  1. Hey guys did you ship or sell your smart TV’s. Also will TV’s bought in Oz (mine is a Samsung) work in the UK?
  2. Not sure why the OP is posting this now as it was reported by the ABC back in November 2018, but I agree, very very sad. I feel terribly for his parents regardless of the rights and wrongs of the application being denied.
  3. Hi all, Just after a bit of guidance. What is the best way of getting rid of stuff like : * second hand Ikea furniture (TV stand, desk etc); * bed; * fridge; * sofa I presume people generally wouldn't buy stuff like that second hand, or would they? If so, what sites would be best, Facebook Marketplace perhaps? I have thought about using freecycle to perhaps get rid of a bit of stuff, but (although the idea is great) I have read really negative reviews about time wasters. With stuff that I could probbaly sell such as smart TV sound bar etc, did you guys just arrange for people to come into your house to pick these things up? Thank you. :)
  4. Hey Den, have you made the move yet? I’ve got my citizenship 6 months ago, nothing left for in Oz, I’m aiming to return to the UK by next March (for good), so I better start planning the return move.
  5. You and the fam would be ideal contestants to go on that show Wanted Down Under! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/1JLbRbPnHh03VC4221JN9Z1/family-updates-2019 Australia is great. It’s not paradise though as others have said. It’s not objectively “better” than the UK, except for maybe the weather, but even then I find winters here colder than the UK due to the pitifully poorly insulated housing. Generally jobs pay more here, but I don’t feel like I am accumulating more wealth here than I would in the UK, as cost of living (in my opinion) is higher. It can be hard to make genuine friendships over here, but that’s probably not unique to Australia. However be prepared potentially for periods of feeling lonely / isolated (especially in Perth which has a reputation for being insular). Good luck with whatever choice you make.
  6. This is classic sexual harassment, ie conduct of a sexual nature that is unwanted / uninvited that causes the recipient to feel intimidated / humiliated / offended. The conduct only needs to occur once to amount to harassment. In your instance it’s happened to you three times. I work in professional conduct in Sydney (I won’t say who for) and if this was investigated and the allegations were found substantiated, we would probably dismiss for this. If you have not done so already diarise with dates, locations all the occasions this has happened with the exact words he said to you and raise it with your supervisor. If it is investigated the difficulty may be proving the conduct as it does not sound like there are witnesses who could corroborate the complaint. However this should not put you off raising the issue. No one should put up with being sexually harassed.
  7. The features of these internationals is they always seemed to be played in half empty stadiums such is the appeal of rugby league.
  8. By the way Latino which part of Oz are you in?
  9. I love Sydney and Australia but get where the OP is coming from. This is very subjective so don’t shoot me down, but for me Australia doesn’t quite have the soul that the UK does. Anyway, Latino79 you will regret not giving the US a shot. You’re still young so don’t waste it living in a country which is making you unhappy. As Wayne Gretzky once said you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Success only comes to those who take action.
  10. Depends on the circumstances. If you lost your job for a serious criminal charge / conviction, then that would have to be declared.
  11. As long as you declare it (I wouldn’t have thought it would come up in a police check yet if you are not yet convicted - I could be wrong) you should be fine. I’d be very surprised if they refuse your visa based on DD.
  12. Sorry to hear that Steve. How incredibly frustrating and soul destroying. You’re not the first to talk about the insularity of the job market there. It puts me off the idea of even considering ever moving to Adelaide.
  13. No offence OP, but it doesn’t feel right or fair that you should be able to deduct one year from the P.R. residency requirement on the basis of your 21 month hiatus overseas.
  14. I’ve heard it being said that Adelaide is Australia’s most English or British feeling city https://blogs.fco.gov.uk/paulmadden/2011/07/01/adelaide-australias-most-english-city/ Would you agree with that?
  15. Adelaide is the only major Australian city I haven’t visited. Those that have spent time there, does it have a distinctive vibe different to the likes of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth?

    Meetup

Anyone every tried the meetup app? If yes, What did you make it? Did you find it a useful way of meeting people?
  17. How’s the job hunting going Steve?
  18. Sydneysider here. I’ve always heard Adelaide job market is a really tough nut to crack if you don’t have local / Australian experience. Keep us filled in, I hope you find something soon.
  19. What are your memories like of that very first day being home getting off that plane knowing you had returned home for good after what may have been a long journey being in Australia?
  20. Hi Lavers that is good news hopefully the rest of the UK economy is not too impacted by the Brexit uncertainty. High streets though (in the UK) still look like they are struggling.
  21. What is good about living in Australia is being very far away from the never ending toxic mire the UK is in over Brexit, illustrated recently by the comments of a fairly well know left wing female comedian who has fantasies of throwing acid at politicians she does not like.
  22. On a side note, it seems like you have a successful life in the UK with a growing, thriving business. Why would you want to give that up by coming here and potentially having to start all over again, especially at your age.
  23. And / or don’t get on with their family lol, they probably have it easiest in terms of migrating, I have met poms here like that who have no reason to go back to the UK for that very reason.
