  1. I'd suggest you live somewhere in the Ryde area, especially North Ryde, as it's a nice area with good schools very convenient to St Leonards and well within your budget for rentals. Macquarie Shopping Centre is close by, ice skating rink, Lane Cove River Park, good public transport etc. The commute from the inner west would take quite a bit more than 40 minutes I would think and the houses are significantly smaller.
  2. It's usual in your mid 40's-50's, a bit unusual in your early 30's but not unheard of. As long as you can see clearly with your new glasses then there's no problem. (I'm an Aussie optometrist)
  3. I think this area is only available as a Bachelor degree - UniSA offers one.
  4. Within Victoria people go to Lorne and other beach locations on the Great Ocean Road, the Mornington Peninsula, Daylesford (spa country), the Grampians, Phillip Island, houseboating on the Murray River, the snowfields and plenty of other places. Within Australia as already pointed out Merimbula on the Sapphire Coast in NSW is popular, and the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coasts in Queensland, Cairns in far north Queensland, and also Tasmania. Many people also go to South East Asia such as Bali and Thailand, or to Fiji or New Zealand.
  5. Redbacks are shy and live in dark, undisturbed places like unused sheds and under decks. They don't seem to move more than an inch in their whole lives, they just stay put. You would NEVER find one in a used cot. Funnelwebs are really only found in Sydney in a few suburbs, they are quite rare and most Aussies never see one. They too are only found outdoors, they would never be in a cot. There aren't really any other dangerous spiders to worry about. If you are very concerned you can have the house sprayed for pests. A much bigger issue for babies is mosquitoes, you have to take great care to not let them into the house on summer evenings. Once again having the house sprayed greatly reduces the number inside. To avoid any chance of spider problems don't leave shoes outdoors and wear gloves when gardening.
  6. Hi there If he has good experience he shouldn't have too much trouble finding work. The shopfitting area is quite weak at the moment with tough times in retail, but he'll still find something. He might have more luck in residential. I'm currently studying to be an estimator myself. Civil estimating is where all the work is right now. Good luck.
  7. Windsor Road/Victoria Road has absolutely awful traffic. I'd suggest living somewhere on the M2 like North Ryde or Lane Cove, or perhaps in Parramatta. Even then it will still be a fairly long commute.
  8. Hi there lensgirl You haven't given any indication of budget or what kind of work or housing, so I'll just list a selection of different nice spots in Adelaide so you can get a feel for what they are like on a recce. Take a look at: Lockleys West Lakes Brighton Modbury Magill Beaumont Stirling Mt Barker Blackwood Hyde Park Happy Valley Seaford The most upmarket areas with the best schools are mostly in the south east and inner south If you want to look at rural centres try: Mt Gambier Port Lincoln Murray Bridge
  9. Hi Em I think you are far better to wait until you are here for any surgery or other treatment, so that any procedures can be followed up by the surgeon/optometrist etc who recommended them. It's hard to say what options you have from over here but perhaps there are other contact lens options eg scleral contact lenses or if the situation is really bad you may need a corneal graft. Hope it works out for you.
  10. Hi there I'm an Aussie optometrist (not in Victoria though) and I'm not sure what you would like to know. Intacs have not been popular in Australia, as research has shown that the majority need to be removed within two years of insertion. I'd suggest you choose an optometrist who is a member of the Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia - they tend to be more specialised in keratoconus. http://www.cclsa.org.au/about_cclsa.php Let me know if I can help further.
  11. Hi there I think it may be helpful to narrow down what size city/town you are looking for (1 million people, 50,000people?), and the climate you prefer. For example Queensland has warm winters but humid rainier summers, or the southern parts of Western Australia have hot dry summers and mild winters.
  12. Hi It's a bit hard to know where to recommend without knowing workplace location, but perhaps take a look at Beecroft/Cherrybrook, Wahroonga/Hornsby, and Frenchs Forest/Brookvale areas. To see something a little cheaper try Carlingford, Baulkham Hills and Hornsby Heights.
  13. Hi Tinkerbell That really is a bit too broad a question to answer properly. Do you have an idea of budget, work location and preferred commute times, any particular preferences eg strong wish to be near the beach, public transport needs etc? The main/best known family area in Sydney with large houses with pools etc would be the Hills District (around Castle Hill) but there are so many more. Terrigal is definitely too far - it's not in Sydney. If you are able to give us a bit more detail we can help you a lot better. Cheers S
  14. There are some really great bits and some long boring bits. Go via the Great Ocean Road, which is longer but much more to see and do, but don't bother taking the coastal road in SA as there is even less to see than inland - just salt plains and saltbush as far as the eye can see. The section from Murray Bridge to Naracoorte is flat, dry and featureless. Naracoorte is a very interesting little town, with a great swimming lake (definitely worth stopping for a break on a hot day), lots of natural sinkholes, and prehistoric fossil caves. In Mt Gambier visit the Blue Lake and feed the wild possums at Umpherston sinkhole. The Great Ocean Road has spectacular views, especially from Apollo Bay to Lorne. I suggest taking around 3 days for the trip, stopping in Apollo Bay and Mt Gambier as a minimum. The trip is not much fun if you just plan to drive straight through.
  15. Bus driver? http://jobs.nsw.gov.au/en/Features-and-campaigns/State-Transit-Authority.aspx I'm pretty sure there's a shortage so no problem getting a job.
