  1. This brings to mind some now dated opinions about HIV. While nobody is wrong, there was a time when many people believed that by not having unprotected sex, you would not contract the virus. It is true that by having safe sex you can protect yourself, and this should be advocated. But it is also unfair to assume that a person has caught the virus by some poor decision making, as was discovered when HIV was contracted via blood transfusions.
  2. I quoted a part of your post that was relevant to what I thought. I understand you were making a point about water, but in that you stated that YOU can go months without needing Medicare. I wasn't arguing with you, or saying your point of view or your opinions were incorrect. If you are upset that I chose one particular part that's a shame but I wasn't pointing any fingers! Water is a basic necessity to survive, a point that no one would argue, and what you say implies that those who use an excessive amount are charged accordingly. 12 visits to YOUR doctor per year plus 12 prescriptions, 4 blood tests and 2 visits to an endo probably is excessive for you. If YOU were charged a lot of money for this excessive use (as you would be with water) that would probably be fair. My point is that those visits, tests and prescriptions are a minimum requirement for both survival and to maintain a lifestyle free of the associated pathologies of my condition, so for ME those charges would seem very unfair if charged in a similar manner to water. Of course some people may need more water than others, but in answer to your question I would say that estimating a baseline for water usage is perhaps more quantifiable than estimating a baseline for access to healthcare (I stress again that I'm sure I could and would be able to afford this, but it may deter others from doing so) Had this been an actual conversation the quote I took would have been where I picked up my cue to speak.
  3. If you're chronically ill you probably can't go months without medicare (or water) so anything that could make the service less accessible to people surely has the potential to contribute to more end stage associated pathologies which can't be good ? For example diabetic complications (personal experience so I might be a little subjective). People don't always deserve to be ill or to live with lifelong diseases. Diabetes (type 1) does not care if you are rich or poor. I'm sure I would be fine, albeit I detest spending money full stop lol. However it could deter some people from having regular checks that could be preventative of blindness, kidney failure etc. All of this is free in the UK and some people still don't use it which is frustrating, but it's a shame if those who want help are put off for finacial reasons. Just sayin xxxxx
  4. I would have thought that you would just use your highest grades for the visa? You may be right and it would be great news, but 2 sets of 7 means you only have scores of 7 in your ability to speak, understand and use the English language, so wouldn't that still just equate to 10 points, rather than 20 points which is proficient use of the language? Sorry if I'm being thick? ?
  5. That's very true. I've heard as bad and much worse and seen it brushed under the carpet by middle management. A senior manager once told me that despite an applicants qualities and experience he couldn't offer him a job due to the large birthmark on his face. He was laughing when he said it and implied that he would be subject to torment and bullying from the other staff! I have just realised I'm probably as bad for not reporting such behaviour but at this peticular place it was the norm ?. That's probably the only thing I can actually repeat!
  6. I do hope that the pajamas in the street thing isn't a clincher though, quite a common site round my way lol! PS don't move to Oldham ?
  7. Have you also posted on Perth Poms? You may find more responses on that forum as it's specific to Perth. Sorry I couldn't be of any direct help ?
  8. I read something to suggest that owners are able to visit for walks on certain days. I "think" it was post the 10day quarantine and it was the one in VIC. ***sorry, just looked again and that must have been prior to the change :'( ***
  9. Premium dry food which is shunned until baked beans or leftovers are added lol. Treats are carrots and apples. I raw fed when she was a pup but found it difficult to maintain on warmer days (British warm lol). She did love turkey necks and chicken wings though xx
  10. Oh dear. Sounds like it could be quite difficult financially if you have any pre existing conditions (as I do). Healthcare has always been a concern of mine with regards to making the move in a couple of years, but research suggests it would be possible. i have a managable chronic disease but private insurance to cover regular blood tests, repeat prescriptions, and visits to an endo all with my increased risk for heart disease, renal dysfunction and retinopathy =$$$$$$$ I suppose it will all come out in the wash over time, fingers crossed an acceptable compromise can be met. The NHS is on the verge of charging people for docs appointments (in addition to National Insurance payments) and looks close to collapsing so this may become a necessary (?) evil on both sides of the pond :'(
  11. There are plenty of people with real life experience who will have more valuable advice but as a starting point I'd personally suggest checking out the likes of gumtree for an idea about the kind of things that are readily available and for what price.
  12. Yay well done! I've been mad busy with uni so missed this post but so pleased for you xxx (PS always nice to have updates on the work and visa front) x
  13. Passed another module with 85% (which I'm disappointed and pleased with at the same time lol). Then i have 2 exams, 1 more practical exam and my placement (and reflective placement log) before my first year is over. Repeating your first year doesn't sound great but might set you up for a comfortable 2nd yr xx
  14. Thought I'd pop in for a quick update as Yr1 is drawing to an end x I passed another module with 85.6% and have 2 exams next week leaving 1 practical clinical exam after my community placement. I've been revising like mad over easter but I'll still be disappointed in myself when I don't know all the answers to all the questions! I'm looking forward to my second year, which in podiatry seems to be the hardest. I'm also making enquiries about the possibility of volunteering/shadowing in primary health care in Gambia. I believe that opportunities don't make a habit of seeking you out so if you want something, you have to make it happen xx
  15. How about the Times (I think) Uni of the year 2013... Huddersfield. Great student support and facilities and Patrick Stewart is our chancellor xx I study Podiatry there and we study a module with nurses, midwives, physios; ODPs and of course OTs xxx
  16. Finally got our results back from the 'real' exam last week! I got 92% so I have passed this module regardless of the result in my next exam In the words of forrest gump, that's one less thing to worry about!
  17. Hope someone comes along and helps soon! I agree it (AHPRA) looks much simpler once you arrive. I'll be watching with a keen eye, I wish I could help but I'm afraid I'm only in my first year xx
  18. Grrrrr just realised which direction you're traveling in so apologies if this isn't so in Aus xx
  19. How long have you had the car? If it's over 50% through its finance period you can hand it back to the finance company. There's a clause in (I believe all) car finance loans that makes this possible. My OH has done it once, nearly twice! Of course the finance people do their own "checks" and charge for dents and scratches, and there's paperwork and an admin fee but could be worth a look????
  20. We have one of those too. Repeatedly asking things like oooooh do we have an exam today? Why are you revising so much, have I missed something (mock exam 2 weeks ago), what assignment, when's it due? AND I hate to say it but the terminally I'll family member story is getting tired now... it just isn't true! (far too many inconsistencies together with the family member still being alive and kicking despite the diagnosis) Grrrrrrr! Annoying thing is she's become a good friend, it's sooooo frustrating!
  21. I've never had a problem, I have travelled through a variety of places and I tend to make eye contact and gesture towards my insulin before going through security, this has always done the trick x
  22. That's great news Anna! And it was only a mock exam xx
  23. I got 100% for my mock anatomy exam last week, which was unexpected, so lets see what the real exam brings next week!!
  24. Thanks! And I'm only in for between 1 and 3 hrs on tue, 4hrs on wed and 6 on a Thursday (clinical practice). Feel like I'm never there, I only have 1 assignment all year too... Shouldn't complain ha!
