  1. Hi, Have started applying for jobs anywhere in Aus remotely (from UK). Have only used Seek so far. Any tips and/or alternative methods of applying for jobs or getting my CV "out there". This can be for lining a job up or for getting leads set up going to Aus in the near future without already having a job lined up. Thanks in advance!!!
  2. Thanks M2M. Can I ask where you gathered the info? Cheers
  3. Correct. Anything that you can access via the Internet in the UK will now be available from Aus
  4. You need to subscribe for a VPN/Proxy service - basically gives you a UK IP address. Haven't used one personally, but one that gets recommended a lot is: http://strongvpn.com/ Pretty decent rates.
  5. Cool. It's the commute to/from work I'm worried about. I guess a tie can be worn as I walk into the office, if it comes to that....
  6. What's the normal office attire (not interviews, just day-to-day work) in Sydney or Melbourne? Is it shirt and tie? Or just a shirt? Surely you're not expected to wear a tie in the middle of the Australian summer. I think I would melt
  7. I guess it depends on your circumstances. Me personally, I intend to go to Sydney, alone, with a suitcase and do a flatshare (fully furnished), then looking for a job from there. I will have around 5K GBP. I'm sure that can keep me going for a few months without a job, but would be disappointed if I didn't get a jobs within 2 months.
  8. Excellent thread btw. Very informative
  9. Yeah, you hear some doom & gloom stories, then there are some green shoots: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/australian-it/it-jobs/it-employment-tipped-to-improve-as-tech-chiefs-plan-big-year/story-fna12gpc-1226399160429 Like you say, mixed reports.
  10. Relocation with my current employers looks unlikely. I'll be applying for jobs remotely soon, but if I have no joy, I'll have to just get a one-way ticket and see if I can get a job when out there. Bit risky, but that's life I guess....
  11. Thanks for responding I'd probably earn about $70 - $80k as a perm. I'd also be looking to live in a nice area (Manly/Eastern suburbs), but would probably flatshare, like the guy you knew. I currently get around 30k GBP, so I guess I'd live a similar lifestyle, or maybe just below?
  12. Do you still find this rings true today? I'm a mid-level Cisco network engineer in SE England wanting to move to Sydney. I've heard mixed reports of the opportunities over there and how much they pay. I find it hard to get definitive answers! Ho-hum
  13. No worries. Thanks for the update  I'm guessing as long as one is willing to work at anything (even McDonalds), for a few months, until the right IT job comes along, then one cannot go wrong. I'd like to think that with several years networking experience with a FTSE 100 company would land you a similar role sooner or later, no matter what the economy is like. I guess the problem is how it works out economically in relative terms compared to the UK. I'll shut up now - thinking out loud, on my keyboard
  14. Does anyone know what percentage extra wage a contractor can expect compared to a perm. In the UK, it is around 50% to 100% extra. Is it the same in Sydney/Melbourne? Thanks in advance
  15. Hi Graemsay, Sorry, I'm not having a go, just trying to ascertain the facts. You say that Sydney seems to be doing ok for IT roles, whereas a little later you say that things are bad in the east, where Sydney is, obviously. Do you know for sure if things are bad or good, or do you mean they are good, but may turn bad? I'm probably translating your posts incorrectly, hence I need the clarification
  16. Yes, I would also like to hear updates. I was going to head over to Sydney in early Nov, but may be a little too close to Christmas and the slowdown of recruitment, so have decided to apply for jobs from UK Nov, and possibly just go to Sydney in late Jan regardless of whether I had a job lined up or not. I would then take my chances from there. I work in IT Networking - at CCNP level. Anyone else applying remotely? How's the IT job market these days?
  17. I work in the IT industry, as a Network engineer and want to live in either Sydney or perhaps Melbourne. I'm wondering if going in November might be a bit late in the year. The last thing I need is to arrive there and then support myself without a job until say February because the country more or less shuts down. Is early Feb an ok time to arrive then?
  18. Actually, you already said so in your post! Sorry. Good to hear that it's possible to get something lined up before you set off. I guess when you have a plane ticket book and confirmed date, it makes it even easier
  19. Hi All, I am available to go to Australia after Oct this year. I'm thinking that it may be a little close to Christmas to go this year, as getting a job may be difficult. Perhaps I might be better going in late Jan 2013? Comments? :em4500:
  20. Hi Rob - do you mind me asking what industry you work in? Congrats btw
  21. Just go out there mate. A young fella like yourself has absolutely nothign to lose. Go for a year regardless - you can always go back home after and more or less pick up where you left off
