I wish to loose some weight before leaving for Australia. Does any one know a quick one so I could loose some pounds say within one week. Please I need to know if there is any kind of weight policy in Australia as recently implemented in the UK?

I'm 51,and manage to stay slim by (1)Keeping junk food at the absolute minimum, and if I do have something junky, think of it as a treat.(2)Eating nourishing healthy natural food,in otherwards minimise the processed stuff, and (3)Do a fair bit of exercise.I go for power walks, usually 3 per week (30 mins each one)and OH and I go for fairly long hikes on weekends cross country.

If there was a way to lose weight so quickly and keep it off it would be a miracle cure and you would see adverts on the TV, doctors proscribing the treatment and obesity and associated illnesses like diabetes would be history in 6 months. There is no way you can realistically lose more than 1-2 kilos a week.

Only sensible eating, good portion size and lots of exercise will help you lose the weight and keep it off.

What do you mean by a "weight policy" anyway? Do you mean that overweight people are somehow banned in Australia or banned from flying? If you have a few extra pounds then you will be fine and don't need to worry but if you are very fat you won't lose any significant weight in a week.

I hate to state the bleeding obvious but there is no magic pill or miracle cure and if you are looking for one and "have no time" to manage your diet and exercise then you are a fool. If you want to be healthy and lose weight you make time and "having no time" is just an excuse to do nothing. Sorry if this sounds harsh but if you are emigrating or just going to Oz for a visit, you will have more important things to sort out than spending hours at the gym in your last week which probably won't make any difference in such a short time.

Wishing is always a good option. Alternatively I find crossing my fingers sometimes helps. Or I just shut my eyes and hope really hard.

But I've always got the best results from eating less and exercising more.

PS Apologies that seems harsh but any magical solutions, pills, crash diets, whatever are just a waste of your hard earned money and lining you up for disappointment. It's basic maths, less calories in + more calories out, committed to over a reasonable amount of time = long term weight loss

Why don't you do a detox for a week to give yourself a kick start? Or just consume soups, shakes and replacement meal bars. Not a long term option but there is no harm in it for a week.

You say leaving for Australia so presumably you already have your visa? In which case no they are not gong to turn you around at the airport because somebody thinks you are carrying too much weight.

Cut down on carbs and sugar, worked for me, no junk, plenty of protein and small portions of veg. I ate berries also and nut as other fruit have natural sugar.

but like others have said no quick you shouldn't loose weight to quickly as it will go back on just as quick

Be proud of who you are and don't sweat the weight, as far as I know there is no discrimination here for weight, apart from ignorant people who think they are so wonderful and have long noses.

You will not be alone in the weight department, lots and lots of big people here in Aus just like America.

However that is not to say you should not try to lose some but I do know how hard that can be, especially if an emotional eater. Its more than just cutting down food we have to get the head right and depending on what is going on in our lives its sometimes very difficult. I am at my heaviest I have ever been and I know why because of the emotional problems I have had this year, however its a new year and hopefully things may settle for a while and I an lose some.

I do know that I head for the food when I am upset though.

As long as you go on a calorie controlled sensible diet after, and stick to it. Replace 2 meals a day with diet protein shake (not slim fast because protein shakes will make you feel full) a good one is Sci-MX diet shake. Then have a chicken breast with some boiled cabbage as a meal. Drink plenty of water at least 2-3 litres a day. This will cut out most carbs. Now the horrible part, you must also do at least 30 mins cardio everyday. Do this for a couple of weeks and the weight will drop off. (at least 1 stone) If you want a helping hand look up Dexaprine (it's very strong and not for everyone). But remember, this kind of crash weight loss MUST be followed by a sensible diet and plenty of exercise or you'll be back to square 1, and then some in no time.

