  1. If you leave an endowment policy in the UK and it matures say in 5 years time and you live in OZ. Will you have to pay Australian tax on this when it matures and you transfer the funds over to OZ?
  2. You have the just answered your own question regarding connectedness. It sounds as if you tried to take the UK to Oz. when in Rome the saying goes...
  3. WH Smiths have also had it, mainly due to supermarkets selling stationary and magazines. The only thing keeping them open is if they have a post office located in their store. I can either see, boots, semi chem or super drug also being hit - as again, the supermarkets are selling their sole products. On the positive side, with all this shopping online, the need for couriers will increase. So maybe this will be an expanding market as we all live in our little bubbles.
  4. I can't believe Holland and Barratt are still open, health foods can easily be bought online. If amazon decide to move fully into the Oz market then I think that will be a game changer.
  5. With all these shops closing, do you think that the UK high street and shopping centres are never going to look or be the same?
  6. Yes, UK. W ould be good to hear Aussie views on the retail side down under also.
  7. What retail chain do you think will disappear next?
  8. Thanks. I am unsure whether Super comes out of the salary or is on top of the salary. If it comes out of the salary then so will the car. And how much does a car cost that can be variable.
  9. I got my solicitor, they never charges a dime. So I put a tenner in the charity box at the reception.
  10. Thought I was buying beef but it turned out to be horse...
  11. You can buy Bundaberg Ginger Beer in Costco and sometimes Tesco in the UK. However you can't get Bundaberg Rum :jiggy:
  12. Salary package of 165k, including superannuation and car.
  13. Currently earn a salary in the region of 36k per annum. Been offered a position in OZ for 165k. Will I notice a difference?
  14. The UK is in a bad way at the moment. Take a walk down any high street and you will see doom and gloom. Even large shopping centres and retail parks have lots of empty premises. In my local town we have mostly card shops, pound shops, pawnbrokers and mobile phone shops. Oh and for some reason coffee shops seem to be doing alright. There is lots of empty shops that are boarded up and have been empty for some while. Personally I feel it will get worse in the UK due to the following; 1. The cost of a referendum for Scotland 2. The current troubles in Northern Ireland 3. Uncertainty with the EU and whether the UK is in or out 4. Over population - and more eastern europeans arriving 5. Very little control of the natural resources I also think that the youth of today will inherit large debts when they are older mainly due to the rise in costs of student loans and course fees for colleges and Universities. Due to the lack of industry and apprenticeships the UK has become focussed on in if you don't go to University after school then you are a failure. And we won't go onto the weather debate...
  15. One of the other differences is that if you have a piece of spare land in your garden then you can grow far more fruit and vegetables in Oz compared to the UK.
  16. Lived in the Middle East for 6 years, so you are shot down in flames straight away. It is not just rain, we are Europes windiest country for a reason, hence the influx of wind farms all over the countryside now. People adapt to the climate through change. The statement you made about Scottish weather is so untrue. The lack of sunshine (now being linked through scientific research to the cause of high amount of Alzheimer's in Scotland), constant rain and wind and very little snow. Incase you forgot - umbrellas come to Scotland to die. Oh and I guess that most people in the UK spent this winter hibernating due to gale force winds and floods. As you have stated you only have a short window of poor weather (in your case too hot) however in Scotland we have a window that is 6 months of poor weather. Also if you want a climate change you need to move from Scotland, however in Australia you can move about and obtain a different climate but still be in the same country.
  17. So far from the truth mate, the snow doesn't stop anything just adds congestion to impatient drivers. How about when the sun rises at 9am sets at 3pm and doesn't really lift above the horizon, it is grey all over, freeing, blowing a gale and chucking it down for almost a week non-stop. You could go out and try to do out door things, but you'd probably catch pneumonia. We tend to hibernate in the winter months...
  18. What is the point of having an empty room for most of the year, just in case. I think it is rather derogatory when people comment on wanting a pool, lots of land and extra bedrooms. It is almost as if then feel Australia is a poorer country and they feel they can buy a huge house and pay less. Unfortunately the ar$e has fell out the UK and OZ is the land of opportunity at the moment. If we had a show that showed immigrants coming to the UK and they expected to land a top job, work less and buy a large house what do you think people would say?
  19. Well she stated when she got off the plane that they couldn't do that trip (flight) every year. So why when looking for houses is the extra room always required for visitors? Do they expect family to do the journey all the time. Sorry but as soon as I hear comments like this, then it says to me that they have not really considered the distance and how the ties with family and friends will not be the same.
  20. If you are young enough and have no commitments then I would just go with the flow. You might end up somewhere you never quite expected. Just be laid back and calm in the land down under and everything will work out.
  21. You say qualified, what qualifications do you have? Also what subject do you teach?

    Money

Where in Victoria? That's like saying I'm moving to the UK. Also how much money do you plan to bring over with you to help establish yourself. Do you have property to sell in the UK, property to rent or no commitments. A comparable salary checker would be to multiply your UK salary by 2.5, this should give you a rough idea of the region you should be aiming for. Mining will offer more money but you will probably be away most of the time on site, a wife with 2 kids may find this difficult.

    Medicals

The dilemma, have the baby in OZ or UK. In OZ then the baby already has citizenship just means we have to move sooner rather than later. In UK then we have to apply for a Child 101 visa, means we can take the time to move over (still have 4 years on our validated visas), however if there is always the chance that the medical section might not be passed. Support networks are same in both countries so no debate there. Am I missing anything? What types of things will fail a medical?
  24. Lift industry - So i've heard is always a bit of up and down. :xmas18:
