  1. Difficult situation, all the best! PS props to your ex husband as well for letting you go with your daughters, knowing they are more happy in Perth.
  2. Would be nice if they extend the project with a rail from Wannerroo to the CBD as well :chatterbox:
  3. Although I definitely agree on the point you made there. Money can save you a lot of headaches and trouble. So, yeah it can certainly "buy you happiness". Will money alone make you happy? No. But if I have a simple house paid off, I can buy all my general expenses and only work for like 20 hours a week while still supporting my family, then that situation would make me more happy than working my ass off 60 hours a week and barely being able to pay for general expenses and a cheap mortgage. It's a balance between how you get the money (ie working your ass off and other stuff you can't/have to do) and what you will do with that money. There is a threshold in which money becomes less and less of a happiness factor. And the price you have to pay in other fields of your life are not worth the extra money. I have a picture in mind of my ideal reachable situation (also materialism wise). It does require a good amount of money, but nothing too overly expensive. Even if I would make a million dollars more...I wouldn't acquire anything else, because it wouldn't make me more happy. I would rather work less than make more money for example.
  4. I hope I can reply in this topic saying we will ping pong in about 6 months from now. I am more reay rhan ever before to live in Perth again. I had to move back home to get this feeling. Unforunately my OH hates the moving and although she LOVED Oz she currently says she doesn't want to go back. Very likely because she is afraid i want to move back home again. Which I can understand. She's very tired and sad from our move, almost in a depression. So i have to give her some rest now, and in six months time when she recovered I can bring it up again and hooefully she sees my passion and determination now (which I completely lacked before) But man until then... I feel ****. I am soooo excited to go, but i can't share it with her... With nobody!
  5. I thought I knew, but maybe I don't... I thought it was that I missed family and friends. In retrospect it was probably also that I couldn't work with my business partner any more (yep work has a big influence on my life). But I find it hard to determine id those are the reeeeal reasons. I am pretty sure, but how can I know for sure? I did notice by coming back that I loved Oz more than I thought and although we have good friends in the Netherlands, we also made some friends in Oz. And our daily lives are less great then back in Oz (partly because of the opportunities Oz provided). That is by no means a generic comment that Oz provides a better lifestyle, it just does for us.
  6. Thank you for this topic We moved back to the Netherlands 2.5 months ago. It felt like a mistake after a bloody week and it still does. I hate not being able to analyse myself! When we left I thought: out lives in Holland are good, but we think we can have a better lifestyle down under. We love summer, hate 4 seasons, love nature, space and a challenge. When we were in the airplane I was depressed already! Finally feeling I said goodbye (farewell?) to friends and family. Felt bad the first six months. Every day I was questioning where I wanted to be. After 6 months I decided to go back home, but not when. The six months after that were great. I had peace in my mind and enjoyed Australia. then we went on holiday and saw friends again. When we left it wasn't easy, but not so hard as the first time. However my company went down the drain (bad partner) which made me feel depressed again. I wanted to go back to the Netherlands again: finally family and friends around me, easier when we are having a baby with our extended family and better work opportunities. and as soon as we landed I feel bad again. But different than when we landed in Oz. I don't have a lot of doubt where we should be. I want to go back!! I feel miserable here. The weather sucks, it is cold, raining and windy. It's boring (for our lifestyle) and family is driving us nuts. There are two (maybe three) things that keep me from moving: finance wise I have a massive opportunity in the Netherlands, but that might take 2-3 years to deploy. My girlfriend didn't want to leave Oz, but can't leave her friends and family behind now and. I don't want to get frikking homesick again... if it wasn't for the finances I would go back in a heartbeat. Now we'll probably make a decission the end of the year. But I hate waiting so long! I can't talk to my girlfriend about it as she wants me to try it here fiest. But I just feel so miserable
  7. Sometimes you need the ping-pong to feel good. And if you stick to just 'ping' and are happy that way, that's fine as well, right? Same thing with where you live in Oz.
  8. Love the way you wrote it down. I hope I'll experience it the same way as well within the next 12 - 18 months if/when we go back :cute:
  9. Exactly my thoughts and reasons to move back. Now I'm back and see how MY LIFE changed again coming back and I wonder if that was worth it. We adopted a different lifestyle down under and can't do that back home. The every day warmth, climate and hobbies you could pursue the whole year round had a serious impact on how we felt. The heat every minute of the day, made us so happy. And that's so hard for us right now. But having the option to call any of many friends right now who will be there for you, is so important as well. Only to realise We had a few friends in Australia as well who would do that for us. Both my heart and mind are split in two. And it really feels like bleeding every day. I wish I never thought about migrating at all. Sure it can enrich your life, but for the last 2 years (both in Australia and back home) it feels like a burden instead.
  10. Selling stuff with a timeframe in mind is horrible. Cars are the worst imho. For us gumtree was the best source for buyers by far. We had two cars and we decided we would sell one of the two cars as soon as someone offered the right price. That happened quite quickly, so we had to carpool together for a while. We sold the last car 3 days in advance and we could bring it a day before leaving. They offered a price. I said that price is okay if they can pick it up on the day before we were leaving. Otherwise the price would be $200 more expensive as we would need to rent a car ourselves. They weren't too happy with that, but did it anyway. They made a small deposit. We had two backups for the car: - The best plan B was a friend who would be willing to sell our car when we left already. We filled out the vehicle transfer papers as far as we could. - Plan C - "we buy any car" like websites. They give you a low price, but better than nothing. Good luck!
  11. Everyone in Australia should have one of these. So as a new migrant, pick it up for this historically low price

