My 5 month old puppy got his 1st kicking today ,am slowly letting him off the lead when out.

Today he ran off at the park from me ,to see another dog ,this dog was not to happy to see him and beat him up .My dog came running back to me as fast as his little legs would go.

Now here's my problem ,i have not cuddled my dog (as it was wrong for him to run off) .He is now sat in the corner looking so sad (for getting a kicking) .

Should i cuddle him and make him feel ok ?

Never known him so quite

How long ago did this happen..if it was a few hours then go ahead and treat him normally, but don't over do it. He has to learn that it was wrong to run off but also that he has to come back. He may have learnt his lesson by being beaten up!!!

Good luck.

Poor puppy, he is only a baby! Give him a big cuddle and kiss and make him feel better.

It is scary when you do let them off lead and then they run as fast as their legs can carry them.

My girl has run from me a couple of times and I don't trust her off lead now unless she is in a confined area.

Bet he is your best friend as my girl is my best friend.

I would give him a cuddle, the other dog punished him and he did run back to you! When we took our dog to puppy school, they told us only to show disapproval immediately after the event, if you punished them 5 minutes later they would not remember what they are being punished for...

Hi Eddie

I assume that you cannot possibly be serious?

Some years ago, my OH and I got a black Labrador puppy. When he was about a year old, I think he must have been teething because he ate EVERYTHING that would irritate his huming keepers. He ate a brand new wicker Ali Baba laundry basket that I had only just bought from John Lewis. Chewed it to bits so that the only solution was to go and buy another one. He chewed the toes out of one of each pair of office shoes that I possessed (several) wrecking all the pairs of shoes in the process. He chewed 3 electric razors that OH had left lying about within his reach and he chewed every plastic flower pot in the shed.

We were in close touch with a specialist Labrador vet at the time. I asked him what to do about all this chewing? He said, "Never, ever hit a dog. He does not know that you consider it wrong for him to chew everything. Roll him over onto his back and embarrass him instead." The vet showed me how.

Ever afterwards, we rolled Chocky onto his back and told him sternly, "Did you do THAT, Chocky? Did YOU do THAT?" I assure you, Labradors can do Creepy Grins. Chocky used to wrinkle up his lips into a creepy, obsequious grin that the average crocodile would have admired. The expression on his chops said, "I know I've done something wrong and I know you are not pleased with me, but I do absolutely lurve you to pieces and I will always lurve you no matter how upset you might be with me, I promise you that."

You couldn't help loving the labradoidal mutt right back. It wasn't his fault that he was born without brains.

Cheers

Gill

I think what Eddie means by his ''dog got a kicking'', was that it got ''beat up'' by another dog, lol, not that Eddie physically kicked it (although for a second when i saw the title i did think the same, lol).

His dilema is he doesnt know if to cuddle his dog because its now feeling sorry for itself or to ignore its pittiful face best he can as it was naughty for running off in the first place.

I think i would give in and give it a big cuddle, lol, but i am a softie with cute puppy faces, lol

such a cute puppy! want one!

In response to the original question, we were always told that when your dog does something wrong, i.e running off, peeing inside etc. you need to respond to it immediately other wise they won't know what's going on. So when he came back to you after his little escapade, you tell him off, tap his nose, however you choose to discipline him and then that's the end of it.....2hrs later if he's still sulking he's probably confused and won't relate you not paying attention to him with him running off. Same reason why if you come home and there's dog pee on the floor, rubbing their nose in it won't stop them doing it...they probably did it hours ago and can't even remember lol.

It worked for us anyway

A dales farmer told me to bite their ears ,its what their mothers did to sort them out , my lad was 6 months old on the lead and this old fart had a gsd it was noted he had it off ther lead and it went for dogs ,this time it went for my dog gave him amauling finishing with my left book in its bolos , after that he would go ballistic if he saw a gsd . he had a couple of seconds but he would lose it . This happened till we came here ,out of jail ,took him to the dog beach ,he`s ab out 25 metres in front , I spots a big gsd , i st off doing a good impression of chariots of fire lol, too late sniffed it and walked on. I was gobsmacked first time in nearly 10 years he`d not gormed a gsd . Take note of the breed mate cos your pooch will
