  1. I’ve not really been to Scarborough for a couple of years (other than to eat at the new Sun & Moon place) but, to me, some of the area is a bit dated. Living-wise, if you mean the bit that goes up Scarborough Beach Rd towards Doubleview & Ossy Park, not keen. If you mean the bit that carries on along the highway to Wembley & Claremont, that’s nice, but you’re talking million dollar +++ across the board. There was talk of a $30M spruce up for the beach front area itself and I think it would be warranted. I don’t mean to say it’s crap or anything, I mean, it’s great, but you’re spoiled for choice really; I just think that there may be better these days. If set on the area, IMO, I would look at the places either side of Scarborough e.g. North Beach & Trigg or City Beach. However, they’re probably a similar price range. You don’t really have to live in the locale where you want to hang out though. I think some people occasionally place that restriction unnecessarily.
  2. Funny you should say that, we went to a bar/club there for a Xmas party just gone that I never knew existed. We were just led to a lift in the casino and it went upstairs to a load of function rooms I've never seen before. Bit night-clubby and dark for me but Ok if you like that sort of thing. Don't know what it was called but it wasn't the big night club. We were by the pool area all day, that place is great. Kicked on to the Merrywell and couple of other bars before eating.
  3. If you join as a member, they've been doing the $199 offer about once every 3 months or so. This was the 3rd time we'd stayed.
  4. Stayed last weekend, $199 offer on again. Went the French place, Bistro Guillaume, prefer it to Rockpool. Dessert was chocolate souffle with cherry ice cream. Ridiculous.
  5. Good post Bibbs. Sounds similar to us socially, we have no kids either. Needed saying that, it's not correct at all when people say there is nothing going on or nothing to do.
  6. She probably won't be so smug when he gets round to kicking her head in.
  7. Asda is atrocious. There was a Morrissons near us and that was even worse. The food in Asda doesn't taste of anything.
  8. There are about 200,000 Poms in Perth who, I suspect, like it. There are about 6 posters on here who don't. Its not representative, they just shout loudly.
  9. We have a Dyson and it sucks up all the stuff off the carpet and tiles. This makes me happy as that's why I bought it. I paid $500 from the Good Guys, how much are they in the UK?
  10. Oscar's is still there, I just think that new one is next door. We had a walk around those shops a couple of weeks ago, quite good there now. I always liked Oscar's, that Sushi/Teppanyaki place is good, the British chippy is good, had a sarnie and a coffee in the London cafe place, the butcher's in the shopping centre has always been a winner, the new pub is OK. The Chinese there isn't much cop and the shopping centre itself is a bit last. I always find the beer selection in Murphy's is crap. Brilliant for everything else but I can never get pale ales!! The Indian at the Marina has changed again, nice. They also have a shop in Clarkson. However, there is a better one is Clarkson, right by the other one I'm on about, can't remember the name. The food at the Boat has gone lame again, after picking up for a bit. Likewise, the Indian Ocean, I enjoyed the tapas for a while but they haven't been as good last couple of times.
  11. Can’t relate directly to the teenager issue but something said in here rang a bell. The whole social media thing, keeping bang up to date with news and events from the UK etc. can be a hindrance to settling I reckon. One of my sisters-in-law is never off Facebook, knows every move her friends are making back in the UK, is never off the Liverpool Echo website, knows more about what’s going on in Liverpool than Perth … I could go on for hours. The upshot of all this is that she has never really settled in Australia. And she's 30-odd, not 13. IMO, part of the reason is that, she hasn’t moved for herself, she moved for her husband and family; and they are all chuffed to bits living over here, but she isn’t. So, maybe some parallels there but, yeah, the social media stuff can get too much sometimes I reckon. Great when you need it but, if it wasn’t there, she probably would have got on with her life over here a bit better.
  12. Buying an investment property is old news. What you want to do is find an older place on a big block, knock it down and duplex it. Much better returns. Not that I'd know, I don't do this sort of thing, just know a couple of (loaded) people who do.
  13. My brother-in-law did it for 1 or 2 shifts, then packed in. For the hours you do, in the conditions you work in, with the sacrifices you make, doesn't sound worth it to me. The money's not that good all things considered.
  14. I tipped a girl in the pub on our 2nd day here and she looked at me like I was a sex criminal. So, I haven't tipped anyone since.
  15. To any newer members, if you're looking for any advice, general tips on anything, just do the opposite of what dustyroad says.
  16. To be fair, I spent 2 nights in Doncaster in 2004 and I'm still not sure I'm completely over it.
  17. Poor bloke asks a question about IT recruitment and the trolls are out. Couldn't you start a separate (yet another) thread to do the bashing?
  18. Germans probably. They're taking well more than the UK.
  19. Just read two posts about (1) snobbery and (2) dog poo. In my experience, there is much more of both here than in the UK. Granted, about 90% of the snobbery I've encountered has come from Poms, not Aussies, and is usually materialistic bragging, like Poms tend to do. Regards the poo, not sure if the dogs that did them were Poms or Aussies, but there is definitely more knocking about, although I've still not seen any white ones.

    And another one....

If you went to school in Liverpool in the 80s, there were always tons of stories about what this bloke got up to.
  21. I walked past the shop front on Saturday and there were no 'closed down' signs or anything.
  22. Agree with most of that. Australia is blue collar working man's paradise. Less so for Management Consultant types on a grand a day in the UK. Like you say, no bad thing.
  23. The police should be able to charge their parents and recoup the damage bill through civil action. Then maybe they'd take an interest in what their kids were up to instead of sitting at home and getting plastered themselves.
  24. The pace and quality of life is preferable here for us. Also, I reckon the food is much better. We seem to save money here, we didn't in the UK.
