Hi Folks

Never thought this process would get me as stressed as it has.

Now looking for some serious advice.

We are expecting a CO in the next few days hopefully. We have medicals arranged for 11/5/11, fom 80 is being completed and Police checks will be going off this week. I am sat here watching the Aus$ getting stronger by the day and our budget becoming exceedingly tight.

Can you pay the second VAC before it is requested at the High Commission in London in sterling or do you have to wait for it to be requested. I am looking to try and pay before the 1st July before the Gov rate drops even more and destroys our chances for the the next few years.

Any comments appreciated.

Hello

You definitely need to wait for the final VAC request, but given that today is only 3 May, you still have plenty of time until 30 June. And as others have said, do watch the rate, because after an extreme run of gains as we have seen in the last few weeks, you often get a correction. However the fundamentals don't seem to point to any short term improvement for sterling via dollar.

Cheers for now.

Steve

Hi everyone,

not being posting very much lately but I've been watching you all - could do with some help. I've now moved in with my youngest daughter until I fly out on the 2nd June. I'm trying to find a company who can provide insurance cover for just the few days of travelling which includes baggage cover - not having much luck at the moment. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well done to all the CPV'ers who have now got their CO's & those who have the VISA's.

I've only got just over 4 weeks before I fly now, still feel nervous but excited as well, I know that I will really miss my younger daughter very much, it's such a difficult decision when you leave a son/daughter behind. I know that there are lots of you who have had to make the same decision

good luck

We are paying £20.65 for Wanda and I to go on our 1 week validation trip at the end of this month. We used http://www.moneysupermarket.com/travel-insurance/ to find the cheapest.

 Why not buy a weeks cover and forget to come back?

One way insurance looks a lot dearer.

Our quote came from Debenhams Insurance and was cheaper via the above web site than going to Deb's direct.

Either way have a good trip. :wubclub:

There was a movement on the website, for the word had passed around

That the COs down in Perth had run amok

They were calling all the Parents – they were worth a thousand pound!

(If only!...)

Well, the email arrived this morning – we have our CO, after just 10-1/2 months! EEK! :arghh:

A bit too early, really, as we have booked meds for late June, and before that need to fit in a couple of specialist meds, in order to get reports to take with us to the panel doctor. And in between we are booked to travel to Germany to visit a friend...

So I guess the emails will have to fly back to Perth to try to slow things down a bit...

Meanwhile, full ahead into form-filling mode!

Mike & Sue

Steve: CO date 3/5/11; meds due 29/6/11 (I'll let you know if we have to bring it forward)

Wow - even quicker than us - CONGRATULATIONS

2 days till our medical and AoS in place so not long now. Masons came round yesterday to give us an estimtate and PSS due next week. The race is on.:chatterbox:

Can't book flights till our house is sold so who knows when that might be!

Can any one help me with a query? I have just had my letter from Santander telling me my telegraphic transfer for the assurance of support money for 14,000 dollars has cost me £9,419.95. When I arranged the transfer I was told it would be £9,200 so obviously the exchange rate altered during the transfer. What I am wondering is what will the second payment for the visa be? I know several people on p.i.o are at roughly the same stage as I am and I know that the price is fixed from when your application is acknowledged.....Feb 2010....in my case, but what kind of price am I looking at now?

G'Day

We applied in June 2010 – ie, the same financial year as you – and we've just been quoted (in a letter from our just-"appointed" CO) $A41,190 (for two people).

The April 2010 version of form 990i confirms this – $A20,595 per head.

Classic case of banks charging more than UKForex etc, you pays your money and makes your choice.

Their rate appears to be $1.486 which I have not seen below $1.50 yet on any Forex site. Then again some people do not trust the Forex type sites so have to pay the bank's premium.

Have you allowed for the $150 change to set up the account with Commonwealth?

If you mean the cost of the 2nd vac payment I think it is $34,330 per person if yours is in the same year as ours.

On Oz/UKForex site as I type that would cost you £22,709 @ $1.5117 to the £.

No idea what Santander would charge. :jimlad:

Thank you Mike and Sue and thank you Les for your helpfull replies, I paid through Santander because I didn't know any other way.......obviously a bad choice. Would I be better asking my daughter and son in law to pleeeeeeeeeeeeese pay our second installment in dollars out of their bank account in Australia and then send them the money (by some other way, not through Santander)

Thank you for any help

Short answer Yes!

If you want to go down the Forex route have a look at http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/money-finance/

lots of threads on there and lots of helpful info.

We opened accounts with Moneycorp, HiFix and UKForex (also know as OzForex).

We have only used UKForex because their quotes have always been just that little bit better plus I like using the internet against having to phone for a quote.

You will need to get your daughters bank account details so the money can be sent direct to their account. We have found it takes 3 days to get from our Nationwide account to UKForex and then about 24 hours for them to send the $s to our son's account. We had sent most of the money out to him over the last year so we only had to send a smallish amount to complete the deal at a time when the rate was low.

We are now using any spikes in the rate to send out our first years rental money.

PM me if you need any help.

The timeline is falling like a stone! Anyone any idea why? Is it the strong AUD$, falling UK house prices, a combination?

I suspect it might have something to do with the approaching end of the Oz financial year (30 June) and the desire to top up government coffers!

It occurred to me that they were simply rushing to fill the quota and get the dosh in by 30 June! Our application ackn date was 22 June 2010, so we were expecting to hear from a CO maybe sometime in June, but now they want our info and meds early June, so they must reckon there's a chance of getting our money before 1 July!

Hi

You are flying the same day as us (if our visa ever comes through - still waiting!). I believe the post office also offer a one-way travel insurance which lasts up to 17 days after arrival. Just beware of taking out a normal insurance unless you read the small print. Some of them stipulate that if you only travel one way the insurance ceases as soon as you pass through immigration. We are also looking for something which will cover us for medical costs, just in case, and will give us time to register with Medicare etc. We are also leaving a son behind so it's very difficult, but hopefully he and his partner will join us soon.

Yes, it's difficult not to get stressed isn't it? We have Masons coming next week to give us a quote. We can't book removals till we have our visa and they need two weeks notice! We won't be sure about selling our house till contracts are exchanged! And the second of June is getting nearer and still no visa email today.:arghh:

If you are asked to pay before 1st July you might be better paying to the Australian High Commission in London in £ as the rate is currently 1.53 something.

This one looks reasonable for a one way trip.
