  1. Hi all, our adult daughter, who suffers various arthritis issues, anxiety and depression is not doing well back in the UK. she has a son,11, who has ADHD and mild autism, a daughter, 4, who also has traits of ADHD. she is looking at coming here for a year, possibly just a tourist visa, for us to assist with the children and help her health but we have no idea what would happen regarding g schooling, we know we would be required to look after their health matters, ie meds etc ut need some direction on the other info.
  2. Hi we have a son 31 and a daughter 26 who live back in the UK, both have now been classed as disabled due to Chronic Arthritis among other ailments and both are finding it difficult and have asked if they could come and live with us. Our daughter also has 2 children one with Autism and CD AD but is unmarried. Having looked at the child visa information it seems pretty straight forward but I wanted to know if anyone else has done this for elder children under the disability class and what, if any, benefits or funds they would receive if they came here. Thanks in advance
  3. We have been here for almost 4 years now and I am still suffering home sickness and depression, my husband has settled in really well has a god job we live in a beautiful house we have far more than we would have in the UK, except we have no family here and no friends. I have just given up work due to health issues and wanted time to recuperate and I just feel lonelier than ever. I have struggled with my emotions about staying or going for a long time but lately it is at the forefront. My husband is understanding and suggests I go home for a few months at a time, but then I think what's the point in that I will have to come back and be as lonely again and what kind of marriage would that end up. At present I have no reasons for staying here, yet my husband has everything.....has anyone else been in this situation and if so what did you do about it?
  4. We have a box full of summer clothes we would like to send back to grandchildren in the UK but wonder if it still has to be under the £36 tax threshold or will they be duty free as no tax paid on children's clothes. Thanks in advance
  5. My son is looking at coming to visit after XMAS on a tourist visa, but it's only for 3 months, he wants to know if he went to Bali could he obtain another 3 month visa, if so how long will he have to stay in Bali or is there another way to extend without leaving Aus?
  6. We are going back to the Uk for a holiday and wonder what's the cheapest way of taking cash back, ie using the holiday Visa card from Australia post, sending it via bank/paypal etc
  7. Came over on employee sponsored 457 temp visa, finally got the new employer will be starting PR. We will be completing the ACRO police check forms and sending them to UK ready to be forwarded when needed, question is if lived here for 2 years do we only put our UK addresses
  8. The inital mention of it was at his skype interview, but all he has is emails from his Manager and HR stating when they can do it.
  9. Really is that all, even though they confirmed they would do the PR and now telling us different? Are theyn not breaking the agreements on why we cam here?
  10. Prior to arriving in Aus, we were going through the PR process, but we were lucky enough that my husband was offered a position on a 457, they were paying for our move etc. We cancelled our PR as we were informed they would fast track our PR after just 1 year. 1 year came, told there was a hold for that year and were told it would be at the 2 year mark. 2 year mark has come only to be told they will not pay for our PR (going back on what was said initially). With various other issues ranging from given promotion over a year ago and not been given new title, wage increase etc my husband has said he does not want to pay for our visa for a 2nd time (in effect). We have some other options open to us, but we need to know, if we go home after the end of the 4 years is the company liable to pay for our return as they have not lived up to their end of the bargain.
  11. I have just been issued a disability badge after my Dr here in Aus suggested it, and this makes me wonder if I would be entitled to disability benefits through centre link if on a 457 visa, anyone else been in this situation
  12. Interested to se if anyone has ever done the Etihad upgrade where you bid, you basically give them an amount you are willing to pay and see if you are successful, have you done it and won?!
  13. Hi guys, when we came over last October my husbands employer suggested their preferred medical insurance company, which is QBE.....after recently visiting a consultant I have found out I need an operation on my knee, this is when we have found out that QBE are not a recognised medical insurance company but more like travel insurance, so are unable to pay for operation. so we tried to get the right medical insurance but have been told as we are on a reciprocal Medicare card we are not able to get medical insurance, and Medicare will not pay, I want to know how other people have managed and how they expect you to afford over $7k for one operation, without physio etc. we are currently on 457 applying for PR at the end of this month
  14. My own experience, hubby was offered a job so we were lucky in that aspect, if we had come here without work, even with his experience it would have been difficult, especially as he is applying for other jobs whilst in a job and been promoted twice, but I have been looking since last December!, I have applied for well over 500 jobs, not even being choosy, I am HR qualified, have extensive PA/admin experience, still only had 1 job which lasted 2 months and they found me on LinkedIn!!!I have gone through every emotion from frustration, deflated, worthless etc......I am now looking at retraining and getting the all important 'Australian' qualifications, aswell as doing some voluntary work. i think if we had come out here on our own steam, as originally planned, we would have headed back by now, so I would agree if at all possible secure a job before arriving, it is a great help.

