Hi, considering bringing a 2013 VW SHARAN 2ltr 140bhp. Automatic diesel with aircon. UK value £23000, can't do Oz value as they don't sell it there. It will e 12 months old by the time we move in aug 14 and will have 15000 miles on, probably intend to keep for long term interested in your advice please?

We received your quote request on the website and will do some calculations and let you know what we find out shortly.

Hi Michelle,

I think that the costs needed to import this vehicle including getting it ready for road use will be more than it might be worth to sell here in Australia, unless you have space available in your container of household goods to save a little on shipping costs. If you wanted to know for sure then please fill out the form on our website with all of the details of the car so we can calculate the costs for you:

Hi Johnny,

I assume you made a mistake with the year model and that this is actually a 2004 model not 1994. Based on that I would suggest that this would be an excellent car to bring with you, almost certainly in our category A!

Hi Kokora,

I am not sure that I am looking at the same models as you because I can see a number of models with 3.0L engine however there are no 3 series BMW's in estate models in Australia for this year model. Based on the information provided I would think it's most likely worthwhile bringing this car with you however I would want to check the details and do a proper calculation before giving and solid advice either way, so please fill out the cost estimate request form on our website:

Thanks Craig - I have filled in the full quotation request form form on your website.

I have a question which perhaps you or someone else reading this thread may be able to answer.

If an official Australian car is worth (say for example) $30.000, how much less in terms of percentage would an imported model be worth?

Richard,

Hi Richard,

The market value of imported cars is typically expected to be less than Australian delivered models for a number of reasons however with a car of this age it could be worth more depending on the car, how you present it for sale, etc although it will really be a case of looking at each car on a case by case basis because there are many variables and very few things that would actually increase the value of your car. If I had to take a guess based on the information you have provided so far, assuming the car is in good condition and comparable to others for sale in Australia, then I would expect it to be worth maybe 10% less to an average buyer. If you try to sell it to a dealer then they will use any excuse in the book to screw you on price and most likely offer less than half of the Australian market value which is not far off what they would offer anyone even for an Australian model.

The golden rules are not to be in a rush to sell the car as the Australian used car market is slow so expect it to take anything from 1-4 months to sell, make sure you present the car well with all service records and any other paperwork available, make sure it's in excellent condition so there is no need for anyone to beat you down on price, and don't get disheartened when you get stupid low offers from dreamers or opportunists because that will happen with any car that is for sale.

My husband has a FIAT 500 ABARTH. Cost around £13,000 in the UK for a 2-3 year old still so they are quite expensive. I'm worried these cars are too new, so it would cost a bomb to keep. The only possibility it won't is the fact it is the same as a Fiat 500 - just a better one:biggrin:

It is a 2009

Air con

70,000 miles

$35,000 (redbook.com.au didn't have many to compare to. Think they were NEW prices)

Looking forward to your reply!

There are no 2009's on the redbook site but if you look here:

You will see the second hand prices for a 2011 model with average of only 35,000K Vs your 110,000km. So it would seem yours would be worth far less that this.... :

Thanks guys

I'll double check the mileage to be sure.

Sarah

Sarah - I really don't think that milage will be the issue here. Even if the milage was 10,000 miles (rather than 110,000) 09's were never sold in Australia. According to red book the 11's are $22K, if you assume you could even get the same price as the 11 model, given its an import it will be worth less (10-20%). So lets say you could get $22K (Lets just say a miracle happened, your car only has 10,000 miles and you get $22K) you have to compare it to what you would get in the UK, around £13K, which on the current exchange rate is around $22K. Therefore when you factor in the costs of shipping, compliance, etc you would lose money and if it does have 110,000 miles you would get significantly less.

Shipping cars like '04 M3's where they are worth £8K in the UK Vs $40K in Australia makes far more financial sense, so that at least you can break even. It sounds to me like your car would be better off with staying in the UK. Then take the $22k you sold it for, add say $6K for the import costs and buy an Australian version when you get there. Something like this perhaps, 2012 model with only 9,000KM :

http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Abarth-500-2012/AGC-AD-13910586/?Cr=2&sdmvc=1

At the end of the day its completely your decision but financially it does not seem to make sense.

Oh my word. How very helpful you have been.

Thanks for the info and the links.

So appreciated. I would sell the car, but hubby wants to keep it as he has spent time getting it just how he wants it and runs beautifully.

It may mean he either comes to terms with parting from it or we spend/waste money on bringing it!!

Thanks again

Looking at choices of which car to import. You gave me some detail around my wifes car, but also interested in bringing my car over.

I currently have a company car that when I leave my company have the option to buy - BMW 320d. I read on one of your links that you can bring a car over that you have not owned for 12 months but need to get prior permission. Is this something you are able to organise, or would I need to do this prior to organising?

Hi Anthony,

You must have owned and used the car for a full 12 months. For anyone else reading this please do not ever expect to get approval if you do not meet this first basic requirement under the Personal Import Scheme. There are VERY rare cases where they might grant approval if you are very close to the 12 months and had an extremely compelling reason for unexpectedly needing to move to Australia before you were able to meet the required 12 months. Please note that financial or employment reasons will not be acceptable for this special consideration, it would have to be something serious like a family member being seriously injured in a accident and urgently needed you as a full time carer.

With that said there are sometimes other ways depending on your unique circumstances, and in this case if you have had this as a company car for your exclusive use (not part of a rotating motor pool, etc) for long enough that it would be at least 12 months before you move to Australia, and you can get something to that effect in writing from your employer, then we may be able to put together the application for Vehicle Import Approval accordingly.

As this sort of thing can be a little tricky I would strongly suggest that you contact me directly to discuss it in more detail before making any decisions.

Without knowing the year model I can't give a truly accurate cost estimate but I can tell you based on the details provided that this car should certainly be worth bringing with you.

Hi

Looking at taking my VE SS Ute back to the uk late this year or early next year are you able to do this ?

We sure can help with sending cars back to the UK also but as with bringing cars to Australia there are a lot of variables so we need to know more about your situation. I would suggest that you email me directly with information including if you are moving a container of household goods, if so could the car fit in there or would you ship it on it's own, where you are moving from in Australia and to where in the UK, etc.

There was a slight model change in 2011 so it could be an early or late 2011 model, however either way it should still work out fairly well to bring it with you.

Hi Iron Chef,

We own a couple of cars and trying to decide whether to bring or upgrade as we won't be heading for a year, so we shouldn't have any issues with length of ownership.

So car details are as follows:

Audi A4, 1.9 TDI, SE, 2004, 110,000 miles, 6 speed, AC. Irish value about €5,500

Toyota Avensis, 1.9TDI, 2005, 100,000 miles, AC, has isofix ( its a requirement right?)Irish value about €2,500

Toyota Avensis, 2.0 D4D, 2010, 70,000 miles, AC, isofix, high spec. Irish value about €14,000

i know you give advice on whether its worth bringing a particular car but have yet to see a full breakdown of cost from shipping to import tax etc. do you know where I can find an example breakdown?

thanks for your help x

The actual costs involved in importing will be different for every person and every individual car due to everyones different circumstances, locations, exchange rate, shipping cost, vehicle values, etc so you really need to get a cost breakdown for your exact vehicles. We are happy to do some calculations and give you a little more information about the process and a breakdown of estimated costs for you specifically. All you need to do is fill out the cost estimate request form on our website for each vehicle:

http://www.ironladyimports.com/cost-estimate

Make sure you include any information which might help, for example if you were thinking about shipping a car in the same container as your household goods, when you purchased the car and when you are making the move to Australia.
