  1. Know your auction rights. http://www.lawyersconveyancing.com.au/faq/auctions-faq/
  2. First year nursing students at Flinders University in Adelaide are outraged after being forced to resit a compulsory subject that's been described as a scam. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2664289/Students-forced-pay-750-repeat-nursing-course-failing-correctly-answer-How-does-PRINTING-cost-university-quiz.html#ixzz35Qp4nN9T Students forced to pay $750 to repeat nursing course after failing to correctly answers like 'How much does PRINTING cost?' on university quiz. The exam requires a 100% pass rate.
  3. Are there any passive home builders in Melbourne?
  4. Total Americanization of Medicare is under way. The irony of people not being able to go to the doctor unless they can afford to pay into the biggest medical research fund in the world is lost on these pollies. Australia is just 1/350 of the world's population, why do we have to fund such a large research fund anyway, that will mostly benefit international pharma companies? The cost of people not going to the doctor is going to be very expensive in the long term.
  5. There is some confusion about debt. Government Debt was pretty stable until 2008 when it suddenly from under $100bn to $430bn in 2013 (now stands at $21,000 per head of population). The link below is a good guide to what is roughly happening. http://www.australiandebtclock.com.au The real news is that Total Australian Debt is close to $4.8 trillion at present, up from about $1.5 trillion in the early noughties, that equates to $212,0000 per head of population. Politics aside, all debt needs to be reigned in, we deal with it now in a sensible manner or just weight until the bubble bursts.
  6. You broke the law by wearing no helmet, but the method of accumulating fines thereafter seems wrong. Don't know your whole story but the Police should have stopped you immediately for the first offense, rather than endangering your life by allowing you to travel further on a bike with no helmet, presuming that you would go on to commit further revenue raising offenses. Seek legal advice.

    Welcome in Nigella

Nigella has admitted under oath to being a class A user, not much else US authorities can do but cancel her visa. Yes many celebs do drugs, but they have been fortunate in never having to publically admit it in a court of law.
  8. 1. At present mortgages are in the 5% range. Does anyone recommend a realistic percentage where interest rates on mortgages could rise to say in the next say 10 years? Is 7% about to be expected or could it ever reach say 10%? 2. Also what is the monthly cost of mortgage life insurance that pays your mortgage off in full the event the mortgagee dies? 3. One final question, what is the maximum after tax salary percentage that one would recommend using to pay down a monthly mortgage?
  9. There is a general indifference to lightning in OZ. I have seen sport teams continue training or playing a game even when bolt lightning is around them. Maybe nobody wants to be seen to be the first person to stop, however there is a real chance that some day a player or group of players are going to come off worse if they ignore the risk.
  10. The difference between the UK and OZ is not the outside weather, it's the inside temperature of houses. Even new builds normally come with a single split air conditioning/heating system in the living area. The rest of the house will then reflect the outside temperature(+ or -) depending on the time of year, so can feel like it's freezing in winter and hot in summer. In winter leather shoes/ goods can get a white fur on them and clothes tend to get damp(from the lack of heat). There is absolutely no reason not to have well insulated temperature controlled houses in OZ. However very high land values and expensive labour rates allow for cheap structures/materials in building. That's not a complaint, just the way it is.
  11. The big frustration with CarSales is that it can be very difficult to find out the name of the car dealer selling a specific car unless you hand over your details via a phone call or entering your contact details. That applies for each and every car you want to view. Also you cant see a dealers inventory either. Better off going direct to dealership websites and seeing complete inventories in your local area. Check your local newspapers for special offers as well.
  12. Turns out Indonesia was spying on Australian officials as well. Only Abbott has the balls to stick it to Indonesia, a leader needs to be strong and non-apologetic for something that all sides are doing. Enough with all the years of faux tolerance by Labour, it's refreshing to see a Abott as a leader being patriotic and doing his elected duty. He needs to get tougher with Indonesia as they are directly allowing their country being used as a launch pad of illegal activities into Australian waters and allowing so many people to their watery graves in death boats. Now is not the time to be spineless.
  13. "If my telephone was intercepted when I was Prime Minister, all that anybody would have heard would have been praise for president Obama," Gillard said. A breach of Australian national security, potential loss of national competitiveness and direct access to both public & private confidential information is met by such a birdbrained response. The mind boggles.

