  1. Although it is almost 10years ago now, our daughter went to Wellington Point State School and she loved it there, we were very happy with it.
  2. I know of a teacher that had a PGCE and it was not recognised in Queensland, not sure why so she had to complete the Graduate Diploma in Education
  3. Some dance schools offer a 'professional year' and don't be put off by them also being a regular weekend/evening dance school as my daughter attended a reputable, high standard London dance college (on a full scholarship) and when she visited the dance schools in Brisbane she was astounded by the standard of the dancing. Many school age children complete their Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 RAD ballet, qualifications that in the UK are in the main only completed at the full time dance colleges.
  4. According to the ATO tax would approximately be $9097 per year, not 17.5, it is $3572 + 32.5c for each dollar over $37,000. the figure of 17.5K would be more accurate for someone not classed as resident for tax purposes. Even a temporary visa can result in being resident for tax purposes as long as you meet all the criteria.
  5. Conroy Dance offer a full time course. http://www.conroydance.com.au/cpac/ The standard is high in Brisbane, in fact I would say comparable to some of the full time colleges in London.
  6. I don't think people should get hung up on 'who posts what' and 'where they post it from', it is a forum where people are free to express their feelings and opinions including posting links to news and other information they think people might like to read.
  7. I would agree with everyone else.....bring the warm clothes!! Getting up early for work means sometimes the temperture is 6 degrees, which is cold anywhere in the world.
  8. We considered Perth but what put us off was that it was a long way to any other Australian city, so we chose Brisbane and love it here.
  9. We rented a furnished apartment in Brisbane for 4 weeks and found a long term rental in that time
  10. Congratulations, and good look with the move.
  11. We were 44, 40, 17 and 10.....best thing we did
  12. When we first came, we didn't settle and decided to make the move back. Taking the pressure off to settle, in the end made us settle if that makes sense....and by the time we were looking at flights and cancelling the lease on the house we decided that actually, we didn't want to go back. We moved house to a different area and everything fell into place.
  13. Great post Ali, I remember the feeling the first time we said 'do you remember when......', we now have memories from our life in Australia and it felt fantastic
  14. Some people like to have their opinion, but then do not like it if you opinion does not agree with theirs, as if their opinion is the only one you can have. An opinion is exactly that, and it would be a very one-dimensional world if we all held the same views on all topics
  15. After being in Australia 8 years I still find I have times when I am 'homesick'.....but it's not homesick for the UK, it's homesick for a certain few people that I miss incredibly. I do not want to move back to the UK, I love my life in Australia, it would just be even more perfect if the certain few people were here with me.
  16. Good to hear you are finding your feet after the traumatic start to your adventure. No amount of planning can alleviate the feelings you have when you first arrive; I remember it well.
  17. I think it is hard to say as I only have experience living on the South side of Brisbane in the Cleveland area. We very much like it there and Brisbane is only 25km away, taking around 45 minutes to drive in if the traffic is good, and the airport is only 30 minute drive away. I would find it hard to list preferences if I were asked to do so as the state is very diverse and each region can offer such a different lifestyle.
  18. We are a family of four and spend between $150 - $200 a week on food. Most meals are made from scratch as it is way cheaper than buying processed food.
  19. The Kelvin Grove campus is really nice and definitely worth looking at to live...busway has regular buses into the city too.

    Small Doubts

I think sometimes human nature makes us want what we can't have, and when we can have it you then have doubts. I know this happended to me. Doubts are bound to creep in when you are moving out of your comfort zone. Once I looked upon it as an adventure and not a move for life, the doubts decreased and I enjoyed life in Australia better, settled better and now wouldn't live anywhere else.
  21. Remember that here you can nearly always get some money knocked off the price, just ask them what the best price they can do it for, and then haggle some more. I agree that whitegoods and tvs have a wide range of price from really cheap to very expensive. When we came over we just bought cheap to get us up and running and then replaced things gradually once we bought a house and knew more about brands.
  22. I agree with everyone else, I would let my 16 year old travel by herself, maybe ask her to text you when she finds the gate, boards the plane etc so you have peace of mind
