garyupnorth
We opened an account in the UK with ANZ in London. All we had to do once we arrived in Oz, was to collect our cards and activate the account. Just go on line or give them a ring piece of p155 really. jjgibbs
Nab AnZ ING HSBC can all do it. I just rocked up to AnZ the day after I landed and opened a bank account with my passport. They may ask for a small deposit to open it with.

jasepom
Yeah westpac worked for us. Not sure which bank I'd go for now prob ANZ. Maybe do a bit of research see which one perhaps has best rates if you end up buying.
kevin jc
From what I have found there are plenty of banks that offer the service but I would not transfer money from a uk account direct to Oz bank, NAB even told me you get a better rate going through an exchange firm like moneycorp or global finance, There are plenty out there but as I am doing keep your options open and keep in touch with a few to see who offers the best rate on the day of transfer. NAB said they could not tell me the rate I would get from them on a transfer until I had done it, any other opinions welcome on the subject! jasepom
We used HiFx they offer a no fee service with competitive rates way better than the banks. Also the once the account is setup you can perform the transaction over the phone from Oz. They give you spot rates so you can pick your timing. Thanks mate.

BrownEyedGal
Firstly any Oz bank that offers no fees so NAB, Citibank, Commonwealth Saver only and HSBC..then change or add more when you are ready..Many of the big banks in big towns open on Saturdays..Just have to get online and do banking that way. Also look for ones that offer good deals such as no annual fees on credit cards e.g HSBC or Jetstar for a while I think. HiFX or Ozforex for money transfers as they are usually a lot cheaper. Don't forget you need an active mobile phone for internet banking so you put in the pin nos etc. I feel better with a couple of different accounts open..I use one specifically for Ebay and one for big purchases only and I don't have to worry about paying fees or having a certain of amount of money paid into the account each month. I must admit though I really like NAB. BEGal
Alan Collett
Howzabout the bank that supports this website with their generous sponsorship ...? Best regards.
wolvesaussie
Na they are poor, not openning on a Saturday morning or past 4pm in Geelong city centre, the second biggest city in Victoria is a bit of a joke.. shame on you NAB
Alan Collett
Who goes to a bank on a Saturday these days?! In fact who goes into a branch at all? Not a factor for me in deciding who to bank with - tho' I acknowledge it might be an issue for some. Best regards.
Parley
Very little need to go into a branch these days. Unless you're a technophobe.
wolvesaussie
Have u ever walked into a branch. They are packed so something must be going on . Ironically we were told we had to go onto the branch as the account that was set up in uk had some restrictions re online banking that u had to go in to sort out
jasepom
Yeah you have to visit a branch to activate your accounts, like any bank they need to verify your identity before allowing you access.
BrownEyedGal
Yes you need to activate in person as Jasepom has said. However you don't have to wait in line, just see someone at enquiry desk and don't go at a lunch time. Also you need to get used to the fact that banking is very different here to the UK and work with it. It will change, but slowly hence I do internet banking frequently. jjgibbs
I hardly go to the bank at all. Everything done on the old smart phone. From paying the electric and rent to checking what I really have in my bank account instead of a guesstimate that I would have to pay for if I couldnt find my own banks atm.
