Wooba
We're on the way to the football game and got off at Blacktown station. I asked a police officer about walking to the stadium and he was pretty clear that we should not walk around the area, just take a bus. I was quite surprised. I didn't think Sydney had areas that bad. Is it quite dangerous?

JockinTas
Blacktown is a suburb 34 km from the city centre. I think I went there once in the many years I lived in Sydney. I don't think it's particularly dangerous but I wouldn't like to live there all the same.
srh82
Blacktown is a low socio-economic area and it has a reputation to match.
Quoll
I would take the bus, yes. Sydney has some very dangerous areas!
movingback
I disagree. I bought a car there a few years ago and take the train out twice - once to view, and once to pick up. Walked about a mile from the station. Its fine. Suburban. Aside from having to cross a few busy roads I didn't feel anymore unsafe than anywhere else I've walked in Sydney. I walked around it too and didn't feel unsafe but I still wouldn't want to live there. Bankstown is also pretty rough also Punchbowl but I never felt unsafe there either. BlackMagic
Yah it's bit risky..... But which suburb is a heaven ( Except New Castle Legal Disclaimer:As per police Statistics and I dont live here Lol ) We can say Blacktown is more susceptible to crime occurrence but cant put a permanent stamp on it. (My opinion ) http://crimetool.bocsar.nsw.gov.au/bocsar/ Have a look at this map and compare for different types crime rates. Sydney CBD is also not a paradise ;-)
Joebloggs
I haven't much call to go to Blacktown that often, but in the last 10 years have been there probably 40 times both during the day and at night. Although there is a good reason why it's called Blacktown and there is plenty of shady characters most that are definitely a darker shade than most, I have never felt threatened or uneasy. I been to the Kmart around midnight as its a 24hr one and I been to the cinemas and Westfield at night, walking around the town centre during the day and it's like a mix of specialist nationality and pawn shops. Its similar to Bankstown, Lakemba, Liverpool, Hurstville.

JockinTas
No worse than some parts of the uk No worse than any city in any part of the world - they all have their dodgy areas.
Wooba
It was an interesting experience. We went to the 7 eleven just outside the station and it felt like the twilight zone. There was a woman (with her kids looking very bored) singing Christian music enthusiastically at the top of her lungs and no shortage of shady characters around. Even if I hadn't been told by the cop I would know this is not a great area. That said, the neighborhood the bus drove through on the way to the stadium looked perfectly lovely. I wouldn't have suspected anything had we not walked outside the station.
Brit In Oz
I've got a mate that was working out there not too long ago ... he didnt have great things to say about it LOL. But seriously ... he didnt have any troubles (working during the day), but yeah, did say there were some dodgy areas at night. I think you'd be ok there, just need to keep your eyes and ears open ... just all the normal stuff you'd already do in some of the dodgier places back home. flag of convenience
Only been there a couple of times but like the suburb. A great ethnic mix reminds me of some parts of London at a pinch. Great mix of ethnic shops. The largest population born in The Philippines by far living in Australia. Train station at night? No idea. But can show you some stations here in quiet little Perth that are dodgy at night. Seen at first hand.
