Shopping in Australia compared to the UK...

Can't beat Salvo's for everything from books to clothing. Great for fancy dress stuff too. Don't know what it's like in the UK now but there isn't the stigma here for buying second hand stuff, everyone loves a bargain. I've got my last two pairs of Levi's from Salvo's, both less than $20. Go over the Levi shop in the shopping centre and you pay $150 ish. Already worn in too.

Yes, I have a ten dollar fleeced jean jacket from Vinnies or Salvos in Hurstville, and an eight dollar pair of Billabong jeans from the Noffs shop here in Surry Hills. Actually, the jacket is not designer label, being Jay Jay Warehouse. Completing today's outfit is a lovely shirt Sandy and Rulla in the Royal Exhibition hotel bought me for my 60th birthday last year, and a pair of shoes my brother left behind when he went to Malaysia.

I bought a two foot high Superman in Vinnies for $20 or $25 and a 'Sparking Hot Rods' 'Scalextric-like' racing set for $20 in Noffs - don't know if it actually works yet. I can't resist buying stuff in charity shops.

Me either- I like nice pottery and I got a beautiful teapot last week ( made in England of course) for $10- looked at it on ebay and they had it for $60 and going up!

So in the UK we're lucky to have places like Argos, Wilkinsons, B&M, Home & Bargains etc where everything you need is under one roof & it's cheap, but what are the equivalent type of 'chain stores' in Australia?

Argos must have improved dramatically then. It was tripe when I lived in the UK.

Westfield Shopping Centers have everything under one roof. Some of them are small and some are massive: http://www.westfield.com.au/warringahmall

Chain stores are: Target, KMart, Aldi, Coles, Woolworths, Cheap as Chips, etc... on the upper end are Myers and David Jones.

Otherwise places like factory outlets are very cheap and very popular:

If you like M&S food, then somewhere like Thomas Dux or David Jones Food Hall fills that niche

Alexandria and Waterloo in Sydney also have factory outlets. Really good choice. Used to get a lot of my clothes for work there.
