  1. I was under the impression government jobs usually only could be filled if you had citizenship!
  2. Isle of Skye is stunning and good time of year to visit(albeit the midgies), the drive from Glasgow is breathtaking once you get past Fort William, IMO some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world and I have seen some and it still blows my mind. Try to drive the West side of Loch Lomond for even more scenery.
  3. Maybe have a look at: https://www.sendmybag.com/ When I went back to the UK a couple of years ago and sent a 16kg bag back to Oz, door to door cost around $300. I believe they measure by the volume of the package. Worth a shot!
  4. As per the subject, have you had your citizenship ceremony cancelled by the council in charge. I ask as I am out the country and just finalised a/the date, outside the year of the approval(still in the 1 year). Long story, but the DIBP mentioned the council could still cancel the ceremony for any reason. So curious how many of you have experienced the councils cancelling ceremonies?
  5. Try another browser and see if that works, as not had any issues myself. As always clear your cache, etc to see if that fixes things.
  6. A friend who moved over 2001, who was with Bupa in the UK. Transferred to BUPA AU with no issues, and they covered his pre-existing issues that he was getting treatment for in the UK. Also had no waiting periods when he transferred the cover. Things may have changed, so best to contact BUPA UK direct and discuss.
  7. Also you would not have to pay Capitcal gains tax, if you sold it prior to leaving. So discounting the property may save you pounds in the future. Do you have you heart set on a specific area to live, or will you be looking when you arrive?
  8. Would be a good idea to rent it for at least a year until you get settled and decide on a permanent location. The market is running pretty flat in parts of Oz, so may give you breathing space... then again who knows as the Oz market is stoopid at the moment. That aside, who knows what Brexit will do in the next year to the UK housing market, as long as you have equity in your property you should be fine.
  9. good luck and fingers crossed. sounds like a great new adventure..
  10. I went with GIO, who were pretty reasonable. I had not driven for 4 years and they accepted my UK full no claims over the phone and did not ask for a copy of the certificate as proof. Depending on your age, I found no negligible difference in quotes for say a Gold GTI, Honda CRV and Fiesta Sport.
  11. http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/Work/Skills-assessment-and-assessing-authorities/skilled-occupations-lists I would first start here to see if you can find a match to your current role or something similar. If you cannot find anything, then the chances of finding a sponsor or applying directly will be very slim. The recent changes to the 457 visa have seen a crackdown and 2 different visas are now being put in place. I do not know much, if anything, about your position so cannot comment about how easy or difficult it may be to find a sponsor or apply direct. Take a look on seek.com.au, to give you an idea of similar roles being advertised.
  12. It would really help everyone if you could add what you do at the moment and if you have checked the new occupation list to see if you're still eligible. Depending on your age and country you may/could still be eligible for a working holiday visa. But you would need to review this further.
  13. Personally, if you have the space in the container then ship them. Rentals in Australia do not include white goods and they can be pretty pricey especially if you want something good. Also it would depend on how much you spent on them originally and how much life you think is left in them. Is UAE 240V? If so, they just swap the plug, if not then possibly reconsider as you need a transformer.
  14. You should also note, as I found out, you may have bought the flight on Singapore Airlines then find out the actual flight is with Virgin. Who do not have the same baggage allowance in place and as such will want to charge you the excess baggage fees.
  15. Well for a start what do you do currently would help people give you an answer... Retraining could take you a few years, and then you may find it disappears from the list!
  16. Thanks Ken for the clarification, was not aware of this.
  17. Not sure how to respond to you, as you are falling into the ageism bracket for Australia. Since you will be looking at industries with only a short course or two and probably no work experience, will probably be hard. Lots of competition and younger staff who will be prepared to take a lower salary. Are you looking to build your new skillset on top off your previous career, or moving away to anything in the hopes of finding work? Maybe take some time to look at your own key strengths and what you can bring to a new career. Things that you enjoy, hobbies and the like and how they can be highlighted as an strength. Since you are looking at a career change, maybe spend some time with a career adviser in the UK about how to reformat your CV. The format in Australia is not really that much different. You have not mentioned what part of Australia, you are both looking to relocate too. This could help the direction you want to take, based on the job markets there. How do you feel about giving up a skilled career for possibly something that is not. If you are good with people and have that "hunter" experience(over hearing sales people in the office), maybe recruitment, sales or similar. Good luck with your decisions and your move.
  18. Not a stupid question, I had a quick read of the requirements and even though I have lived there still not easy to work through it As for your question, I believe you would be classed a resident from how I have understood it. One thing to consider, if you are only coming for one year. Look at the end of year tax dates, as you may fall into 2 tax years. the 2nd would be classed as non-resident if i have read it right.
  19. https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/fares/metropolitan-fares/ Expand Myki pass. It covers use of the trams also.
  20. If this is your dream job, could you find anything in Australia to match it. If not, move! If you are unsure about the lifestyle change, weigh up the pros and cons, Scandinavia does comes out well. Cannot comment on Finland though , be prepared for shitty winters compared to Australia. But they deal with them so much better! Ultimately dream job or not so dream job and still have a job
  21. Guessing she/he is upset by something... Have you dragged him/her across the globe! Maybe a visit to pet shrink is in order! Cats have a very woman type personality(sorry if this sounds offenseift) maybe she is looking for more attention.
  22. I would initially agree with a number of the comments but after living in Melbourne for nearly 7 years and seeing the dogs that have been imported. I really feel sorry for a lot of them. They are just not designed for the climate, while there owners may love them they are suffering(I suspect). Husky dogs look beautiful BUT are winter dogs and not breed for the hot summer's of Australia. Humans seem to much more adaptable, suppose we can sweat it off. As for leaving your loved pet at home, consider your loved pet in an environment that will shorten it's life and not be a great way to die. I fully understand pets are extended family, but in reality certain climates are not are positive introduction. To add, since I have just relocated. The complex I am on, I see so many people with dogs only for them to take them out to the closet patch of grass to do Number 1's or 2's then take them back inside. SAD! Poor things getting no exercise.
  23. Brunswick/Fitzroy nice areas for socialising in, nice bars, coffee shops, restaurants, nightlife and close to Melbourne CBD. Probably classed as the hipster part of Melbourne. Should be quite easy to find shared accommodation around this part of town. Depending on what else you are looking at, South Yarra, Windsor, Prahran, Balaclava, Port Melbourne, Richmond may work. Accommodation can be hit or miss in Melbourne, quality wise. Since it is coming into to winter, bring some thermals and clothes to layer up on. The old art deco/brick houses while looking nice are crap to live in during winter as you WILL feel the cold, since they will usually/probably not have any heating unless you buy an electric heater. Newer builds will more than likely have ducted heating, but even that can be an issue depending on how the air is routed round the house. Pub culture is very different from the UK in Melbourne ie some bars do not even look like a pub from the outside, they look like they could be someones living room, others may just be a door leading up a few flights of stairs to the bar(you would never know unless someone told you about it or took you there). Buying a pot(half pint in UK terminology) is pretty normal. Public transport in all the areas I have mentioned above is pretty good.
  24. @geebee8 I also noticed when in Melbourne, BAE and other aerospace companies required citizenship for the roles. Kinda makes sense as they will be working on government projects which are classified.
  25. WOW @VERYSTORMY what a career path you have had and all those redundancies!
