Hi guys! Haven't been on in awhile!! Great to hear all the plans are falling into place. Hey Hazel, did you sell your house? I never managed a sale and it's still not rented yet either! Lot of pressure now that we're here in Oz without our funds!!!! Can't say I love it - I'd be lying. We're in the ACT - the city and surrounds are nice, but too much stress going on at the moment to be able to enjoy any of it. We hate where we live - too sterile and nothing to do during the day for me and the small guy, but our eldest son has started school, which is good for him at least.

Hi Karlom and cuba267,

Thanks for your above posts, all points to be taken into consideration!! I think you are very right that the interest rates will go up before this country recovers, as I dont see us recovering the 500,000 jobs that have been lost, so recovery will be a number of years.

I think I need to get an up to date valuation of the house and how much it would rent for in present climate. My BIL got a 3 year interest only mortgage. I am exploring this route but it depends on the equity we have in the house. That way, I could overpay for the next year and have a surplus built up. My hubbie built the house himself and did alot of the work so we were in a good position equity wise, but now need to get current figures!! Also house in not in a town (easier to rent) but a few miles outside, more of a luxury detached house, so harder to rent I would imagine.

We are only starting the visa process so we have time on our side.

We would prefer to sell, and have a deposit for a house in Perth. Also noting prices in Perth have gone down (but they were too high anyway!!) so that gives us a bit of flexibility.

Lots of factors to consider!!! Thanks for the heads up guys.

Cheers

Caz ...... only at skills assessment point yet!

To all people migrating to WA WELCOME, I'm an Aussie and would like to offer you a bit of advice and hope that you find it useful.

STAMP DUTY in this state is the biggest income to state coffers after mining royalties,

As an example lets say that you intend to spend $500000 on a house/land the stamp duty would be approx $25000, if you bought a block of land say $200000 and the stamp duty $6000 you are $19000 ahead, as there is no stamp duty on the house you are about to build.

Next become an OWNER BUILDER this requires a license from the MBA ( Master Builders Assn ) costs approx $150 and takes a week.

You are now a builder grab the phone and start getting quotes, a minimum of 4 for each stage and don't need to accept the cheapest, as a rule I generally look for the most genuine ie grano, plumber, brickie, chippie, roofer, plasterer, paint it yourself and move in.

In the last thirty years i've renovated/extended 10 homes in Perth this way, the last being my current home on which I added a 50sqm.

The cheapest quote was $58000 I had it to lockup for $25000 in 8 weeks and to a far better quality to boot.

I'ts a lot of fun so if you want to save big bucks and don't mind getting your hands dirty go for it.

By the way there is still a few blocks available, like about 99.9% of the country, so we should be able to fit you all in at a pinch.

Once again WELCOME and best of luck with the "PUBLIC SERVANTS" and your visa woes.

Cheers,

Pete

PS Meant to add if you intend to buy a new car buy it in brisbane as the STAMP DUTY you save will pay your airfare to get there and driving it back to Perth will be a nice holiday.

hi all

we've been in melbourne now since the 5th November. came over with no job or house to live in and since we've been here my wife has got a job and we (finally) got a rental. Everyone seems positive here about the state of the economy and the direction they're all going in. So far i can honestly say that it was definately worth taking a punt coming out here.

Especially so since i see that ireland is under 3 ft of water.

Hey Cuba,

Glad to hear your getting settled, we arrived in Perth on Tuesday 17th and have just started to get settled, we bought 2 cars picking them up today and kids started school today and they seemed to be ok Son in Year 1 and Daughter in Kindy for 2 days a week. We are staying with family in Tapping so the school is in Wanneroo not too far at all. Trying to get looking at rentals now but hubbie still waiting on work, he has a day trial on wednesday so hopefully that will go well and we can get the ball rolling and get our own place.

Keep us updated with your news!

Hi folks,

I'm from Dublin and I'm due to start work in Melbourne in Feb. The company I'm going to be working with have put me in touch with some law firm that specialise in immigration and they are dealing with my application. It's for a 457 visa and the forms I filled out said a medical shouldn't be required unless I had any existing medical issues. It seems like everyone else has had to do a medical from what I can gather on here. I should have an update from the lawyers in a couple of days and they've sorted a couple of other Irish people I know out without any issues so fingers crossed!

I'm moving out on my own(seems like I'm in the minority on that front!) and don't know anyone out there, bar a distant cousin, but I'm really looking forward to the move. It looks like Melbourne will be a great place to live and work. I'll be working in the CBD so I'll probably live somewhere relatively central.

Hi All,

Greetings from Perth we arrived on November 17th and hubbie found work almost immeadetly he is a Chef work is grand but very long hours I know its the industry but for the hours he is putting in 70+ he takes home about 850 a week, thank god we get the family assistance which works out at 660 inc rent assistance every 2 weeks for 3 kids so that really helps I am looking at going back to work in admin so hopefully we will be better off then, its not that you could not manage on that money shopping costs us about 200 per week and rent is 200 but we came with no furniture so every spare bob is being used to buy that! Word to the wise be aware you will have to be here at least 3 months working before you will get credit cards or credit which we did not know and were kind of hoping we would get but anyway we will get there eventually!! Other than that we are loving Perth kids are really happy in school its amazing they do so much with them i worried at first my little boy might fall behind or get bored but they really work at the childs level every class has an assistant up to year 2/3 so that makes a huge difference and my son was at home in a class of 35 here its only 25 so he really came on leaps and bounds in only a few short weeks. Seems to be pleanty of work here though interest rates are going up on Mortgages so economy is on the up, I have a good circle of friends and none of them are not working electritcions, plumbers, painters all trades really so its looking good for new arrivals!! Any questions dont hesitate to ask, Has Cuba been on lately how is he getting on does anyone know?

hey all (hi hazel)

all well and good with us here in melbourne. been here now nearly 3 months and it all seems to be working out really well. my wife had no difficulty getting a job (it felt like we had to look the word up in a dictionary). without a doubt there is a positive attitude over here that has been absent in ireland for a long time. the economy does seem to be going against the grain and doing well.

but its not about the economy (although a job helps). we have found the vast majority of australians friendly and helpful. they also seem to be genuinely chuffed that people are coming over here taking a chance in their country. we've had such good experiences with australians here - the people have really made the move worthwhile.

anyone needing advice or help on the move to oz (or, specifically, the move to melbourne) please drop a me a line. i'll put a message up every once and a while to keep this link live coz there must be a lot of people back home looking to come over.

and take a chance! its worth it!

Hi Hazel & Cuba

Great posts and thanks for keeping the rest of us up to date and being so positive! We just sent our container away of Friday and booked our flights last week also - fly to Perth on 22nd March. Its all getting very final now and we're really excited albeit hate the thoughts of saying goodbye to family and friends - wish I could zoom past that bit. We have 3 boys 10, 12 and 14 so hoping to get them into a good school before the beginning of the second term. Delighted to hear that there seems to be plenty of work out there, OH is a carpenter/builder and we have no work lined up as yet so we'll be in at the deep end straight away. Good luck to you and hope it just gets better and better for you!
