared when you come through customs, so I would imagine they would not like to find it in a container. Also drugs do have a use before date and a few years supply may end up useless in a couple of years time. You can buy generic ibuprofen and paracetamol and its cheap. Not sure about the "Womens items" i cannot think of a problem bringing those sorts of things in a container...
  2. Normally we have a BBQ and a couple of drinks but if Australia day is anything like last year we sheltered from the storm and cleaned up after the Tornado hit us... Other than that it was quite a normal day..
  3. You will find the license has to be current, if it has expired then she does not have a license and you may have problems..
  4. Hi, Never been to Darwin, but you may find "Street advisor" worth looking at. http://www.streetadvisor.com.au/
  5. nice to see you back....
  6. I would suggest that if you are looking for property then get all your ID documents and references copied. you can then make up a few application packs to give to the estate agent. It look like you are efficient and organised. If they want to view the origional documents you can take those if for inspection at a later date.
  7. Humidity is really is not as bad a people say, it will also depend on where you live. I have been here just over 4 years and i can count on my one hand the amount of times the humidity has made me feel uncomfortable. QLD is a very big state and the climate varies immensely depending where you decide to live. The weather varies from tropical rain forest in the far north through to sub tropical and the temperate areas. it will depend on where you decide to live just how humid it gets. Where I live we expect temperatures around 20c during the winter daytime down to 5c at night with summer temp up to high 30's. You will be amazed how fast you can acclimatise to the weather, when i first arrived I thought the winter temperatures were warm, 12 months later I started to complain if the temp drops to 20c and after 4 years i feel like I need to rug up when the cold winter days of 20c arrive.
  8. I was always under the impression you had to be a citizen to work for the commonwealth this would rule out most migrants anyway ?
  9. When I moved to Australia I was being paid a private pension, I was entitled to the full UK tax allowance before paying tax to the UK, When I became liable for tax in Australia i still got full UK tax allowance until I filled in the forms to inform the tax office I was now under Australian tax for payments and then My UK tax liability stopped as You can only pay tax in one country (Normally). It does not matter where you live if you are a UK tax payer you get the UK tax allowance....
  10. We had 5 cars in a row trying to get out of our village...... I tell you it was total gridlock .......... :notworthy:
  11. I totally agree, Potential donors should make sure their family is fully informed of their wishes. I have ensured all my relatives know what my wishes are and if a donor has expressed a wish to donate then it should be legally enforceable.
  12. You cannot donate blood in Australia if you were in the UK during the mad cow episode, that rule is enforced by the red Cross who collect the blood. You CAN donate organs as this is looked after by the government. its a stupid situation especially as incidents of humans showing any signs of mad cow is continually dropping and no epidemic of the human variant every materialized,
  13. I think if you wish to leave Australia then you have apply for a different bridging visa and you need a good reason to be traveling, not sure if Holiday would be accepted. I am sure someone with more knowledge than me will be along with a definitive answer.
  14. Hi, Visa type will all depend on your occupation and what visas would be available to you. Have you thought about a Working Holiday visa? That will allow you to visit Australia for 12 months (up to 2years if criteria met). You could do some temporary work to finance your visit. Take a look around and decide if the life would suit you and where you would like to live.
  15. Ignore her, and just get on with enjoying your life, she obviously has nothing better to do, I have never had this happen to me, in fact I find its normally the opposite and neighbours tell us to use their bin if it has room in it....
  16. She will have to get another UK passport, you inform immigration of the new passport number and the visa is moved to the new passport electronically. You have to be in Australia for 4 years before you can apply for citizenship...
  17. I have lived in QLD for the last 4 years both in town and the outback and I have not seen or witnessed any racism and non of my mixed race friends have ever commented on racism, obviously I cannot guarantee you will never come across racism but in my honest opinion I do not think you would have any problems. Like Bob I actually live in the state! I hope everything works out for you do not get overly concerned about things, I am sure you will find the locals welcoming and friendly wherever you decide to move to.
  18. I believe it is all done through Australia post now.... Then they send off the application and you wait for the Passport. Costs an arm and a leg I believe
  19. Hi, When I applied my wife was in Australia and I was in UK, proving the relationship was not to difficult, copies of telephone bills showing calls to each other, the same with Skype calls. Statements from friends and relatives to show they considered us as a married couple and that we had a genuine relationship. Go into detail as to why you have been apart, With us it was because my wife moved over to look after a relative and i followed after gaining visa. if either of you get mail that is jointly addressed to the both of you, (Bills invitations stuff like that) Insurance policy that shows your partner is the beneficiary, Wills, that show you and your partner are beneficiary of the will as a partner. Just keep anything that shows you are both in a relations ship "To the exclusion of all others" Hope this helps a little....
  20. Get your new passport and inform immigration of the details, your visa will be transfered to your new passport number. You do not need to pay for new visa. they do not put a new sticker in the passport unless you ask for one and i believe there is a charge for the sticker. otherwise it is electronic checking of passport and no new sticker is required. Once your visa is 5 years old you need a residents return visa, (until then you can leave and enter on your visa with no problems). to move in and out of the country, not a problem and issued very quickly normally. The visa you hold allows you to live here permanently but to move in and out of the country after 5 years you need to be a citizen or a RRV holder.
  21. Now thats a good question...... Its on the corner of Kangaroo ave and Welsbury Parade. Near to the Doctors, chemist and IGA ( I think) It was called something like Passage chip shop? We would get our fish and chips and walk over the road across the car park and sit on the sea front. I think it was $5 for fish and chips, but that was nearly 5 years ago. Not been there for a couple of years now....
  22. When we lived there we would go to Bongaree sea front and buy fish and chips then sit on the benches overlooking the passage and looking towards the bridge......... Ahhhh Heaven :notworthy:
