  1. No, didn't ship mine. Sold it in the Uk, and then later on I bought exactly the same bike, but a newer model, here! I wouldn't worry too much about spares for a mainstream brand. Often main components are the same, engine sizes are often different because the cylinder bore is just made bigger. And there's always the choice of shipping a part from elsewhere in the world. 3. I think you're right about the rarity of it in Australia. You don't see a lot of Katooms here. I don't think the 990 was sold here; but the 1050,1190 & 1290 are sold here. There is a forum member here who does vehicle imports. Have a search for Iron Chef, there is an ongoing thread where they calculate the worth in importing the bike. Edit; the thread is called "Is it worth bringing my car? The Iron Lady's trusty new calculator reveals all!" Sorry, don't know how to link to it in Tapatalk on iPhone! 4. Here you go; this should give you an idea of whats available around Frankston. I just searched for Frankston and surrounding suburbs, up to $350pw. http://www.domain.com.au/rent/frankston-vic-3199/?ssubs=1&price=any-350
  5. Whatever floats your boat! Adults make adult decisions according to their own requirements, aims, ambitions, standards. No point judging others based on your own set of rules. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Stand by for lots of people jumping in to tell you that the 457 visa is temporary for 4 years, not permanent. Relocation expenses of $12 won't go far if that is for flights, belongings, establishing permanent accommodation (rent and bond) etc. Maintain your standard of living? Depends on a lot of things, but assuming you are from Falkirk.......... moving to Sydney......... I know where i'd rather be. Sorry about 1997 and all that! I actually drove the Killie open-top bus!
  7. Hi IanGPE My visa path in Australia was 457 for 4 years, employer agreed to sponsor me for permanent 186 in year 3 of the 457, and the paperwork eventually went in. Due to the time that the application takes (around a year for me), we had to renew the 457 for another 4 years, then a few months later the 186 was approved. Fast forward a couple of years and we became citizens. My "private" health cover whilst on a 457 wasn't done through a recognised health provider (such as Bupa) in Australia, but it was done more like a travel insurance policy with a provider organised and paid for by my employer. It reimbursed me for any expenditure on health that I had (and I had a lot due to some serious health issues). This benefited me hugely because I got every cent back. With a more recognised "normal" type of private cover, you will find that providers always have gaps in their reimbursements where they will only cover 70% for one kind of claim, or 50% for another, maybe 90% for something else, and you are left to cover the shortfall. 457 holders still get full reciprocal care through medicare due to the arrangement between Australia and the UK. This ensures that any emergency care is taken care of as required (ie if you break a leg, have a heart attack, etc etc). I think that asthma inhalers can be bought over the counter in pharmacies here. Someone will likely confirm that or shoot me down in flames! I'm asthmatic in the UK but not in Australia! Go figure! I've never needed to buy an inhaler here in 6 years! Things you may want to find out from your employer: Is your pension included in your figures for your salary, or is it salary PLUS pension? What is their expectation of the business plan for the next 4 years and what would they expect from you at the end of the 457 visa? Have they moved staff on internal transfers previously, or is this something new to them? (lots of hoops to jump through if they are new to this) Would they consider progressing to a permanent visa down the line? Maybe offer to assist with the costs? Do you have kids? Try and negotiate something for a contribution to school fees! These can be expensive! Are you able to use the lump sum for shipping as you see fit? It would be good if it was a big enough sum to also cover the bond and first months rent for your permanent accommodation! (If your HR dept organises the shipping, they might not actually spend all of the entitlement they say they are giving you if they go for some cheapskate option!) Assuming that you meet the criteria, and can pass a skills assessment, you can of course apply for your own skilled independent visa at any time you like. If you can't pass a skills assessment for your occupation, then you could also use the option to progress to a permanent 186 employer sponsored visa (assuming your employer is in favour) after 2 years on the 457. If you can pass a skills assessment, then you could apply for the same visa whenever you like (again assuming employer agreement) but I would imagine that after spending $$$ on the 457, that your employer might want to see some value from that spend firstly. Have a look at the websites for the big supermarkets (Coles, Woolworths/Safeway, Aldi) to get a quick feel for costs. Have a look at carsales.com.au to get a feel for the price of new or used cars. (or ebay too for used). Have a look at websites for Telstra/Optus/Virgin/Vodafone etc for costs for internet/mobile phones etc. Try and match up your searches on realestate.com.au for accommodation to the travel maps for the public transport system to work out commuting times and costs etc.
  8. Playing with words. It doesn't matter what badge you pin to it. 457 is still migrating for those who choose that option. Many people with skilled independent visas "migrate" and last only a year! It's still a migration. Birds migrate; it doesn't have to be a permanent move to still be a migration! The OP's question was specifically about costs for migrating and also possibilities for sponsorship and relocation packages. The costs for migrating are largely similar for getting you, your family and belongings to Australia and setting yourself up with accommodation and transport, regardless of the visa option you choose to migrate on. 9. Is it any different to a tradie taking his tools? They are all utensils to use in the workplace. If you own them then wouldn't they just be placed in a container and imported as personal belongings with all your other stuff? I'm not an expert; so others may have a different view. 10. It has often been said here that DIBP are well known for giving out incorrect information. They are just machines who process applications against a given criteria. There is no come-back on any info they disperse, whereas a registered migration agent is fully responsible for any info they give out. I would suggest you contact a registered MA. There are many who frequent these forums. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. I was lucky in that my migration cost me zero. Yes I had full employer sponsorship with a relocation package. It was an internal company transfer, but I guess that if you are the only person with a desired set of skills and a company is desperate to get you, then you would be in a string negotiating position. Unfortunately in the current economic climate, I think such migrations as mine would be few and far between. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  14. It must be a Melbourne thing then! Barefoot shopping year-round, even in a Melbourne Winter; adults in PJ's at any time of the day wandering around the supermarket; shoppers in swimming costumes; shoppers in onesie's; saw a middle-aged guy a few weeks ago wandering round wearing only a small pair of shorts! Nothing else! I've never encountered any jostling in a supermarket. They are often smaller than UK supermarkets but they are located everywhere (every suburb, every major road junction, every shopping centre), so it's not like they are particularly busy with shoppers in my experience 'cos there's just so much choice; certainly not as busy as the huge Tesco or Asda superkarkets in the UK.

  16. No point waiting another 6 months if the time you have already put in is still valid after the restructure. The lawyer is only making a "suggestion", not a definitive ruling. It wont strengthen any case by waiting if all the criteria are still being met.
  17. I got my passport in under a week from submitting it at my local post office. Did the passport check thing my local PO on the Monday, and I collected the passport from the passport office in the City on the Friday iirc.
  18. Your PR visa has already been cancelled now that you are a citizen. Your previous visa is now irrelevant. Australians must enter and leave Australia on an Australian passport. Apply for it now, it doesn't take long to get it.
  19. A pass is a pass. They are of course duty bound to give advice and report on any other issues they may find. Advice to see your own GP in due course; that sort of thing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa/Fees Add to the visa cost the estimate for physically moving people and belongings, accommodation upon arrival, health checks during visa application, police checks, food and subsistence upon arrival, general cost of living whilst looking for work etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. They are mainly looking for medical issues which could potentially cost the taxpayer a lot to treat. Cancer, TB, etc. I wouldn't have thought that some time off work due to stress some time ago would be high on the watch list at the medical. And I say that with all respect to your previous condition, sorry if it sounds a bit glib! Best of luck. Don't worry too much about it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. The doc at the medical will ask you for a brief summary, in your own words, of your medical history. It's really up to you what you disclose. Assuming that you do disclose this, the doctor will make a judgement whether he needs further supporting evidence. He may be happy that the symptom is now well in the past and is no longer relevant. If he does need further evidence, he'll give you a letter asking you to provide a statement from your treating medics. This needs to be returned within 28 days iirc. 23. Yes, they were indeed. It was quiet when we were there, and we got a table right next to the open fire! Lovely!
  24. Tea and scones, or something more substantial, at the Signal Station at Mt Nelson. Lots of history, and great views too. The views from Mt Wellington are pretty good if its clear of cloud at the top!
