  1. we took everything back but most furniture was to big for the houses we could rent in uk & we couldnt even sell it to other people for the same reason. you forget how small the rooms are in uk houses after a while. we couldnt even fit all our pots & pans & dishes in the kitchen cupboards so i would get rid of most things & just start again fresh when you get to uk.
  2. i dont think government will take much notice if people on temporary visa dont like the changes because aussie people are pleased with the changes. when our local member visited a community meeting near us people complained the changes didnt go far enough. maybe better to spend time looking at a permanent visa to apply for if people want to stay in oz permanently.
  3. we took the children to our local dawn service this morning. i was surprised how many people came considering we live in a small town & its raining. i like the way people show respect here & remember the sacrifices made by others.
  4. this happens to me every time my family visits us. it usually takes me a month or 2 to get over it. it doesnt happen when i go visit them probably because i get reminded of all the things i dont like in the uk. but when they come here everything is just perfect.
  5. it must play on there mind otherwise they would move on instead of spending time on a forum about oz. rubbishing oz is probably a coping mechanism if they are stuck in the uk now but just getting on with life would probably help them get over it more. its a terrible feeling to go back to the uk & realise you made a mistake though. i was lucky & got to come back to oz again. i dont like to think how it would of felt to not have the option to come back to oz.
  6. if you said what areas you have already explored it would help
  7. only if you get a green arrow to turn. you should download the road rules & read them so you dont make an accident.
  8. what do you mean you can turn right in most red lights?
  9. i am asian & live in a rural area & the people are lovely. they are also very well travelled & up to date on current events. they knew more about brexit for instance than some of my friends in london did. you shouldnt stereotype people.
  10. you wont have anything to worry about. ozzies are nice to everyone except the ones who want to change oz to be like the old country they came from. pauline hanson has said about chinese people but i think she was talking about rich chinese investors pushing house prices up in sydney & chinese companies buying up farming land. i am asian as well & havent had any problems at all. i even met pauline hanson once & she was really nice. she wasnt anything like the media make her out to be. there is nothing special your daughter needs to do to fit in. if she is friendly the other kids will be friendly.

this is very sad news. he was a nice man & will be missed. thank you for taking the time to tell us. so sorry for your loss.
  12. if your mum wanted to come to oz she probably would of said something by now. even if she did change her mind & want to come now i imagine it would be difficult to arrange although a agent would be the best one to ask. i dont think you should feel any obligation to uproot your family from oz to go back. some people do it but not everyone does & its different for different people. my parents would be horrified if i uprooted my family & give up my life to look after them. they always say its a parents job to look after children & not childrens job to look after parents. everyone always says elderly support is brilliant in the uk so i would look into that for your mum. dont take any notice of people who judge you. they dont know you or whats best for your family.
  13. you are making a big move so its normal to feel unsettled as the time gets closer. most people seem to get a bit nervous. it would be more of a worry if you didnt get a bit nervous i think. congrats on picking such a lovely place to move to. my husbands cousin lives there & he is always saying how much he likes it. although its a country town its a regional hub & has lots & lots going on & has a lovely community feel. my husband cousin says it has all the benefits of a city but without the problems. we went to visit last year just after the big country music festival they do every year. it sounded fab & i was sorry we missed it. good luck with your move & enjoy your new life
  14. thats exciting. the time between then & now will pass quick :jiggy:
  15. i dont know why you need to be so rude. i wasnt rude to you.
  16. i thought you were talking about media in oz as well. anyway im off to the beach.
  17. i havent seen or heard anything about uk weather except from friends in the uk on facebook & a few posts on here. why would you expect reporting in oz unless something bad happened like extreme flooding or a major pile up on the road due to fog or icy conditions.
  18. if you are leaving reluctantly because of your work situation in perth you should consider a move to the east coast of oz as others already suggested. there is a lot of construction work over on this side of oz. everything from housing to big commercial projects. my husband builds houses & he has a waiting list of clients so long he has decided not to be accepting any new work for the rest of this year till he can catch up a bit. even though his business is based on nsw south coast he is getting a lot of enquiry from as far away as sydney & canberra with people trying to get projects underway. anyway good luck whatever you decide to do.

    A Decade in Aus

great read ali. i know what you mean about feeling content. its a lovely feeling & one i share. i cant imagine living anywhere else that i would feel the same sense of inner peace & rightness that i do now
  20. i had doubts just before we moved back but we went anyway. i guess i thought it was just the jitters so ignored the feeling. i had also badgered my husband into it so i was a bit worried about saying i was having second thoughts. being back was great for a little while but not so great after the novelty of being back wore off & i realised i should have just gone for a longish holiday to see my family instead. in some ways im glad we went back though because it made me realise i really did want to live in oz & i might never of worked that out if we didnt go. thankfully we are back in oz now & i am totally happy & settled. nobody can tell you whats right for you though. although i wonder if you would feel more settled in a job you like. anyway as long as you can come back if you change your mind again the only thing you will lose is money which is a pain but not the end of the world.
  21. well that sounds fairly normal except where we are they are messing around at the beach or at each others houses. my kids a little but there are young teenagers next door & i saw a rather largish group of them just arrive there. it looked like they had been to the beach & were planning to raid the pantry & fridge next door ha ha. i think he just needs time to find his feet which im sure he will do with your encouragement.
  22. i think its lovely that you want your kids with you & that they want to be with you. having a close family when my kids grow up is something i hope & pray for. congratulations on achieving something so many people want but miss out on. i hope you find answers to your questions but i would probably just talk to a good agent as has been suggested.
  23. perhaps if you say what the things are that kids in the uk do that kids in oz that he knows dont do people might be able to offer some ideas to help with that aspect. if he is into sports he should have his choice of clubs & activities where you live. as a teacher though i can tell you kids at his age can think the world is ending one minute & be fine the next so i wouldnt be doing anything rash. i think it is critical for kids to learn resilience as well so for that reason alone i wouldnt be switching schools so quickly either. he may have made friends quickly in the past but it doesnt always work out that way & he hasnt been at the school very long or given things a fair chance. i dont think it would be helpful in the long run to teach him to cut & run if things dont fall into his lap. it is hard to do this as a parent who loves a child but it is a critical life lesson.
  24. i can only imagine you walked around with your eyes closed if you rarely saw any kids playing on the equipment in oz. as a young mother i can assure you the parks & play equipment are well used in our town. we also visit family in canberra regularly & the parks & equipment are well used there as well. i would also add the number of well kept parks is brilliant & they cater for all ages from really little ones like mine to the older kids. & shock of shocks they are used all year round.
