  1. Normally there are lots of advertisements, however, unfortunately the role suffers from low wages in OZ.
  2. Oh thanks, I thought there was minimum due to limits with medicals.
  3. What is the minimum age that you can get a visa for a newborn?
  4. Not totally sure but I think you will struggle to find any where for $500 for a week in Sydney.
  5. Brill thread. I have been posting comments based on this view for a while now. Like the thread says, I feel that Australia offers much more. It is still developing and will continue to do so. However not that the UK is a bad place in my opinion, but it has reached saturation. There is little by the way of natural resources and with a possible split in the union things will only get worse. Europe is faltering and that has a direct affect on the UK. I appreciate all the things that the UK offers, like being close to Europe and having a sense of history. But and a very big BUT, if I look back over the past 10 years I could count on my hand how many european city vacations I have been on. It the old chest nut of needing 4 bedrooms - incase family comes to visit. For me it is now about slowing down, choosing what I want to do and actually enjoying the ride, not keeping up with the Jone's and missing the adventure because it is running at 100mph.
  6. Wow, didn't think this thread would really take off. I remember seeing one of these so called relocation shows many moons back - and the family just sat and complained about the selection of TV on offer. They never tried once to integrate into the environment. It made me cringe. I always have a joke with the wife, in how many lobsters we will see at the airport when we go on holiday to Spain etc (however we just briefly pass through this as we prefer to do the spanish thing and believe in the saying 'when in rome') . You always get one with the white tank top on and tattoos storming about in a mid domestic whilst the whole family kitted out in new trainers and shell-suits trailing behind. I do know that there are a selective few on here who are notorious for posting anti-oz comments and threads, likewise I do appreciate the constructive feedback that others offer. It is just that there seems to be always at least one anti or negative headline in the home page every time I look. Maybe it is just the climate we live in, or the forum is now larger, or even maybe we are experiencing a cycle with more people returning back. I for one expect myself to be starting at the bottom, I don't expect utopia, I just want a new challenge and new experience in life. The 4 bedrooms (incase relatives visit) and pool are not for me. I expect different foods, routines and sense of humour. It will be hard but I am hoping it will make my book of life more enjoyable when I sit on deaths bed. I don't want Scotland or the UK, if I did I would stay where I am. The way migrants in the UK are perceived is the way I will be perceived in Australia. I have chosen to go to Australia, it is not Australia that has asked me to come.
  7. Ha ha ha, being an Engineer I would say the glass is 50% oversized....
  8. This site has changed over the last few months. There appears to be lots of post on criticising Oz and commenting on how the only thing better is the weather. Unfortunately some of these people are mislead by the various glammed up shows, wanted down under, relocation down under, home and away and neighbours. It is a different country, it has different cultures and lifestyles. Why move to the other side of the world thinking it is the same but with different weather. I have generally found Ozzies to be rough diamonds, a wee bit like the highlanders from the North of Scotland. They probably have the same qualities due to living in harsh environments. If it is sunny UK you are looking for, then go to mallorca/benidorm/salou and learn spanish and sit in one of those pubs that sell John Smith's with Sunday roasts. It would be a hell of a lot cheaper.
  9. I would not advise anyone of training just for the sake of migrating. Parameter and requirements change all the time for entry visa's. A job plays an important part in your life. The saying is if you enjoy your job then your week is 7 days long, however if you hate it then you only have a 2 day week. The best likelihood would be some form of health occupation; nurse, doctor or surgeon. These are always in demand. If he is under 30 then he should try back packing on a WHV, this would let him see if he likes the country first.

  11. Those figures are for Marine engineers union members onboard a class 1 supply ship. It all depends what type of vessel you work on.
  12. Chief engineer - $189913, 2nd engineer $162784 and 3rd engineer $146324 unionised wages so same for all. 4 weeks on 4 weeks off.

    Good book

Just finished this book, if you are into Stephen King or such like then this one is a cracker from what appears to be a new scottish author. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008AC1B4Y/ref=cm_cr_mts_prod_img Well worth the money, give it a try and let me know how you enjoy it.
  14. The inevitable is going to happen. There is a short fall in the NI pot, hence the reason why this has started in the UK. When I come to retire (if I am still here in the UK) then I will be means tested and will receive a reduced pension due to having my own from public sectors. This new superannuation is trying to bridge the gap so a minority of people will receive full state pensions in the future, mainly being those who have never really contributed to society and free wheeled their whole life. The question is though, why should I continue to pay into a government state pension pot when I will probably not receive the full benefits of it in future years?

    Pregnancy

Thanks AJ. Some reassuring points there. How did you find the process of moving over and fitting into a different health system? Also did you have to pay for the treatment?
  16. The compulsory scheme in OZ has been done right though. The percentage that the UK is imposing on employers contributing is nothing compared to OZ. Again the UK do things by half measures.

    Pregnancy

We both have permanent residency, but not yet moved over.

    Pregnancy

Has ever flew to Oz to give birth (during maternity leave) so that their child has automatic residency? (What are the conditions if you have never worked in OZ on this one) Or would it be less complicated to have the child in UK then apply for an additional visa?
  19. Would that be cut the official population by 2/3 or the actual population including refugees etc...
  20. Someone should ask, how much is this referendum going to cost and who is going to foot the bill? One advantage that the UK has over many other countries is that the armed forces serve the Queen not parliament.
  21. If you had $150,000 ( approx £100,000) how would you invest it, Australia or UK and in what?
  22. You have two options if wishing to pursue with your visa at present. 1. Have the baby in the UK then apply for a separate visa for the baby, same as you did for yourself. 2. Move over to Oz and have the baby there, it will then have Australian citizenship.
  23. It depends on what type of visa.
  24. Contact the AIMPE union they should be able to point you in the right direction. If he is on supply ships then the best state to be working out of is Western Australia. He will have to sit his ticket again via the AMSA, this is more to do with Australian regulations and not what he has been through before. The Australian industry has always been a bit of boom and bust with regards to positions at sea. Many of the shipping companies won't invest in the market due to this. They generally opt to sail foreign vessels from Singapore etc... He will have to pay tax in Oz due to the international tax laws, unfortunately not like the UK, so take this into consideration when looking at salaries.
  25. How can you predict what the future holds in the UK? Anything could happen, it is always best to stick with the big plans and the little ones will work themselves out.