  15. Yamaha WR450F ‘08 - See it, hear it, love it. Best price ($4,995) Come by and have a look and see this dirt bike yourself. You will instantly love it. As soon as you hear the engine running you know this is a good bike. This bike had a full service with Derek’s mobile motorcycle Mechanic about 12hours of driving ago. During that service it got two new tyres, a new chain + high quality sprocket and the fork seals got replaced. So you can enjoy and ride many hours to come. Great care has been taken of this motorcycle. How do you know? You will get two oil filters, a sealed can (1L) of oil, chain oil and air filter oil with it as I still have that left from the regular maintenance. The bike is used and the stickers are not the most beautiful and the barkbusters got black tape around them. This is actually an advance, because that’s one reason the price is reduced. You can replace it with fresh new ones if you like. Don’t make an appointment yet, just based on that information. We are moving out of the country. We rather have you buy this bike in time before we are in a hurry. That means you get a great fixed price: $4,995. Other bikes of this year of manufacturing are at least $1,000 more expensive. The rego date is the 26th October 2014, so that's free for a while as well. Obviously I have only this bike for sale, so help yourself, contact me today and make an appointment. Please Private message. Yamaha WR450F 2008 Kilometres: ~3500 Registered: Yes until 26/10/2014 Also advertised elsewhere.
  16. Yep, my office is in the CBD - St georges terrace. Sure there are some people wandering around, but that's not a lot. Maybe it's just a different opinion of our definition of "city life and buzz". Never been to Freo for nightlife though.
  17. Definitely true. Didn't think of something so easy (much cheaper and less exhausting flight as well by the way)
  18. We got some quotes from Perth to the Netherlands (20ft container - door to door, including packing by them, excluding insurance) * Around 4800 euro - around $7500 AUD (old moving company that brought us here. 18 months ago it was 4100 the other way around, but we had a bit less stuff.) * between $7000 - $9000 quotes by a local company (we don't have the final quote yet) * Getting a quote from the other company soon as well. Flight tickets between $1700 - $2200. I reckon that's about it. edit: I wouldn't sell all out stuff here and buy new stuff home. Selling it here first would be a lot of effort and we probably only get $2k for it or something. Just buying a new tv, surround system, computer stuff and our dinner table, dressoir, coffee table and couches would cost us roughly $6k again. Not even talking about all the little things.
  19. On the other hand are the stories of people who return and are happy. Not sure about you guys, but even 6 weeks can be a dreadful long time, when you are done with it. It's so easy to say "just hang in there for another year". But a year is a Loooong time. Life events are likely to happen in that year. Family or friends get kids, people get sick (or die). Not saying you shouldn't wait for citizenship. That's entirely up to you. I just think people don't value time enough. Don't forget that even the richest people in the world can't buy time. So enjoy it every second.
  20. Interesting idea. Especially because it is a cheap car. That doesn't mean it's bad. Absolutely not. It's just not a very big car and isn't the newest. But if we would have stayed, I would have driven in it myself for years to come. I'll keep it in the back of my mind Together with gumtree and a used car dealership.
  21. Thanks for the feedback people. We have two cars as well. So we will sell the more expensive one first. We'll start advertising 6 weeks before we leave. Hopefully they bite. Not sure what we have to do otherwise The cheap ass car, we'll bring it to a used car dealer I guess. Cheers
  22. How do you deal with selling your car(s) at the last moment? Did you offer it super cheaply to individuals? Or did you sell it to a car dealer?
  23. FOL

    Selling up

    No worries, enjoy!
  24. Who moved from Perth to the UK? Who did you talk to and get a quote from? What were the quotes? Who did you pick and why? We went through a few threads and OSS seemed good, but they don't do moving from WA. They recommended Chess, so we'll talk to them. But I am curious about your experiences.