The Atkins diet (my own variation) dropped a full 8 kilos off me in a week. I ate nothing but meat, eggs and fish...............not one carb other than that which was in ketchup and I drank a minimum of 6 pints of water a day. It's no fun and I wouldn't recommend it as a long term solution but for someone wanting to get into that old suit or special dress for a wedding, it works.............fast...............and you aren't hungry.

There is the cambridge diet where you can loose quite alot in the first week, but hard going and not for everyone, quite expensive too. I would stick to good breakfast, avoid carbs and fizzy drinks, drink plenty of water and eat high protein foods, veg, salads and fruit and of course exercise, even if it is a 20 minute fast walk, surely you have time for that

If you want to lose weight quickly then you could try a liquid diet for a few days, but it is certainly not long term option and not healthy if used that way.The best idea is to cut down on sugar and unhealthy fats and start taking a few walks at least three times a week - it all helps.

Don't keep weighing yourself either ( it can make people give up), you will know if you lose weight by how loose your clothes are getting.

Dukan diet is a good one if you want quick results but once you have done the first part you need to keep on doing the second part to get long term weight loss. Its also not that nice as all fats are cut out and its meat and eggs and only some meats,no pork, no lamb. Lots of water, no milk, black tea and good old oat bran a tablespoon a day. However it works and very quickly.

The problem with doing all of these diets is our body starts to yo yo and even though we cut down our food the damage is done and our metabolism is changed, its very very complex. I was referred to a specialist doc and she told me how complicated it is. Its not just cutting down food for a lot of people, we have to trick the body metabolism at the same time. The doc uses Optifast and puts people on it for two weeks at a time, just replacing two meals a day and then have a normal meal at night, steak, salad etc. This way the body does not go into attack mode and shut down the metabolism.

You see, I have tried them all and for some of us its just very very hard, and I should have eaten all the information and books instead of food.

As a fitness professional there is no healthy way to loose a lot of weight in a week. There are some really good suggestions from everyone, eat healthy meals, limit sugar, fatty foods and balance protein, veg and carbs into your diet. Working out will increase your metabolism which will in turn speed up the rate at which food is broken down and digested, not to mention the health benefits associated with exercise!

if you don't watch what you eat and have no time to workout then unfortunately you will not achieve your goals!

Write out what you wnt to achieve by the date and dicipline youself to reap the rewards

You can do it!

p.s. drink plenty of water, green tea and coffee.

Thanks guys, I'm really grateful for your advice. I think the next thing for me to do right now is to get an indoor gym equipment, gut my intakes, and wait for the miracles:biggrin: Cause I really need to look good while in Australia.

I'd forget investing in gym equipment and just start taking some brisk walks and building up. A 30 minute walk each day, with some inclines and so on to walk up and trying to keep a decent pace should be a good starting point. Don't throw money at gym equipment as chances are it'll be a flash in the pan and the effort required will put you off. I'd check out a gym first and just pay for a session or two and see how you go.

As for crash diet, whatever you do, if its only for a week it isn't going to be fat loss, nor is it going to remain gone. It'll be your body losing water and so on. The actual fat loss won't occur in those early days.

What others have said, calorie intake to calories you use up, make sure your intake is the lower number and you'll slowly start shifting it, along with some decent cardio exercise like walking, jogging, swimming or cycling. Cut out snacks, having too many carbs, change to wholemeal over white for rice, pasta, bread and so on. No sugar and have things like fish or grilled turkey steaks and lots of veggies, that sort of thing.

If you need support and a programme as such, I suggest something like Weightwatchers in the long term. You'll have regular weigh ins, will be trying to lose weight with others and have a decent menu to choose from. And exercise. Much of it can be free if you make some room in your day to walk places. School run, to the shops, post the letters and all that.

Best advice Snifter! I have tried many diets in my time, they work short term. I now exercise and cut down on the carbs and the weight comes off. I kick started my weight loss by using a milk based fruit drink twice a day. Only did it for a week but the weight started to drop off therefore it gave me motivation to carry on. Fad diets don't work long term.
