How can a country,America which has turned into some kind of Aristocracy,a country run by and for the rich even dare criticize us?Whether it is their media or polticians .I don't think the USA is in a position to criticize any country in Western Europe let alone the UK.We have things like the NHS etc. We have the BBC with no adverts every 5 minutes like US tv.I can name many, many more things that benefit our citizens in so many ways.--These things are representative of a civilized country.NOT socialism.

Have you ever lived in the USA? If not, then plz keep your criticism to yourself. The one thing about Americans is, we don't judge other countries. There are ppl who could take offense to your flippant comments. I, being one. It's only YOUR opinion, & it shouldn't be posted publicly.

No I have never been to the USA.---It is not my intention to offend anyone either.----However I must disagree when you say Americans do not judge other countries.American contemporary media alone has declined to the point of it being among the most biased, judgemental, dishonest, outright rubbish around.------ --I have nothing against Americans either.I actually used to admire the US in many ways. 1 example of many things, the great cinema and tv Hollywood 'used' to produce.Contemporary US cinema etc. is rubbish but that is a different topic.----From what I know the USA was a great country in the past, however due to some very bad policies and politics over the last 20 years or so it has really declined.

I have lived in the States, and to the extent that "socialist" means at least a minimum standard of living, housing and health care, guaranteed for all, then for sure we are socialist in comparison to the USA. Along, probably, with every other western country other than the States. And what's wrong with that?

What I would say over in the States though is that, even though it is patchy, the private welfare machine is pretty good. Food kitchens, homeless shelters, free school meals privately funded through donations. So they do have welfare of a sort- but it is more a case of private citizens helping each other because the taxpaper can afford to, but won't, foot the bill.

When it comes to the media, though, I prefer the quality of news coverage in the States. Take Cumbria as an example. If that disaster was unfolding in the States, various media channels would have been live streaming it over the internet, at least showing an awareness that there would have been a significant number of their citizens living abroad who would have wanted to know the disaster unfolding at home. Instead, the BBC only livestream in the UK, and if that weren't bad enough, they took hours to turn up when the disaster was unfolding. We had to watch SKY to get live coverage. And, to rub in the misery of what a pathetic excuse for news coverage the BBC really is, we go onto the NBC - yes, an American channel, - and the quality of the coverage of the Cumbria fllods - OUR floods, I might add - was really good.

I agree, nothing wrong with it.--I guess the term "socialist" that I used in my very poorly worded opening post was wrong. And as you know in the UK we have a more compassionate, ciivlized and better system in many ways because we have a 'proper' mix of socialism and capitalism.--I just don't like when I hear about some Yanks almost calling or imlying that we are like some kind of communist(the term I should have used in my OP) type of country. And I see this to often on American media.--

To lizzy27--I actually feel sorry for contemporary USA.--And I hope your country can get back on track.I am not the first person to call the USA(what it has become) an "aristocracy".Many, many people here in the UK,throughout Western Europe and so on have that view now.I do hope the USA can get back to being the country she used to be.And again I'm not trying to insult anyone, just being honest.

Quite right too.

The one thing about Americans is, we don't judge other countries.

I take people as I find them wherever they are from but this is not at all true of Americans who are just as quick to judge as anyone else.

Back in agreement with you. YorkshireLad, I do wonder why you post here, why you posted what you did here? That's a rhetorical question by the way.

Don't think it is all the media criticizing the UK....just the far right wing media trying to destroy Obama's health plan proposal.

Just read this thread.

The UK IS a socialist country.

The UK is currently run by an ex-Trotskyite (Darling, university membership) and an ex-Marxist (Brown university membership).

At a guess ..... Leopards spots may fade but not dissapear altogether.

Just to put my opinion, I would call UK socialist as well as it has a social conscience and looks after the poor and needy and perpetuates some people remaining that way as its all too easy.

I also believe in socialism but probably not to the extent of the UK.
