Questions about flying back to Aus

Hi there,

I have two questions...

✈️ I'm returning to live in Sydney in April and wondered if the Heathrow-Perth (-Sydney) flight is available at the moment? It appears to be bookable on the Qantas website but I recently read that it's not available due to the strict borders in WA. I flew Singapore last time and they were fantastic, perhaps I should go with them again. Like many I'm sure, I'm nervous about losing money from Covid related cancelled flights too. Any opinions on airlines would also be appreciated.

🤢 Also any tips on travel sickness? I was sick 17 times (sorry if anyone is eating right now) on the way back to the UK last year and it happens on every long haul flight, utter hell. I drink tons of water, avoid alcohol, don't eat too much but... I haven't tried travel sickness tablets — has anyone found them to work?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Happy New Year to all!

I'm booked on Perth-Heathrow later this year, I've been advised it may change to Darwin-Heathrow, but if that happens then my ticket will be transferred to the new flight.

As for the travel sickness - try eating crystallised ginger, or bananas, both have worked for me in the past

Both my kids get airsick and they both were better with travel sickness tablets.  Ask the pharmacist which are best for preventing air sickness if you are worried about getting the right thing.

Travel sickness tablets definitely work.  They may make you feel very drowsy - not a problem while you're on the flight but may be risky as you're trying to navigate your way through the airport and go home at the end of the flight.

The other alternative is to take ginger tablets (available from health food stores).  Things like ginger biscuits or crystallised ginger work for some people but if you have serious travel sickness, you need the tablets because they're more concentrated.

Aha, travel sickness, know all about that one.  I have been known to use Avomine - 24 hour tablets until I discovered that you can buy (not cheap) Hyoscine patches (maybe called Scopolomine or Scopoderm) at UK pharmacies - I think you can buy 2 without a prescription and they are magic.  Stick them behind your ear and forget all about ever feeling queasy no matter how rough the trip. I dont think you can get them in Australia so I was agreeably surprised to find them OTC, albeit limited, in UK.  They last for around 48 hours so, being a miser I have cut mine in half and each half does me for the Aus/UK trip but if in doubt, put a whole one on and be sure.

I remember buying them in Australia years ago for a cruise and they did work. Maybe they just have another name here?

They used to be called Scop here but I tried to get some for one of my trips and they looked at me very  oddly. Might be able to get them on prescription but I haven't asked -yet!

I just did some research and you are right, they're not available in Australia.

It doesn't make sense, as scopolamine isn't banned.  You can buy Kwells, which is scopolamine in tablet form.   So why not the patches?

No idea but for we motion sickers they're bloody miraculous! Wonder if I've got one left!

Thanks so much, Quoll! I will be trying these for sure. You might just have transformed my long haul travel which I dread usually.

Thanks! I'll definitely be having a chat with the pharmacist. Glad they worked for your kids 🙂

Great, will give these a try too, thank you!

I think you learn more about a company when things go wrong than when they go right and for that reason Qantas will never see my money again, and judging by the sheer number of people on forums and twitter who had similar experiences with them over the past few months, there's a lot like that.  Appalling.   Impossible to get hold of for weeks and weeks on end.  Countless people sharing screen shots of being on hold for 5 hours only to have it disconnect.  Twitter customer services useless.  Months to return money on fully flexible fares - garbage.

By contrast over the last couple years trying to get to Australia from the UK my experience with Air China was first rate and Etihad not far behind. Very responsive and available.
