Tara Posted April 26, 2018 Share Posted April 26, 2018 Hi, after some advice please. We are moving out to Melbourne in September for husbands work, with our two young children. We tried (and failed) to live in Melbourne before the kids and my lasting memory was how competitive the rental market was. At that time we didn’t have jobs and also had two dogs but endless applications with bank statements, offers of 2/3 months rent upfront were rejected. Husbands work has offered to financially support the move for 2 months but not to find somewhere to live. Does anyone know if it’s possible to secure rental accommodation without actually being in the country, and if not, any suggestions as a short term solution? Guest The Pom Queen Posted April 26, 2018 Share Posted April 26, 2018 Hi Tara, the market isn’t as competitive as it was but it will depend on Suburbs, school catchment areas, etc. It is near impossible to find a rental before moving out and to be honest the way agents manipulate photos you wouldn’t want to. Most go in to short term furnished holiday accommodation, although it can be expensive it it gives you breathing space. Would your husbands employer be willing to pay for this? They’ve agreed to support 2 to 3 months but I don’t think they’re keen on finding it for us. Are there any specific companies that specialise ? Or should we just use air bnb? If the company are paying book a couple of weeks in a serviced apartment and look around when you get there. Here's one: https://www.corporatekeysaustralia.com.au/ If the company is offering to support you for 2 months, then ask them to book one of those apartments for the 2 months. Yes, the market is competitive in Melbourne but you should be able to find something in that time. When we arrived, it took us about 4 weeks to find a place. You had two major handicaps last time. Agents want secure tenants, so not having a job is a big negative. Also dogs used to be a no-no - you might get a rental with one, but two? Very hard. We still have one dog but we won’t be arriving until 2-3 months later....should we declare him or chance it and just sneak him home?! He’s very well behaved ? LKC Posted April 28, 2018 Share Posted April 28, 2018 We did, but OH's company paid for a relocation agent to sort it out for us. Our agent looked at houses on our behalf, took about a million photos of each which she sent to us, gave us an idea of condition of the house, information about the suburb, negotiated the rent to include a gardener and pool company to clean the pool, arranged furniture rental, and met us at the property to do the inventory and take photos for our deposit, with a big box of basics (loo roll, washing up liquid, tea towels, dishwasher tablets and things like that). It was quite expensive from memory, but it meant we didn't waste money renting an expensive holiday rental whilst we looked for somewhere. It probably worked out about even. Get a letter or email from the employer stating he's employed, that's all you need. Don't sneak the dog in, it's not worth the risk. That agency looks like a good idea, but in the OP's shoes, I'd still like to inspect the properties in person. starlight7 Posted May 4, 2018 Share Posted May 4, 2018 Don't get anything long term without looking at it first- much too risky. It is good to get a 'feel' for where you might want to be and a few trips round the burbs could help. Check train stations etc . Ask locals about safety, good areas, bad areas etc and where they wouldn't want to live! Buses aren't crash hot in many areas but trams are good.
