  1. We cruised out of Freo a year or so back. Freo is a beaut place, and we will go back there. Met up with some friends from back in Wales there, and had a nice meal down on Fishermans Wharf. Stayed at a lovely apartment close to the cruise terminal, and an easy walk to the town. The cruise was the widest one we have been on, with people getting put off at every port we stopped at between Freo and Singapore for infringing the ships rules.
  2. Yes, I can recall Bob Monkhouse on the Golden Shot, as well as Charlie Williams, who seemed to struggle on the show. Recently met a chap from Rhyl and the accents were discussed. He seemed to think the accent change was from Rhyl onwards, but I think that it changes from Llandudno on. Cause is a huge influx of retirees fromthe Liverpool, Manchester area settling on the coast. Head down towards Anglesey and the Welsh accent is much more evident.
  3. Wagga is only a 6 hour drive from the Mornington Peninsula, so uless you want to see anything there, I would go further. Not sure why you would take that route. We used to head straight up the Newell Highway. We usually aimed for Dubbo for the first night, the the GC the second night. If you want to take in the Parkes telescope or the Dubbo Zoo, longer of course. Coast road to Sydney drive is OK, but we used to do it with one stop at Coffs. Also, as has been mentioned, the Princess Highway back to Melbourne rather than the Hume if you have no time constraints. If you decide to take the Hume, divert to Canberra for a couple of nights.
  4. Yep, just like in the UK.
  5. Spot on Quinkla. I can recall exactly the same in the UK when the company I was working for, (RTZ), brought in American managers to make changes. They soon learnt that it was not non unionised Americans they were dealing with. The workplace out here has changed in the 33 years that I have been here, and it will continue to evolve, but it will not happen overnight, with the people coming in and telling people how things should be done, and wanting it to happen there and then.
  6. The OP asked for thoughts on it, and that is what I gave. If she does not feel guilty, why is she posting on here? She does not say that her son asked her to go with her, so yes, she is being unreasonable.
  7. I am going to agree with your Hubby on this one. You say that he has been visiting you for the past month, so did he come out from the UK all on his lonesome to visit? Did you go back there to escort him out here? He is a grown man, an adult, and certainly should not need you to "deliver him safely to the family". As far as your partner feeling neglected, I can understand you putting in a lot of effort with your son, so that is not an issue. He is being petulant on that, but certainly not on you and your reason for heading back to the UK for 5 days. So, if you do go and "deliver him safely" and after 5 days come back, then a few days later a blood relative passes away, do you pack your bags and head back again? Time for you to get real about things Kerry.
  8. Hi Elven. Have a look at seek.com for jobs. Where you end up living will depend much on where you will be working. It would be no good living in the Eastern suburbs if either you or your Hubby ends up working on the far side of the city. If he ends up doing contract work where there is a need to move around, they usually pay travelling money to cover fuel. Eastern suburbs is fine. If you want more advice on suburbs, post for information on the "Life In Victoria" page which has a link at the bottom of this page. All the best to you with your plans.
  9. I did not waste my time watching it. I have better things to do than to listen to someone in the public eye "bearing his soul". His life is his business, so I am darned if I can understand someone putting themselves out there telling all when they have absolutely no need to.
  10. Same here. I have a heavy jacket but rarely wear it. Actually bought it to wear on an Alaska cruise. Normally when out and about during the Winter months I wear a lightweight jacket over a polo top, and often wear shorts. If the wind chill drops the temp down a bit, I will wear jeans.
  11. Try the party shop across the road to Vic Market in the city.
  12. Just make sure you have international as part of you plan. Dial 001144 plus the UK number, making sure that you drop the 0 at the beginning of the UK number.
  13. We will be back there in just over a week, for 3 1/2 weeks. Main reason is to attend a Naval College reunion, and then to meet some family members who I have never met, and only found out about while carrying out family research. In our early years out here, we averaged a trip back there every 5 years, mainly so that our children could get to see their grandparents and other family members.
  14. We have flown Malaysian many times over the years, with no problems. We have always found the service excellent, the food excellent, and we will continue flying with them.
  15. Return fare per person. Price to fly into Dublin is far cheaper than flying into London or Manchester. Crazy thing is, is that the last time we flew a few weeks ago, we priced the fare from London, then Dublin departures, and it was much cheaper from Dublin, even though we caught the exact same flight as we would have if we had flown from London. The flight from Dublin was a code share with Malaysian. Had to change planes in both directions in London. If you are willing to sacrifice a little of your time, it is much cheaper.
  16. JD, get to a Doc to have it checked out. Do not leave it hoping it will go away. Reason I say that is that I had a minor stroke about 6 years ago. Scans showed that I had been having what the specialist called "blind strokes" for some time, and when I queried how I would recognise that I was having one of them, he said that it could just be a bad headache. Further to that, only yesterday I called an ex workmate who I had heard had taken ill 3 weeks ago when we were away. He had had a bad headache for a couple of days, so went to the Doc. Turns out that hehad suffered a stroke. It hadnot affected his body in any way, only his memory. He goes for another MRI tomorrow. Good luck. I hope that it is nothing serious, but it is well worth getting it checked by the right people.
  17. We are paying $1174 return with Malaysian Air, leaving on the 10th of June to Dublin, and returning on the 5th of July. Price would have been a lot more if we came back after that date, or if we flew into a UK airport. Even taking ferry fares from Dublin to Holyhead into consideration, it is far cheaper. Car hire is costing us $559 for a compact for 20 days.
  18. Hi PP. Try putting the same message in the Life In Victoria section. Link is at the bottom of this page.
  19. Do not worry about your daughter and changing schools. Armed forces kids normally have to change schools every couple of years when the parent is redeployed. As has been pointed out to you, they are resilient, and soon make friends. There is no way that I would have ever contemplated the journey we made without my wife and children at my side.
  20. I attempted to track a parcel sent to the UK a few months ago using the number on the receipt, and was unable to. I went to my local post office, and asked why I could not, and they said the tracking was not for international post, only within Australia. I asked why I had paid the extra money for, and they said that was only to prove that it had been delivered and accepted at destination.
  21. The scent of gumtrees. Several beautiful beaches a few minutes drive away. Cars that run on LPG with it available at almost all service stations. The crazy laugh of the Kookaburras. Rosellas and Lorikeets in the garden. Tree ferns. Compulsory superannuation. Melbourne trams. The weather. Free use BBQ's in nearly all parks. I could go on and on, but these are just a few of the things that I love about Australia.

    Snakes

In the 22 years we have lived on our 2 1/2acres, I have seen one snake, and a neighbour once came to tell me that he had seen one crossing the road onto my property. If you see one, back off and leave it alone. If it stays around, call the council and they will arrange for a snake catcher to come and remove it. Advice given re keeping your grass cut is good. And yes, watch out for those Drop Bears in the trees, especially during the mating season which runs from January through to December.
  23. 1. 64. 2. Somerville Victoria. 3. 32 years. Came out in October 81. 4. As far away from there as possible.
