You see, for most working class in the UK we've been screwed. Now I'm not looking for a big debate in this. The fact remains if I was Still residing in the UK I would have lost every thing . To me it was adout survival,(it took us over 2 years to get here so we had an idea it was comming) now money does'nt buy you happiness but it does give you choices. Lukeskywalker sounds like a bright chap and lets say he is right about his economy speach.....for me there is no question where I'd rarther be. (even without his speach, you have to be blind to not see what is going on) Just for the record I do miss home alot, but I also remember more strongly why I left. Once again no one said it would be easy, in fact it is bloody hard but to most, you have come this far!. Good luck to you all eitherway. I met up with a mate at Kenilworth in April - it is one of my favourite castles although I dont like what they have done with the knot garden I'm afraid. My friend lives in Stourbridge and would you believe she had never been there! I know she has been to Stratford because we had a day there together the last time I was over! Her favourite is Witley Court and I went there last time too - that was impressive. However the best thing in that area was going to see Shakespeare performed at Ludlow Castle - have you tried that? Absolutely brilliant! I'm getting nostalgic just thinking of it all! Quoll, just driving around Worcs, warks, herefordshire with work keeps me happy. I get off the motorway, and go the back roads.........great. I tell how understated the poms are ..........Did you know where Tolkien got his inspiration for " lord of the rings"?( LOOK IT UP ON GOOGLE ) In all the areas ,especially "moseley bog "in moseley birmingham,whilst living there, in wake green rd. I know the exact house where he lived........and how many signs or pointers are there?, none ,zero,zilch...........imagine if that was the U.S or OZ ! ps i was at kenilworth castle for the St Georges day celebrations. Actually for new comers it is now 4 years to get a passport so that is quite a huge chunk out of anyone's life especially if they have kids who may be heading for high school. I moved from Melbourne to Queensland 4 years ago, but our adult kids are stiil there.It takes a long time to get used to a new home if everthing else is not in order.I have never been to the UK, but my mum is from there and I think she would have preferred to have not come here.. She has never liked thes summer heat and the dry cold of winter. He was sentenced to 24 yrs yesterday , waste of time - death penalty - the coward stabbed her 9 times ( if similar injuries had been inflicted by a dog, it would be put down) 4/ deport all those that shouldnt be here ( use the army to disrupt the movements of all those that shouldnt be here , and ship them out ) 5/ if you dont work you dont get ,and that includes " white trash" ,having children to get a house. Mebourne is getting greedy. There are speed and red light cameras everywhere and if you are doing 64kmh in a 60 kmh zone expect a $120.00 fine. Speedometers are in 5kmh intervals for gods sake.. Stamp duty payable on a $400,000 home in Melbourne is $20,000. same house (will be a better house for $400,000 here) Stamp duty $7,500 Melbourne is as cold as England in the winter and as hot and dry as the Sahara in summer. SEQ has 21-25 deg most days in winter and around 30 in summer with a bit of humidity... Melbourne has a lot more mixed races (which can be a good thing for dining etc). If you like fishing and boating you must pay for an annual boat licence (if you have a boat),and a launching fee at most ramps of about $10.00 and a fishing licence to fish in Port phillip bay or any freash or salt water area of water including the ocean. If we wasn't so far away, we live in Mindarie, north of Joondalup, I suggest meeting up. I love it her and enjoy my job but my OH has had the same feelings. Everyone says it takes at least a year to settle in, longer if you are in a bad area. We love NOR as it is that bit warmer and we are right near the coast, walkin distance in fact. Being part of the sunshine coast, it has lots of employment opportunities for tradesmen and retail type jobs. It has the Pumicestone passage, the Pacific ocean, and is just heaven. I never wore a long sleeve shirt whilst living there (or long pants) as it is ALWAYS warm and sunny. Lived there for a few years, but the drive to my specialist job in Brissy (100km ) was jst too much. There are quite a few poms there.. They will be the ones who are out swimming at Kings beach in June and saying.. "This water aint cold.. I had to hold the tears back reading your blog. Things are REALLY hard the first couple of years. Try to put things into perspective and make a list of why you left things at home in the first place to come here. Was it to make a better life? If so, why? People come here for different reasons so we all have different advice to give each other which, although is meant well, can confuse us even more.
