Need help -- On tourist visa, looking to find job and work visa!

Hello Guys!

I am new to this site. I am travelling alone to Australia in Feb '13 on a tourist visa. I intend to find myself a job there and be able to convert my tourist visa into work visa.

My Tourist visa is valid only for 3 months and I will be staying with my cousin in Melbourne.

Assuming that I'd find a sponsor with a job offer while in Australia, what is the processing time for a work visa?

Does that require me to leave Oz and get back in with a work visa or can I continue being in the country while the visa is processing?

What is "work visa" called in Oz? (Just as it is called H1B in USA)

Any tips, suggestion that might be helpful is appreciated.

Thanks all.

Grab your hard hat. What you're proposing is illegal and you risk deportation. What is your profession? Do you have a skill that an employer could sponsor you with?

Yes, I do! I'm a business consultant and leadership coach with 16 years of work experience. I currently head the business development team for Training in my company in India. I'd like to move to Oz, which is why I am looking to work this option.

Also Will a tourist visa to Australia allows one on a "short visit" to New Zealand on the same visa? Or one has to have a separate visa for that?

In which case, why wouldn't you do it properly and appply for a skilled migration visa?

What you are doing is illegal and if you are caught, and lots are, you face deportation and a ban from Australia and this can have negative effects on entering any other country.

To cap it off, your chances of getting a job are very slim to nil.

Thanks for writing VERYSTORMY.

I must say "Very Stormy" indeed! lol. Appreciate you warning me on this.

Well, finding myself a job is not the only thing I'd be looking for, I might want to explore options finding a business partner for my company in Oz too (if possible?)

Just want to make the best of my expensive holiday airfare worth every penny!

It would be helpful to know / understand answers to my questions above so I know what to expect.

This is great forum and hoping to find answers here!

Thanks again.

Ok. He you go.

The visa you would require is a 457 visa. However, there is no such thing in Oz as a general work visa. The job for which you are looking must be on the list for which you are wanting to do. Look at imm.gov.au

The employer must be able to demonstrate the reason for sponsoring is because they are not able to fill the role with an Australian. The employer then takes on a series of obligations. As a result most companies won't sponsor people unless they really have to.

There is no need to leave Oz to apply for this visa.

Processing times vary by case. Quickest can be within a week, longest could be months.

OK. That's great! Thanks so much for your insights. I now see how this might work.

Hmm (thinking)

Well, I sure hope to see something working out while I am there, if not I will probably opt for "Skilled migration visa"

Now repeating my yet another question I have above -- Can one travel to New Zealand for a "short visit" on an Australian tourist visa and then return to Australia within the validity of the visa? Or will have to procure a separate Visit visa to NZ?

No. NZ is a completely different country to Australia. You'd need to check what the NZ requirements for a tourist visa are. It might be that you don't need a visa - or you might need to get one in advance. Depends on what passport you hold.

Also make sure your Australian tourist visa is multiple entry, otherwise once you go to New Zealand you may need to re-apply for a new one.

As others have said, looking for work while in Australia on a tourist visa is very dodgy and can result in deportation and a ban. I daresay you can look for contacts to use later etc. but they are VERY restrictive on anything that smacks of working on a tourist visa. You're much better off going through the proper channels.

It is not illegal to meet employers and perhaps discuss employment opportunitites whilst you are here on holiday. However the tourist visa is definitely not designed for people to travel to Australia to look for work. It is a visa for people that wish to holiday. Rightly or wrongly, as somone from a high risk country, you could be subject to more scrutiny than others and if indeed an immigration officer doubts your motives, then you could find yourself on the next plane back with a ban.

This is not the way to go about things, there are better options, skilled migrant visa is one.

Thanks all for your responses. I am being super careful and have setup few contact already. I will have casual meetings with them on pretext of dinner or coffee and do my talking.

I don't intend to work on a Tourist visa.. however I wanna see possibilities of converting that into a work visa.

Since I have couple more months on the travel.. I am preparing well for that.

@RockDr: Business visa won't work b'cos I do not really have anyone as business connections yet to be able to send me invitation for visiting them.. meetings conferences etc.. so I was left with making a choice of obtaining a Tourist visa as my cousin helped with the invitation.

You don't nessesarily have to to hold a Visa for NZ - if you haven't been before you automatically get granted a 6 month holiday stamp in your passport - providing you have a outbound flight. If you dont have an onward flight you have to prove you have adequate funds in your bank account to live, they are very fussy on this. When we arrived in NZ my visa (working) had been granted and my husbands had not yet - when we landed he did not have an outgoing flight - we explained that we would be here for a year and were just waiting for his visa to be accepted - they MADE him buy an outgoing flight lol!

SURELY what you're planning to do is LOOK FOR WORK, which as I understand it isn't allowed on a tourist visa. At all.

If you are on holiday and 'happen to see a job' you are allowed to enquire. You are not allowed to use the tourist visa just for that purpose. You are supposed to be an actual tourist. If you turn up to the airport with your CV and business suits etc, they are going to work out what id happening. But they are never going to refuse a sponsored visa if you apply while on a tourist visa for the reason that you shouldn't have been looking for jobs.
