VERYSTORMY
You mean like the station owners at Palmer River who took it too far http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-10-31/couple-accused-of-murdering-missing-gold-prospector/4343318 Not quite what I was thinking of. More the fact that if you remove anything. Even just a rock, off a mining lease, it can have serious criminal consequences. The presence of a mining lease doesn't mean there is a mine there. So, don't just assume you can wander into the bush and start picking things up. Even an exploration lease can have some consequences. At the very least, you can find yourself being kicked off the ground. Most exploration companies are pretty good about it and I have sat at a camp fire many a time with fossikers / amateur prospectors. But, they told us what they were doing in advance. Also, be aware that many sites where crystals are visible, particularly caves, are sites of aboriginal heritage and any damage caused is a serious criminal offense that can carry prison terms. G'day mate, not many gem areas but lotsa gold fossicking and no mining/fossicking permit needed. http://www.treasureenterprises.com/gold%20prospecting%20information/gold_prospecting_locations_South_Australia.htm Cheers, Bobj. Bobj
Cool, thanks very much. One day I plan to head out to coober pedy too, hopefully we could find some scraps there? Plenty of old spoil heaps to noodle around. But be aware of trespassing on claims. Cheers, Bobj.
Bobj
Just thought of a fabulous place for some of the more uncommon minerals, the Olary/Bimbowrie Region, for chiastolite, andalusite (maltese crosses) and kyanite crystals. http://www.mindat.org/locentry-3519.html http://brokenhillmineralclub.wikispaces.com/file/view/news+v12n1.pdf Cheers, Bobj. Forgot that I went there 40 odd years ago.
Guest The Pom Queen
Old thread I know and not really on topic but ... I am really proud of my 12yr old. He is addicted to fossicking, minerals, rocks, fossils and gems and a few months back we signed him up to the Cairns Gem and Mineral Club, well during that time he has made gem trees, bracelets and he is currently doing a cabochon course, they give him 3 slabs of stone and he shapes and polishes it using various saws and other machines. Well last night he finished his first one and he can't stop smiling and showing it off. The thing is he won't use any of his own as he also likes them in their rough form but I'm hoping this camping trip he will find a good specimen that he won't mind cabbing for a lovely piece of jewellery for me. Here is a photo of his work, it started off as a slab like the one on the left
Bobj
Excellent work, Katie, he has done well. Cheers, Bobj.
Guest The Pom Queen
Rather than start a new thread I thought I would post on here. The young one had me buying him a tumbler he arranged to buy through a member, he told me, mum its only $20, so I coughed up and then he throws at me, mum I need 3 types of grit and polish, so the bargain of $20 ended up costing me over $100 this is on top of the $200 I spent on Saturday buying him a few specimens and a small display case. Bobj I thought this was a cheap hobby  on the plus side he was given a small piece of amber free (well I'm presuming its the real stuff)
NowPerth
Tell him he can pay it back when he sells his first opal/sapphire/diamond! Or turn it into a ring for you.

Guest The Pom Queen
Have to say my opal given to me by a very very dear friend is my favorite, although i took it to the club last night to see if they would set it in gold for me (most of them are jewellery makers) and they wouldn't touch it, they said it's too precious and to go to a specialist shop. I want it set in gold though as I don't think silver would do it justice. I saw a lovely idea but they told me last night it would be no good for an opal so I am back to the drawing board,
