tingtongman
So I went out last night to a house party, two ozzie lads who looked like trouble join, I dont really say anything but just be friendly. We leave to go to the pub our group about 30mters ahead of the two ozzie lads, next thing I know one of them starts shouting. I look back and I dont know what he is saying, his accent is too strong. 10 seconds later he takes off his shirt (while still 30 meters away) and starts shouting at me. "Come at me brah, come get some brah, this is my town brah" I am shocked, I have no idea what is going on and just look at him. I look behind me, thinking maybe he is talking to someone else as I have not said anything, nope nobody behind. I dont say nothing and just look at him. He puts on his t-shirt and walks away. lol

LukeM
Some people have too much free time on their hands, and he probably had been drinking! Interesting thread. I guess casual work is easier to come by because there's no ties - they can just hire and fire you whenever they feel they want or need to! Regarding your wasps post earlier I'd say that it is no more or less common in Australia to be bitten or stung by wasps than it is anywhere else in the world. I got unlucky recently. Some had decided to call our mail box outside home. I put my hand in there. There was some in among the mail. So I paid the price for fondling them unexpectedly. :embarrassed:

Paul1Perth
glad everyone is enjoying this thread, I dont update this thread too much with gut wrenching info but feel free to ask me anything and ill do my best to answer back although my knowledge is limited somewhat. I do also try to put a post a week up on my blog with some info. I have been having problems lately with gloves, they all keep on ripping, I cant bring myself to pay $20 for a pair as I think they will feel the same ill fate as rest. Problem is that when using my scissors, they sometimes cut into the gloves, resulting in them being ripped. I bought these gloves and did a DIY job hopefully they do the trick. Try the riggers leather gloves from bunnings or similar. I've found them to be a lot more sturdy and comfortable. I only do a bit of gardening and work around the house though, not picking onions all day. Hope the weathers improved. I was over in Surfers Paradise weekend before last and the weather was terrible. I was working in Oakey and staying in Toowoomba in the week but didn't fancy a weekend in Toowoomba, not that much to do there. As it turned out all I did in surfers was go to the shops as the weather was so bad. I've not been shopping for ages and there were very good sales on everywhere, like half price in a lot of places. That's me kitted out for the next year.
tingtongman
Hi Paul, we had the exact same weather as you did, im not that far from the GC and yeah the weather was bad , thanks for the tip for the gloves ill check them out. So we finally got some work after the weather got good, got paid an hourly to do some weeding, its so easy, I went as slow as I could and just soaked up the amazing views. One of the best looking farms I have visited This was a cabbage paddy, this is the left over cabbages , an huge amount of waste goes on at these farms, its because the supermarkets wont buy them unless they are in 100% perfect condtion. I went to a beet root farm, were over 80% of the beet roots were left, as they were either too big or too small. Paul1Perth
When you see waste like that and the number of people who are struggling to get a bite to eat it makes you realise we have something wrong with the whole system!!
tingtongman
Your right Paul, I dont know much about this industry but their is a huge amount of waste. I would assume the reasons the supermarkets wont take it is because the consumer (us) won't like the look of it. I told my friend the idea of them teaching children in school at younger ages that its okay if the furit is not in perfect condtion, or has a leaf/stem missing. or a tiny bruse The farmer would make more money, there would be more furit for everyone to eat, less wastage and cheaper prices. but pffft what the hell do I know hey! shakergaz
Yeah I've just started work near Melbourne pickings berries and the amount of waste is ridiculous. I understand not packing the berries that are over ripe and could ruin the rest of the punnet, but throwing them away because they're slightly too small or don't have the 'right' shape is such a waste. I try and eat as many of those that will be thrown out as possible to minimise the waste!
tingtongman
haha Gaz, I wish eating beetroots and onions were as tasty as cheers lol. Just a heads up although the infomation I have heard is pass on from 2nd hand conversations, but apprently there is a huge amount of backpackers in Stanthorpe and not enough work going. Roomers of a 400 person "waiting list" for jobs is there. My room mate told me that his friend is there currently staying in a renting accomdation who told him that will be working 5x a week if he lives there. He has yet to receive no work and keeps getting told he will start next week. Once again this is just 2nd hand talk from the backpackers/immigrants here near me but worrying if true. tingtongman
Okay so I have been here for just over a month now and I have documented all my daily spending onto a spreadsheet below. [ A full explanation and breakdown of costs is written in my blog post but ill quickly explain what is going on. My total budget for the month is $505, of that my rent has been $360, I spent 0 on going out or partying, I figure id save that until im in Sydney or somewhere better? Since work has dried up a bit the last week due to weather and some crops are not ready to pick, I had to taper my spending a bit. I think im going to set $500 a month as a target for the next 2 months I am here, then when I leave to the cities, ill re adjust. I should point out that my first 3 months of Oz I see purely for the purpose of saving up as much money as I can, while at the same time obtaining my 2nd year visa. What a great update, can I please ask what your food breakdown is ie what meals did you have, did you live on pot noodles? I see you have purchased a few pairs of gloves, headlamp etc dont forget to keep your receipts and claim this back on your tax at the end of the year
Paul1Perth
Are you not bored out of your mind on your days off work? Whenever I had days off I went straight to the bottle-o and bought a crate of cold ones! Was that in Townsville? I'm sure getting smashed on the booze would have really cured your boredom....not. You would have been better off joining one of the sailing clubs and learning to sail, paddle, nip off to Maggie Island and have a few drinks with the locals and watch the free band in the pub, go to one of the many pubs in Townsville and drink there and socialise. Saw one of the best wet T shirt comps in Townsville. They have a great brewery too.

I see you have purchased a few pairs of gloves, headlamp etc dont forget to keep your receipts and claim this back on your tax at the end of the year oops the receipts are int he bin now, how about if I buy dress shoes for furture work or bus passes, will they count? I dont eat pot noodle, I hate that kind of food, just because it has little nurtrional value (taste nice though). I shop smart always seeing what is on sale and getting that. My standard meals would be something like this: Morning: Oats with coco powder and peanut butter + eggs / Weetabix + toast Lunch (if working): Cheese sandwich + peanut butter sandwich Lunch (not working): Pasta with tuna or sardines/Beef mince Dinner: Sweet potato with Tuna/sardines/chicken/eggs Snacks thoughout the day would just be bread or furit or veg. That is a typical diet for me at the moment, I think its very healthy and has all the carbs/fats/protien I need. I make the pasta sources myself with onions/peppers/tomatoes/carrots so I do get enough veg in my diet I think. I got a bit lucky yesterday also. Guest Guest16631
......it looks very nice...... ......if you used the ones your picking ,the butternut...........you can add a sweet potatoe to darken the colour and add a little depth of flavour......! ..........pumpkin scones are quite nice too....! You need: 1 Tblsp butter 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg 1 cup mashed pumpkin (cold) 2 cups Self raising flour Method: Beat together butter, sugar and salt with electric mixer. ..... ( I mix it by hand and there ok...) Add egg, then pumpkin and stir in the flour. Turn on to floured board and cut. Place in tray on top shelf of very hot oven 225-250c for 15-20 minutes. Paul1Perth
Whack a bit of bacon in your pumpkin soup mate. I find straight pumpkin a bit bland. Makes all the difference.
