such a beautiful city, I have a web server hosted in Houston, and I love it!

may I ask you, what is your motive to leave? (if it is ok to tell :)

Houston is in fact a great city in many ways, and is my favorite city in the US. Unlike most people here, I moved here because I wanted to--not because I job moved me here.

That being said, I've always known that if the time ever came for me to move from Houston it would have to be out of the US. Well, that time is here, lol. I'm essentially capped out in my profession in Houston for the long term. Planning is already a tough road to hoe in the this part of the country and logjams along the way have basically no room for advancement professionally or otherwise.

In many ways, especially in my field, Melbourne (and Australia in general) is one of the few areas in the English-speaking world that is still in the "upgrading ourselves into what we want to be" phase and I want to be part of that (hokey-sounding, I know). I spent a week there with some friends who have gone from outsiders to near industry insiders (in less than 3 years) and while the place isn't perfect (nowhere is), it left a great impression on me.

Without being too verbose, that's a reason for me to make the move.

I've been living in the middle of the desert for the past 8 years..

I have 8 fishing rods

I'm reserving one rod for you, for when we continue this story, while fishing Melbourne :)

I can understand why they have done the IELTS for everyone - just a bit annoying.

If I can get 8's on the IELTS then I can get 80 points under the new points score (my production date is as you guessed!) which should hopefully be enough to convince them. It's a pity they don't give points for multiple degrees!

Cheers for the book recommendation! I can take the test just up the road from where I work, which is handy.

it is as they say :)

plus you have a university degree (even better: two)

and if your nickname implies that your production date is 1983, then you will have an abundance of points for a 175 on the new system.

now this part is tricky, nobody call me racist! :

although Australia celebrates diversity, still it is an English speaking nation, and this language is considered a unifying element, when it comes to immigrants: the better your English is, the more "welcomed" you are

it sounds mad that you will have to sit an "English" exam, but there is a reason for this:

there are many people who hold the British nationality (or American, Canadian, Irish..) but their English language skills are poor: take this example: some Arab dude (or German, Asian, African, etc...) marries a woman who holds the British citizenship, soon he also becomes a UK citizen, later on this guy decides to immigrate down under, his English skills will not help "unifying" the nation, he will not "integrate" that well

you, on the other hand, are "more likely" to fit right in, and integrate seamlessly.

the Australian government has two ways to distinguish you from that dude:

1-The Racist method: White-British applicants get 20 points

2-non Racist method: IELTS 8-8-8-8 applicants get 20 points

the second method does the trick, and it is politically correct (and the British Council makes more money ;) )

if you look at the statistics, you will find that the UK is -by far- the largest source of immigrants to Australia.

do as the captain advised

I recommend this book: Ace the IELTS

a change in your circumstances will be something like having a new child, so, as long as you "behave ;) " , you will be fine

Hey WaW,

it's a shame having to wait that long just to be rejected. Did you apply for any other states in the meantime? What is your occupation? I could not find you on our first page ...

Thanks

Uli

I received an email from CO requiring further documents. Medicals,PCC and IELTS are in the Request List.

However, I'm comfused by another attachment " Instrusction for Employment Reference". Since Employment Reference is not in the Request List, do I need to resubmit it or send more envidence of employment?

Thanks

it seems you've been having fun last Feb !

a good knowledgeable Migration Agent can give a definitive answer to how will this change in your circumstances affect your SS

what I know is:

1- having baby IS a change in the circumstances

2- VIC do say in the SS grant email:

Validity of Victorian Government sponsorship

1. Sponsorship is valid for four months from the date of this email. Sponsorship is only valid where there is no change to your circumstances or the information provided by you to the Victorian Government, and is conditional upon you and your dependants fulfilling all DIAC requirements.

I am not sure, but I remember in the SS application they ask if you are pregnant, if I am not mistaken...

I think what VIC means is, if your circumstances do change, they preserve the right to "revisit" your SS..

can anyone who's been in this situation shed some more light please?

Hi Uli... I would love to know the outcome for our VIC application... just out of interest... but I think it is only fair for us to withdraw as I dont want us to take a space from someone else who wants it!!!

agent is wrong: in fact you still can have your medicals done, even before the baby is born

DIAC advices against it, since it includes an x-Ray, however DIAC says if you insist, you should consult with the doctor to arrange for a Lead-shield to protect the baby.

and they STRONGLY advice against the x-Ray during the first 3 months of pregnancy.

my best wishes.

Does anyone know what else is involved in the medical? do they dig into your medical history or is it based on your current health?

Any info much appreciated.

They're diggin' deep mate. Really, they want to know your whole medical history, take blood-samples, pee-pee, check your eyes / ears / limbs / reflexes / spine, check for scars and so on. The full lot.

Look for forms 26EH and 160EH. It shows you details about what the doctor is going to ask you.

Cheers

Thanks, Uli. It's as I suspected. I will definately take a look at the forms... googling it as we speak!

There is also a PDF that you can download which provides guidelines for the doctors on what they should look for and what DIAC considered dodgy.

Makes interesting reading.

But lots of medical problems do get through - al lot depends on the amount it would cost Oz re its seriousness.

If you have any problems take a letter from your specialist at the time saying all is now well - then that can be attached.
