Have you written your CV yourself? If so, I'd suggest you get some professional assistance from an employment agency, even if you have to pay.

You may be very competent at doing a job but, if you can't express that in well written English, you don't even make it to first base. Remember that first impressions are vitally important.

Hi Cranky,

My line of work is specialised and opportunities are few and far between so what you are experiencing is all too familiar and was typical of my experience of working in the UK. I found it frustrating to have to dress down, re-word and sometimes dumb down my CV too. I've never lied on my CV and never would but just the act of taking out large chunks of information to get a job felt like being untruthful! Don't forget that you can do a lot with the cover letter / e-mail, sometimes you get further if you phone them (if they offer a number and invite calls of course) so you don't always need to hack your CV to bits to get somewhere.

I second the advice to seek out a professional if the cost of doing so is practical at the moment. I had some great advice when I last went through redundancy and it helped me to get that breakthrough that I needed. Unfortunately that was in the UK and I'm not entirely sure if I've got my CV right as far as the Australian style goes but I was told that what I've got should be fine so I'm soldiering on with it for now.

Best of luck with your job hunt and the future:smile:

I came over in July 2008 so before the current 'GFC' issues - but I used my UK CV - with a few changes in terminology only - and had a choice of 3 jobs within 3 weeks. And I'm happy to say I've been in the role I chose ever since!

As a lot of people already over here are aware, they use a lot of different words to us over here - so getting someone who's already working in the industry you're trying to get into to proof read should help. I work in Accounts & no-one knew what Sales/Purchase ledger experience was - but change it to Accounts payable/receivable & they got it!

I know the feeling Cranky!

Can you believe this one!! I was working for a crappy company on award wage which was good for me as I got finally got work after 6 mths. Worked there for 10mths asked if it was possible to leave an hour earlier a day (4 my daughter to have fortnightly orth checkups) and they sacked me FOR NOT BEING DEDICTAED TO THE JOB ENUFF!

Cant do anything about it as I werent there 12mths.

Since then for the past 2mths, been trying to get a job (accounts) and its impossible, especially now they (prev emp) buggered it for me in getting fulltime. They've written me a very good reference but stated the reason why they terminated my employment, now im fked!! Part time only!!

Feel quite depressed bout the whole bloody thing! Now I know what the Poles feel like LOL!!

Good Luck Cranks

Are you using a Aussie cv template? I have their style template and notes if it helps mail me with your email and I will send it over to you

Morning Lyn I have not been able to get hold on an australian CV Template so I been using the UK format and had it checked by a friend who worked in HR back home but like you say a few words may need changing but hard to say which words you could change as working in the Banking/Finance industry for several years should mean the same thing here. Is it possible you could send me a Australian template

Yea i had the same problem with my last employer who made it hard for me to take time off to go to the baby scans but found that there was a law allowing me to take time off for appointment such as these and took it further. I believe it is against the law here to provide a bad reference here.
