Small city to start in Australia. Which?

Hello people, thinking about where to live for a limited time (1 year max) I have arrived a conclusion. Go to a big city has pros but also cons. Basically I do not like the idea of living in a city where the room I can afford be 15 km from CBD.

So I am looking for a small cities (100.000-500.000 people) where I can find my opportunity (any work that is not a waiter :D). Can you give me a few options? I read about Toowoomba, Plainland... any more?

These are the other <500.000 cities:

  • Newcastle
  • Wollongong
  • Sunshine Coast
  • Geelong
  • Launceston
  • Albury-Wodonga

Thank you very much :)

I grew up in Geelong, my feeling is it's a fairly depressing place to be quite honest. It's stinking hot in the summer and miserable in the winter. On that list my choice would be the Sunshine Coast.

I would not class Launceston as a city, it's  lovely  countryside and a popular place for walkers. I suspect tourism is the main industry so you may end up waiting ?

The City of Launceston! It is very much the northern city of Tasmania! albeit with a population of approx 90,000... The home of Boags beer!http://economy.id.com.au/launceston/number-of-businesses-by-industry/ The  West and East Tamar are famous for the wineries. There is a lot more to Launceston then tourism!

I like the area a lot but it felt more like a country town to me than a city. Depends what the OP wants with Wollongong you have the option of going to Sydney for a day if you want big city facilities. Likewise Geelong is near Melbourne. Plus you can get easily get there by public transport. Newcastle is also reasonably  accessible to Sydney albeit a longer trip.

What type of work are you looking for ?

Do you have any qualifications ?

Newcastle is really on the up at the moment and rents are not too bad

Thanks to all of you for your answers. I can gather and update my information with them :)

Rallyman, I would like to work in construction. Yes I do, I am civil engineer but my english level from 0 to 120 is 50. I suppose I will have to start doing some unskilled works until I reach a better english. Anyway I have 3 years experience, not too much not too little.

Thank you again :)

PD: I am going to look into Newcastle :)

Good luck mate! Construction here in Launceston is once again becoming very vibrant ! Hopefully you will find your niche and quickly!

Happy to read this :)

I am staying in this forum to read more topics and ask more questions. My idea to flight to Australia was on late November but now I am reconsidering it because I have read in other topic that during summer period Australian students are in holidays and a lot of jobs go to them (which I find normal and perfect by the way).

Might be of interest for you. Below is taken from CommSec's latest 'State of the States' report and gives an idea about the level of construction in each state at the moment.

I have lived in Geelong for the last 5 years and it is certainly not depressing now, best move we ever made (from Melbourne).  Seems to be plenty of construction going on as well.

I would have thought South East Melbourne around Cranbourne would still be quite busy when it comes to construction. You mentioned Toowoomba and Plainland, Plainland is small probably considered a village to a lot of members. There is however a lot of building taking place there at the moment and for the next few years, same for Toowoomba.

'As @akiralx as said it's quite a few years since we were in Geelong but even then we noticed how much it had changed for the better. So it would also be worth considering

Thanks for the information, it will help me a lot. Looking at graphic, what I have read about Perth and the decrease of the jobs was right.

Could be a good choice too, and 1h from Melbourne.

Thanks for your answer. I do not know why, but I think I like Toowoomba more than others because of how it sounds xD

I like Toowoomba it's beautiful, it is a long way to the ocean if you like to be near the beach. It has some beautiful gardens to compensate. At the bottom of the range you can buy a brand new house with an acre of land for $379,000. If you lived in Gatton you would be in the middle of Ipswich and Toowoomba so would keep your working options open.

Roger that!

I know distances in Australia are too big, but let's suppose I live in Toowoomba. Do you think I can be self-sufficient with a bicycle (assuming I find a job in the center)?

@Surbello it is hard to say. Toowoomba is very spread out and we find new areas every time we visit. In fact I was up there today. I suppose it depends where you live up there. To be honest it's not like living and working in Melbourne City where everything is compact and you could get around easier on a bike. I think for a place like Toowoomba a motorbike or small car would be the way forward

You wouldnt pedal from Gatton to say ,Ipswich, you would need a motorbike or car really.

Hey @calNgary someone was cycling up the range today, it's surprising how far some do pedal
