Reality has hit home - So stressed

Well I guess the reality of us moving back to Canada has hit home.

We only have a short window of opportunity, so I have booked the flights and we fly back on the 2nd of December.

My emotions are all over the map at the moment, in a way I will miss Australia, and in another way I won't.

One minute I am happy to be going back to Canada, back to my family and friends, and at the next minute I am crying my eyes out. I guess I am grieving if that is possible.

I never slagged Australia, never really hated it, but not 100% settled, used to cry my eyes out at xmas and birthdays, as had no one around.

Just in the midst of trying to sell everything, and that is stressing me out, although I have sold about 5 things in less than a day... so that is good.

Sorry if this post seems a bit of a ramble... just all over the map at the moment. Just need a hug !!

I am hoping that once I touch down on Canadian soil, my emotions will get better.

Cheers

I think it's normal, although you know what you are returning to it is still almost like the fear of the unknown. Anyone who says they won't miss anything about the country they are leaving is quite frankly lying.

I know I will miss loads of things when we move but I will also be aware of why we moved.

Just enjoy the time you have here.

Hi Karen, we too are moving back home on 18th January but i cant wait and am so excited to see friends and family. We have been here 3 months but Melbourne aint for us and prefer home. How are you managing to live in a house and sell everything at same time? i just put a thread up for selling or shipping my furniture home but i would sell but would maybe need some items like beds lol hope everything runs smoothly for you and all the best for returning home xx

Hi Gillian,

It is easy for us to sell everything, as we are in a furnished rental, plus the landlord is a friend, so no lease, just gave my 2 weeks notice last night... she was lovely about it.

Yea once I finish work, and everything is sorted then maybe I will get a bit more excited about going back... everyone back in Canada is so supportive.

It also helps that I have a job to go back to when we land... my old job I left 2 years ago, so it is almost like a 2 year vacation.

I have missed my family and friends... they are all so excited about us coming back, and the look on my twins faces was priceless... the are chomping at the bit about going back home.

Good luck with your journey back... the time will fly by

Cheers

Gillian, you have gone to all the trouble and hard work getting to Oz and after only 3 months Melbourne isnt for you, why not try another state while you are still here , the uk isnt going to be any different from how you left it ,yes it will be great to see family and friends but then you fall back into your old routine and you must have come here to get away from the place ..........good luck ........

Hi Tonyman, i know all this, it was our dream even though we had never been to Oz before. Giving it longer wont make us feel any different, its just not for us here, its hard to pin point what it exactly is but we prefer home. Its really hard making friends and being with each other 24/7. The weather here isn't what we expected either and i know its better than Scotland but i was expecting it to be much better here. We can't move state as were on a state sponsored visa so have to live in Vic for 2 years. I feel all there is here is sight seeing and when its nice, having or going to BBQs, after a while it'll get boring. Id rather be in cold Scotland with friends and family and have endless pubs and nightlife where as here there nothing unless you go in the city. Our kids are teenagers and theres nothing for them here, theyre bored here. Had a social life back home, so did we.

Hi Gillian,

I think moving with teenagers here is bloody hard work... mine were just turning 15 when we came... and the one has hated Australia since day 1, and told me flat out that she would return to Canada when she was 18.

Having no friends is hard as well.... I know when we hit rock bottom... it was bloody lonely.

We even were thinking about moving from Perth to say Brisbane, until OH lost his job, as my girls are bored here in Perth... if you are bored in Melbourne, I can say that you might be bored in other states, however, you can always try another state.. QLD will be warmer for you, and you are not tied to Vic if on a 176 it is only an obligation, no legal requirement for you to stay.

However, the cost of moving states is not cheap, plus you have to get employment, so at the end of the day you have to do what is right for you and your family, and until someone walks a mile in your shoes, they can't give you advice.

Just my 2 cents worth lol

Cheers

This is why I always urge people to come here first for an extended visit, it may be expensive but it saves money long term. Reality rarely lives up to a dream if you have never experienced it first hand.

I know from our own perspective going to a different State wouldn't make the slightest difference and it sounds as though you are the same. Going back for me recently and for my wife earlier in the year just reinforced what we already knew, that for us the UK would be a better place. I emphasise for US, not everyone and you sound the same.

Good luck with everything.

Good luck in your ventures back to Perth. We live in Berwick just now, have been here almost 2 years, but lived in Perth (Scotland) for 8 years, thats where both my girls were born. I miss scotland quite a bit but we are here now and will be for some time to come. I have 2 girls aged 13 & 10 who are both fairly settled, but if I told them they were moving back to Scotland tomorrow, they would both jump at the chance. We are now building our own house which is very stressful, never again, not like the house builds back home when they can't get them up quick enough!!!! One day the builders are on site the next day they aren't for no reason, very frustrating:arghh: Pity we never managed to meet and have a coffee would have been nice to meet up wth someone from the motherland and have some sort of connection.

Anyway I hope your move goes smoothly, and in a funny way, I quite envy you that you have taken the plunge and decided to move back, just isn't on the cards for us. You would think I hate Oz, I don't, I really like it, but I liked back home as well.

Good luck to you and your family

Fiona

We are in Gardiner street here and in jeanfield road when in Perth. My girls went to oakbank primary for a few years before we moved to Aberdeen. Not sure where bruce crescent is? I have just turned 41 so perhaps we may know the same people, Perth isn't that big.

What school do your kids go to here? I've got a year 7 at berwick secondary college and a grade 4 at berwick primary. Think they are settled but they do have good days and bad. Today was a bad day for my year 7, we have had tears :( tonight.

Going through the same ourselves at the moment. House still not sold, caravan still not sold. Had a successful garage sale though. Have just found out as well that when we get back to the UK in order to rent we will have to pay 6 months rent up front, because we have been out of the country. My emotions are all over the place too, as we dont hate Australia we have had a wonderful 6 and a half yeras here. 2 of which we spent traversing the country but just homesick, and that is the only reason.

Hi,Fiona yeah i know Jeanfield Road, Bruce Crescent is over the road from the entrance of Perth College on top of Crieff Road. I went to Goodlyburn Primary then The Academy at Viewlands Road. My daughter is in year 8 at Kambraya College and my 18 year old left school few years ago.

It really is a small world isn't it. I know Crieff Road, one of the busiest through Perth, the other being Jeanfield Road. My eldest has a friend that goes to Perth Acaedmy, quite a few also go to Perth High School.

I suppose its been easier for my kids to settle as they were younger when we moved, although they do miss back home, more than I thought they would. My 13 year old's friends here all seem to fall out all the time and she hates that. Everyone back home seemed to get on better. I'm hoping it will get better over time, but who knows.

Have you found it easy to make friends over here? I have met a very small number of people who are all really nice but I don't have much of a social life, just always seems to be the 4 of us together 24/7. I am now working part-time which is good. Everyone I work with are really nice but all have their own lives so not much socialising going on there either. Anyway thats my wee moan. On a brighter note, the weather is look up!!! Can't moan about that just now.

Surname is Duthie and we stayed in Perth from 1996 to 2004 when we moved back up to Aberdeen thinking that was going to be our last moved. How wrong I was! So are your flights booked to go back home and removal company done! Must cost you a fortune with flights and stuff. Do you havea house and job to go back to? Can't believe the number of people returning home but when you know oz is not for you all you're prob thinking about getting on that flight back home.