    PR

Hi guys, well employer starts PR process next month which is excellent, been diagnosed with fibromyalgia which will not effect our application, but slight possibility I may have ME, but not confirmed yet, wondering if anyone else had ME and successfully got their PR or is this a medical condition which can affect the chances
  16. Hi, yes AUssie style cv and covering letter, I have 3 copies of each, I also adapt a copy of each if applying for jobs which are a little out of my field. I think after 8 months anyone self esteem and worth can be tested, hence my decision to leave its not a decision taken lightly as we came here thinking we would finally settle down.
  17. I qualified as a HR generalist, but over here HR has no 'clout', it is all split into specific areas, ie recruiting, change management etc.....HR roles are not as you would expect them to be, I have even looked at training here to obtain an Aussie qualification but very very expensive and I feel why should I, the qualifications from the UK are more advanced and knowledge based.
  18. Living on the Gold Coast and been told one of the worst places to find work, but there is plenty out there which is again frustrating
  19. it is sole destroying, espeically when you have gained all the experience, and lets face it (without being rude) more experience than the Aussies on many levels, I have been doing admin all my working life from MS Dos years and HR for 4 years before moving and I feel I am good for nothing here, even to retrain would be over a $1000. Having done call centre in the past I fully understand where you are coming from, but I have even applied for some jobs in this area and still been knocked back. I hope you hear something positive soon
  20. I am HR qualififed, and have extensive admin/reception/sales experience, I have applied for over 500 jobs ranging from reception to HR, and have had 2 interviews! In the UK I could be in a position to chose a job and always managed to get interviews. Financially we are managing, but we came here with the view of more money a better way of life, but seem to be worse off than being in the UK. Hubby staying to get more experience, as was in army all his life, if he gets a better job which if financially viable I may return, otherwise he will either come back to the UK or look elsewhere. I am not home sick, as we have travelled or been seperated by work all our married ife, I have always worked and did not forsee any issues with my qualififcations or experience moving over here, but alot tougher than I thought. It has done nothing for my self esteem not being able to find any sort of employment and being on my own all day, we have a few friends but they all work, so can only socialise at weekends.
  21. Has anyone else been in the same situation, I have had enough still no work after 8 months, more qualified than some and no job in site, totally demoralised .....we have decided that hubby is staying here with a view to looking for a better job or completing the 3 years on 457....if you have done similar would love your opinion
  22. We live on the Gold Coast just hubby and me, grown up kids at home....It is difficult to join clubs at present due to health issues, pretty much cant do anything at the moment, but working on it ans I am currently trying to locate a Tai Chi club, plus I am a very shy person which makes it hard to just go and meet people I dont know, once I get talking of course there is no shutting em up haha...regards to discussing this with hubby he has just been promoted with 7 months of starting his job and not a small promotion but a role covering Eastern Australia and NZ, of course he is delighted and me too for him, and he is so happy here so to tell him this now would be one big blow.....I am prepared to give it the 2 years but keeping my sanity in the meantime is the hardest part. And as for the comment about stop whinging, was that really necessary, we all deal differently with this huge upheaval in our lives and like to think there are people on this site that can help, not make you feel like crap at seeing such comments
  23. Only 8 months, but gone through every emotion and thought I was ok, everyone says wait for the 2 year period! But I just feel I am wasting my life away, so difficult when one wants to stay the other wants to go, where is the compromise?
  24. Struggled since I got here really, hubby been dong well even promoted to very responsible job. My problem is it took ages to get a job, I wanted to get out and meet people, instead I sit in an office on my own all day without a. Sole to talk to, I come home hubby goes to bed at 8 and out at 5am....I have had chance to see wht Aus is offering and except for the sunshine I may aswell be at home,at least I would have my family (albeit tiny).....dilemma ..hubby has even said he wants to stay help?!
  25. i too have noticed the mess around especially on the planes regarding to next to each other ....regards to the credit card being present it states that on the payment screen but still won't let you pay with a credit card with different name than on the booking, very frustrated.....we have booked with Etihad, cheap flight just hope it's not ok for her
