Byron Bay report with pics

Not much to say other than love the place....................all those happy backpackers with buskers on every street corner. Like Noosa, the restaurants need to lift their game.............small menus of around 4 or 5 choices and not a "normal" green salad to be had anywhere...........the salads were all drenched in some oil or other or topped with melted fetta or some other unhealthy, over salted dressing..............one even with peanut butter? Also, they don't advertise it, but most are BYO if you ask them, with corkage at 2 to 3 bucks per person so heaps can be saved there, and you get the wine you want from the bottle shop, not just those on the wine list. Fast food is good and cheap.....has to be for the backpackers I guess and we saw one burger bar next to the Vietnames restaurant we dined at (which was excellent) with over 30 folk in the queue and had to admit, those burgers looked amazing at 7 bucks with chips.

Unlike Qld, we saw only a couple of barbie points at one beach point and devoid anywhere else which I guess, keeps the place tidy..................backpackers generally aren't the best at cleaning up their mess IME. The biggest downside for others I guess would be the parking fees at the beaches at 4 bucks an hour with limitations of 4 hrs on some, which rules out really long stays there and/or extra long walks. Imagine having to obtain and hump 24bucks in gold coins if you wanted a 6 hr stay!!!!!!!!We walk everywhere so it wasn't a problem for us being as we were, 10 minutes walk from town centre/main beach which gives access to a longer walk and the other beaches. $ days wasn't enough for us even though we've seen all there is to see, it's one of the few places that I'd love to see and experience again

The Hang gliders over cape Byron in the last pics were amazing................they were up there for hours

Such good pics Johndoe, and it looks like a fantastic place! Was it nice where you stayed? The accomo?

Yes. Strangely enough it was all we could get at short notice and was only a B & B but the room was lovely and the hosts ( East European girls probably on WHV) ever so polite and helpful. http://www.expedia.com.au/Byron-Bay-Hotels-Ruskin-House.h3575973.Hotel-Information?chkin=18%2F09%2F2014&chkout=21%2F09%2F2014&rm1=a2&hwrqCacheKey=89912141-e651-4c70-815e-6d6d51018a9eHWRQ1409047023518&c=3ae581ea-47de-4a16-a740-428167fbd859&

Omg. .I love byron! ! Been a few times as a backpacker, family holidays, in motor home with family when living in Oz last. I had the most amazing time about 15 years ago..finding some crazy night club dancing in my bra. .narrowly missed a free head massage with breakfast. . Watching dolphins swimming by.. We stayed in an amazing rental on the beach side (next to some land owned by crocodile Dundee man).. However went back over a year ago and it had changed.. More commercialised. .more posh shops trying to be trendy. . Shame it's changed but still fab! ! The house we stayed in was all fenced off and not in use. Happy days tho! Happy memories!

I like Byron. Think it can be hit and miss though....

I like Byron too...but it's not quite as idyllic as you might think.

On the weekend nights the town centre is actually pretty grim and there's a really nasty undercurrent to it. From memory of news stories Byron has the highest assault rate in NSW after the Sydney hot spots like the Cross.

Friends of mine who live in the area have generally moved away from the town to either the hinterland or coastal towns up the coast. They won't go to Byron on a weekend night.

Always a good time in Byron even if the wackier backpackers can be a bit annoying! Seen The Inbetweeners 2? The brewery we visit for food and drink at night is part of the backpackers complex featured in that film :) but we stay at the Lord Byron resort which is a bit more civilised!

Reminds me we were just talking about going for a Twixmas break in Byron, maybe with some pals. Must look into that!
