Our move back to UkK 8 years on

Our move home went well.

We migrated to Perth in 2000, and we left in 2008 and headed back to UK.

We haven't regretted the move back home one bit.

It took us 8 years in Perth to realise that we had actually left a better life behind us in the UK.

Once the novelty of the nice beaches, Fremantle and Kings Park etc wore off after a year or so, it just became a grind which was not very different to a grind anywhere else.

WA was very kind to us though because property was very cheap when we first arrived and we bought our home in Perth which shot way up in value during the time we owned it which in turn has enabled us to buy the UK house we live in now.

I could never give up the life I have now to go back to live that slow dull suburban life again.

For us the move home was everything we hoped for and much more.

Curious as to why you are posting in a PomsinOz forum now then.... surely if you have moved on from your experience in Oz you'd not have joined up to post this? Unless you still have a few hankerings for your life here.....???

Interesting point that. If you moved back all that time ago, what made you think about finding an Aus migration forum to write on now?

Living, working, eating and sleeping can be a "grind" regardless of where you live. Living in Australia isn't like some fairy story where everything is just magical and all your wishes come true. Of course living somewhere new is going to be a novelty at first, but if what you really need is familiarity, then moving to the other side of the world probably isn't a good idea.

At least the extra 7 years it took you to move back, meant that Australia was of benefit to you financially.

I would imagine because he's posted in the MBTTUK forum which is always good information for those who might be considering it. This post is quite as relevant as any other. Looks to me like the OP was once a member but, as old members often do, they forget who they were, passwords etc!

Good to hear it's worked out for you OP!

Quite possible, thousands of old inactive accounts (which hadn't been accessed for several years) were removed from the forum several months ago.

It also depends where you live as well. Many times I wished I had a slow, dull life in Sydney ............... life was very hectic with work, running the house/family, socialising and going away every second weekend to friends' place in the country to help with her rescue animals. I do lead a much slower pace of life here now and I revel in it.

Good to hear Johngdownunder has settled back into life in the UK though.

I could ask the same question as to why you are so called "settled" in Australia yet are on a thread which applies to those considering a move back to UK ?

To answer your question, I posted only to hopefully show others that just maybe moving home can work out for them too.

As regards hankerings, yes- our superb Welsh & Geordie neighbours we had each side of us and all the things we did together is what we miss most.

You do make a very good point.

I'm more curious as to why as a brand new poster who hasn't been in Aus for 8 years, you would call yourself 'johng down under'?

Would 'johng firmly back in the UK for nearly a decade' suit better? :wideeyed::laugh::wink:

Hey Johngdownunder

I loved your post and appreciate you coming on the site to share your experience!

I moved to Perth in 2010 and never really settled. 6 years on and I have finally made the decision to move back to Bonnie Scotland and can not wait!!

Its so good to hear when people are in the same situation and have made the decision and not regretted it.

Good luck for your future.

I don't go to specific areas of the forum, just Get New Posts - half the time I don't even look at which sub forum they are in.

Glad it's worked out for you, everyone's circumstances are different. Probably more importantly than how much they like Australia is their quality of life in the UK, I don't think I've ever met anyone in the 'never looked back' category who talks about their life in the UK with any fondness, other than missing friends and family. Likewise I've never met anyone who has only positives to say about life in the UK but that Australia is even better.

We returned to Bonnie Scotland too, so I know what you mean McFly.

The thing which made it easy for us to get out in the end was that the values of the inner Perth properties had shot way up and the houses round our way were selling off fast, so we made a quick run for it. The strong dollar and the quiet property market at the time in Scotland was certainly another big bonus.

I am sure the move home will work out good for you by the sounds of it.

You may even find yourselves better off financially here too or at least in that your money may go further, I am not sure what costs are like there now but it was becoming really expensive just before we left.
