Moving to Australia - am I eligible?

Hi, I am considering moving to Australia from the UK and am finding it difficult to get the information I need regarding my eligibility. I am hoping to move with my boyfriend who I don’t think will have a problem as he works in IT and has family there. I work as an Executive Assistant for a big 4 accounting firm and have done so for 2 years having worked in the same sector for a year before this. I have read forums and found cases of people in this sector having moved there but am now worried as I am aware there have been changes to immigration since then. I am just wondering whether there is anyone out there who is aware of someone having moved there recently with a similar occupation.

Also, are there constant changes being made to the skilled occupation lists and if so, how often are the changes made?

I appreciate any help you can give me regarding this. I am hoping to move to Brisbane if that makes a difference.

I would just like to add - I only have GCSEs so does that make it impossible to move there?

Quite possibly. Does your boyfriend have a degree in IT? Him having family there will have little or no bearing

Unless of course the having family there was under circumstances that mean he is a PR or citizen - in which case it would make significant differences

He doesn't need a degree. I work in IT, never went to college and don't have a degree. I started working straight out of school at 16. I am a visa holder and will be moving to Australia next week.

Original poster - what area of IT does your boyfriend work in?

True but you would assume the OP would have stated my boyfriend has PR/Citizenship so he’s ok but how can it work for me.  The fact she put “I don't think he would have a problem because ......” would suggest he does not have PR, she just thinks as he works in IT and has family he’s likely to be ok.

Didn’t say he definitely needed one but if he had one then that would be a good starter

When you say "boyfriend" do you mean a traditional boyfriend/girlfriend, or are you actually de facto partners living together?

Thirty years ago I was an Executive Assistant.  Even then, it would've been impossible for me to get a visa to migrate to Australia in my own right.  So things haven't changed that much.

To apply for a visa, you must have an occupation that's on one of the Skilled lists, AND you must have the qualifications and experience specified.  If you don't fulfil all those criteria, then you can't get a visa. The harsh truth is that the vast majority of people can't get a visa.

The good news is that if you are living with your boyfriend and can prove that you're in a long-term relationship, he can include you as his partner in his application.  That's how I got to Australia - my husband (now ex) was a teacher.  There are criteria that you must meet and you need to look into those.

Thank you all for getting back to me. We would have lived together for over a year by the time we were thinking of applying. I read somewhere that this is the minimum requirement to be considered a partner - does that sound about right?

Also to answer the questions re his job - he would come under Computer Network and Systems Engineer on the skills list. He does not have a degree but did his A-levels and has worked in the same sort of job for the last 7 years.

I gained a positive skills assessment under that occupation. However I switched to 263112 (Network Administrator) as it was easier to get in under this occupation. The point requirement for South Australia state sponsorship was lower. In addition to this less people applied under this occupation. When you get the visa the job he actually works wouldn't matter.

A Levels might not get him a skills assessment. I gained a Cisco CCNP in order to get a positive skills assessment. If he is a network engineer he might already have one - if not he might have a CCNA and this is half way to getting a CCNP.

I can recommend an agent who specialises in IT applications if you like? He got my visa granted in January and it sounds like myself and your partner are in similar occupations.

There are always exceptions but my advice to anyone reading this thread and considering emigrating  to Australia (to live & work permanently) is that these two (2) things really are the building blocks to a potentially successful visa application :

1.  Being YOUNG (20’s preferably)

2. Having a DEGREE

If you have those two things and a massive desire to emigrate to Australia, I reckon you can make it work a lot of the time....

The good news for you then is that it doesn't matter whether your job is eligible, as long as your boyfriend's job qualifies. You go on his application as his de facto partner.
