  1. I wouldn't like to be on the average wage in Australia ($72,800 last year based on a Google search) never mind the minimum and I don't mean that from a selfish showy off way. Cost of living in WA is expensive with so much stuff having to be brought in from "over East" and there's days where I look at my massive (by UK standards) mortgage and think I would have been debt free in about 5 years if we hadn't emigrated. Still, it was our choice to move and I don't regret it.
  2. "Nearly half of Australians alive today were either born overseas or have at least one parent who was, according to the last Census in 2011." Too lazy to go read the source story, Kate, but how do they define Australians? I filled in a census form but as am still just a PR until later this year (hopefully) then I am not a citizen so wondered whether that suggests the number of "foreigners" is even higher than the nearly half number or whether anyone legitimately in the country at the time is classed as Australian.
  3. Vegemite. 1) You won't know whether you like it or not if you don't try it. 2) Just because xxx does/doesn't like it doesn't mean it's wrong if you don't/do
  4. broad experience will never go wrong although obviously payroll will be quite different. CPA is probably the easier route as the requirements for CA can be quite challenging to fulfil outside of a practice based environment.
  5. I had a colleague whose wife worked as a carer/home nurse (or something along those lines) for a charity. She could salary sacrifice against their mortgage so part of their payments were effectively tax free. She was allowed to take her car home at night but could not use it for any private mileage though. There are other salary sacrifice methods for cars but the big catch may be (depends on the scheme) that if you change employer and they don't do something similar then you may have to pay to break the lease and lose the vehicle/have to buy it from the finance company. We also have a social worker friend who has some deal (I know that's not very helpful) with her credit card that she gets discount when we go out for meals. "Could" I think is the important word. Other than the tax allowance increase, the other perks depend on whether you use them or not. If you do get an offer and the role interests you, I would ask to speak to one of their senior HR/compensation people to get a better idea of what exactly is available, how it works and whether you would use the items available or not.
  6. Because some people want to move half way round the world and still have everything the same as it was back home. That's where the Aussie Fit in or F off mentality comes from unlike most of your popular European tourist destinations which will bend over backwards to be a "little Britain" rather than encourage visitors to embrace their culture and cuisine for the two weeks they are on holiday.
  7. Hi Zoe. Yep, I think you will struggle to find Australians who are familiar with AAT although there are a lot of people from the UK in Perth so it's not impossible that a prospective employer will know what it is. Your experience is probably more important though. What is it you do/have done at the refinery e.g. Purchase/sales ledger, management accounting, cash & banking etc?
  8. I think Crown are the sane company at both ends which is why we used them (plus previous domestic experience too) but no reason not to use someone else based on Kirsty's detailed explanation above.
  9. :embarrassed: Shouldn't have typed it in the first place but don't think many "normal" members would have seen it.
  10. The post said "generally" so as Kate says, we have the exceptions to the rule on here
  11. Yep, many (not all) Australians will take a row-t (as in argument, not row as in boat) get from a to b and almost all connect to the internet through a row-ter. Maybe too many crap US shows on TV.
  12. Interesting question. Why don't you do something really naughty just so you can satisfy your fellow PIO members' curiousity?
  13. Not a problem for me. Been in and out the US so often and had my fingerprints scanned (Malaysia too, but just my index fingers) I meant that the US have a liking for capturing information of any sort, just in case it could be useful but I'm sure most governments are up on this sort of thing.
  14. I guess it's in the records somewhere if you held a visa or applied for citizenship by descent (not sure what your story is) I can almost guarantee it's on a US database though!
  15. OP is asking about Non-British ones. think there was a similar post recently as the form changed this year. i don't know the answer though. Think it was something to do with people who are not allowed to have dual nationalities/passports having to surrender their other citizenship in order to hold a UK passport.

    Fifo?

Think that's typical for Barrow given its location.
  17. Nope, defrost them in the microwave then straight into the fryer. Sometimes they even batter them first... who says the Scottish diet is unhealthy?
  18. Don't think you will find an unlimited plan here. Things to consider are where you will be and are you going to be moving around a lot, particularly in more remote locations. If so, Telstra has the best coverage but you will pay a premium for it. Vodafone is good in metro areas and you can use your included credit to call internationally. Also consider getting any handsets unlocked before you come over as it will be far cheaper, based on experience. Other option to look at is a dongle if data is your main requirement - lots of options out there. Have a look at whistle out.com.au for comparing what the different operators have in terms of plans. Haven't used this site but found it in a google search.

    Fifo?

Tell him to have some healthy meals and watch the portion control. FIFO is great for piling on the kgs if he's not careful and doesn't make use of the recreational facilities (and I don't mean the pubs!)
  20. The market for accountants is becoming tighter and will become even more so once all the big LNG projects come online in the next couple of years. The mining companies are in a similar position with not much new major works planned and are off-shoring jobs to cheaper locations too. It would not surprise me if accountants do come off the list (or the numbers are slashed) in the not too distant future as a result of the above.
  21. That was the suggestion. Didn't realise you needed detailed instructions  Ripped our evap out out and put reverse cycle in a couple of months after moving in. The heating gets used in the winter more than we use the cooling now - blood has definitely thinned out. At least it was cooler last night.
  22. Get a couple of those spray bottles for using on plants and fill them with icy water.
  23. You can get the new one now and they will transfer the balance of up to 12 months to your new one i.e. It will be a 10 and a bit year passport. alternatively, if you wait it only took a couple of weeks to get a new one for our daughter. It would be cheaper to renew before you go though and also avoids the issue of finding someone here to certify your photo (or maybe that's only for kids' passports if I remember rightly)

    Pomsinoz Survey

It's more a case of the low user base of iOS that protects apple users i.e. these people will go after the masses using Windows than the "niche market" Apple users when creating malware 80:20 rule.
