  1. For heavy deposits, 'Gumption' (available at Woolies, Coles, etc) with a scrub brush and elbow grease. It works so well, I carted six tubs home to U.S. when we left. Light deposits, you can use Gumption, of course, but any ceramic stovetop cleaner will do the job.
  2. Concur with W&W, you can't anything accomplished in Australia between Christmas and mid-January.....as far as your to-do list: health cover; bank (you should do this before you arrive.....easily done via the internet at all the majors); job; rental; auto, if needed; auto insurance; TV; internet; telephone; utilities once you find a home...then you can head out to buy appliances!!!......I was Sydney based and retired, so can't chime in on other questions.....best of luck :-D
  3. Andy.... Seven years ago I emailed Alan Collett who is a regular contributor on PIO, and business man, http://www.gomatilda.com. He is a registered immigration agent, but my question was, like yours, taxes....mine being USA to Aus and vice versa. Alan connected me with a major Aussie accounting firm, and a contact of his in the Melbourne office. The chartered accountant who took on our case was golden. I would highly recommend you contact Alan and run by him any of your questions.
  4. In NSW they did. Came in handy when my son took a bounce off the jungle gym....
  5. MR 02, no different here.....the lunatic liberal fringe has a long standing love affair with Hamas, and is now ready to march and sing songs against Obama, if he dares to do anything about ISIS........I scratch my balding head......
  6. yeah, it really say something about this clown when Ray Hadley thinks he's an idiot.....Ray should know!!!
  7. Jules, there you go!!..If Gin can do it, so can you ;-D....After you download the app form, have a look through it, self assess, then decide what's best for you. Cheers!
  8. Did my wife and kids 309/100 back in 2008, and her 155 Return Resident last year. The 100 was a real pain, (ton of paperwork, lots of hoops to jump through) the 155 not so much, just updating some things. That being said, Jules, all the visa apps are different and you may well need professional assistance with a 189/190; I am not familiar at all with those so don't want to lead you down the garden path. Perhaps someone with experience with the 189/190 will chime in. You may have to post your query in some other topic string??
  9. Jules, from experience I found the easiest way to locate the list was to download the application form number for your visa, and the checklist will be included in that form. The checklist(s) are on the website in other places, but may be harder to ferret out.
  10. Any documents that need to be certified are driven by the visa you are applying for. This information can be accessed at the DIBP website.
  11. @pomtastic, I took my list of everything from TV to coffee maker to Harvey Norman, Good Guys, and Bing Lee. Bing Lee beat everybody, out the door and delivered, by $900 for the lot. And, as Que Sera Sera mentioned, http://www.appliancesonline.com.au, is getting a lot of play, and the prices are very good. If interested in used, http://www.gumtree com.au, and http://www.craigslist.com.au

    D Day, 6th June

I think I can say with some certainty, that without those sacrifices, we'd all be goose-stepping and downing a steady diet of red cabbage, spaetzle, and sauerbraten......

    ...good on ya, Bobj....
  14. Absolutely do-able....I did my wife and kids 100 a few years ago, with no problem getting it through. As Adam Grey said, you have to make sure all your paperwork is squared away, all t's crossed and i's dotted, at time of submission, or that can throw a wrench in the gears at the DIBP end....best of luck!!
  15. I jumped on Medicare and ATO for TFN immediately, using my cousin's address, which was my temp address for about 3 weeks. Notified them of permanent address later. No worries, much as 3FC indicated. Address isn't so much a thing, as having all the proper paperwork and docs ready to go.
  16. Yeah, ring them up, as suggested, or if you are close to an Immi office, you could pop in and get it sorted. We did this for my children a few years ago in the Sydney office. I wanted to eye ball an agent to ask some questions, and she provided us with the application paperwork and away we went. I am sure they would rather you do it online, but they were fine about it.
  17. Jordanl, if you mean only hyperlinks (making it hard to navigate) and no graphics, yes. It seems to be an on again-off again problem. Run by Aussies!!...whaddya expect, mate ;-D
  18. If you acquired another citizenship, as an adult, between January 26, 1949 and April 4, 2002, then you automatically forfeited your Aussie citizenship under the old Section 17 of the Australian Citizenship Act of 1948. If this is not the case, you are probably still fair dinkum. That being said, as Skippy1 pointed out, there is always a 'but', especially in Aussie immigration/citizenship law. I would take a look at the Australian Citizenship Act of 2007 in its entirety, including the most recent amendments to that document. Also, a phone call to your local consulate or the Embassy will get a definitive answer.
  19. I used the parent company of UKForex, that being OzForex, back in 2008-2010 to transfer my US pension to my aussie bank account, on a monthly basis. Don't know about now, but then they were one of the best firms I have ever dealt with for just about anything.
  20. http://www.airbnb.com, http://www.homeaway.com.au, http://www.vrbo.com, http://www.gumtree.com.au, are good places to start.....
  21. Based on the information below from the DIBP website, I don't see how you qualify for citizenship at this point....... Australian Citizenship Act 2007 Residence Requirements To satisfy the residence requirements you must have: 4 years lawful residence in Australia. This period must include 12 months as a permanent resident immediately before making an application for Australian citizenship
