  2. The length of the visa process is entirely in the hands of the Immigration Dept. So it can take less, or longer, depending on the individual circumstances. A 6 month trial period seems like a bit of a stretch to me. I wouldn't have thought an employer would want to go through the whole process again every 6 months until they get the right person. I expect that the "permanent" they mention is only in relation to the job; it will be a full-time permanent position until the visa runs out. Temporary visa holders can take their pension contributions back to the UK when they leave Australia at the end of the visa, or earlier if they leave, get fired, made redundant etc.
  3. Usual replies about this topic always mention the usual pitfalls of a 457 when there are families involved. Temporary visa, no guaranteed pathway to permanent residency, school fees, possible future international Uni fees, possible international Uni fees if you return to UK, substantial school fees in some States, 90 days to leave the Country if the primary applicant loses their job. There are some pro's. It's not all bad. Just make sure you get all the info you need to make a reasonably informed decision. The secondary applicant (you) can work in any job you like; there are no restrictions (other than for some Govt jobs which require the applicant to be a citizen). Some temporary visa holders have reported it difficult to find work in their chosen career due to the temporary nature of the visa.
  4. Evidence? For what? You have been in the role for 2 years already. So that's the evidence for the sponsored position. Other than that it's just the usual background stuff; places, dates, family history, work history etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. I'd be surprised if you have anything that will be sucking 10A out of the wall socket. Larger items; fridge, freezer, washing machine etc; just change the plug to a standard Aussie 10A plug. They are a few $ each in Bunnings. Larger 15A plugs don't fit in standard domestic wall sockets anyway; the earth tab is too large to fit. So 10A plugs are your only proper option. For smaller items that are often grouped together like TV/DVD/speaker system, then changing the plug on a trailing socket will help mnmise the number of plugs to change. Usual caveats apply; get an electrician to change the plugs if you want to be totally legal! [emoji12] and don't plug everything in the kitchen into a trailing socket! If your circuit breakers start tripping then you know you've gone too far!
  6. $0.83 a minute. Jet star and Qantas should be worried. Not bad. Can you fly me to Sydney for that rate? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. They don't even let you check in until about 5 mins before your allotted appointment time. Well that's what it's like in Melbourne anyway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Not a good situation. You do get 90 days though. Unfortunately there are many on these forums in the past whose promise of a transition from temporary visa to a permanent visa has not happened for whatever reason. Hope you find something soon!
  9. If the sponsoring company have never sponsored before then they are in for a shock too. Lots of hoops to jump through to meet the requirements to be a small business sponsor. Pretty sure he'll need a skills assessment. Whether he'll pass it is another matter. He qualified over two years ago, but he's been on a WHV for the past 2 years, so he's unlikely to have the required experience. (Depends what "over 2 years ago" means. 3,4,5,6 years ago?) Best to contact one of the agents who post on the forums here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. You would make a bit of a saving at tax time because if you have your private cover, you won't then need to pay the Medicare levy. So bear that in mind too. Watch out what isn't covered though; it might surprise you. We've got the highest level family cover with GU Health, and there is still plenty that isn't covered, that we have found to our cost. 11. Yes, you just have to keep looking further out and weighing up the the local amenities with the requirements to live in the area and commute to work elsewhere. Millions do it. We're in the same age bracket as you and it'll be another year or so before we'll be looking to buy, once we're finished with local schooling for the kids, and likely then to be moving further away from the city and the current local area where we rent (and love!).
  12. Thanks. I just spat tea on my computer screen! :biglaugh: So there's no cars in the sea, but there are lots of cars on the Monash. And thats todays traffic report from CaptainObviousFM. Tune in later for more news on traffic reports of traffic queues on Flinders Street, but strangely no queues of traffic on the Yarra which is right beside it!
  13. But there are wild animals in Canada that will kill you given a chance! Oh; wait a minute........
  14. Oh it is! Will likely be selling our house in Killie in a year or so. Will do mates-rates!
  15. Doesn't your 2007 passport prove that?
  16. Ah, in that case, yes for me, but for personal reasons.
  17. Generic answer - Identify risks, eliminate or manage those risks as required.
  18. There's plenty of Foreshore camping sites down the peninsula. Might be worth considering.