    Gas BOOM ahead

A gas boom will be excellent for the economy, energy costs need to come down in line with the US to ensure manufacturing remains competitive. It's great to have a strong economy but to sustain the current socio economic path Australia has to adopt to gas fracking model as a nation building business model. It looks like the current government recognizes this.
  15. Parents should take full accountability for allowing their kids to visit any website on the web. The web is a dangerous place for kids and if parents were genuinely concerned they would have filters in place and supervise their kids at all times. Allowing kids access to all websites is like allowing your kid to jump in a cab that offers to take them to kings cross at 1 in the morning. Websites must play their part, but the focus on this business being run by Latvian tech entrepreneurs is a bit rich and discriminatory. Facebook has had the same problems, but I guess that it is run by more respectable US citizens! This attempt to inflict crude censorship on business by irresponsible parents is staggering. But I guess a lot of families treat the internet as a free drive by creche nowadays.

    Guns in Australia

Legal gun ownership seems to have bugger all to do with the homicide rate. Illegal guns are responsible for the majority of murders, just like the US. Here in OZ the homicide rate by gun is also less than 20%, see http://www.aic.gov.au/statistics/homicide.html
  17. George Louis Costanza and the next boy will be called Kramer.
  18. I guess that they will also refuse business from all overseas visitors and migrants, as they can't have it both ways. They need to put up signs to warn overseas customers to stay out.
  19. Excellent article, Australia as a nation, needs to question their exchange of freedom for perceived protections, life becomes sterile when you are nannied to death. For instance, it's fascinating how inaccessible the ocean is around Australia. Traveling around NZ you drive on the beach, park on the beach, go down any road and see beautiful coastal waters. Our limited experience here is you will end up in a car park where there are lots of bushes and no ocean visibility, then you will have to walk through some bushes where some conservationists have planted the sand dunes and restricted access to walkers n the name of preservation. Holding back the tide so too speak. Even along coastal routes they are "re-vegetating" everywhere in the name of preservation.
  20. Property sales and demand are picking up across Australia. Hopefully, the new building forecasts are gradual, rather than boom style growth. Australia is entering a new economic cycle. There has been a levelling off in mining, which to a large degree needed to happen but other aresa like agriculture are picking up the slack. In 2013 Asia's middle class is now 500 million. By 2035 the middle class of Asia will be 3,000 million, yes 3 bn people on Australia's door step will drive demand for dairy, meat protein etc. Btw, that same population would live here in a heart beat given the opportunity. The queue of investors with $5million for the investor visa is growing. Also, the population of Australia is projected to grow to 40 million by 2050, up from 23 million today, that is close to a 75% increase in numbers in less than 30 years.
  21. Sorry, meant recovering from bottoming out, yes peak prices are way off. That's not going to help the guys you mentioned, investors have already been scared off by greens and high production costs. Recovery will not be quick, but coal is not dead in the water as some would have you believe.
  22. Coal prices are under pressure from three areas. A revolution in shale gas, the demonization and fleecing of coal by green groups & inward looking governments(carbon tax goes up to $24.15 per ton on Monday) and a perception derived from that demonization that consumption is in decline. Coal prices has recovered recently as shale gas is proving to be expensive. Nothing in the past could compete with coal and nothing in the forseeable will either. Cheap reliable energy thrives the nations that understand this. Check out the map below to get insight into the future demand for coal and an understanding why those countries remonstrating coal are becoming irrelevant. http://jonova.s3.amazonaws.com/graphs/energy/global-coal-fired-proposed-plants.gif
