ACMI, new David Bowie exhibition if that takes your fancy; National Gallery of Vic is worth a wander for a few hours. Immigration Museum might be interesting.

There's a few other things on in the city at the weekend too

Check out the network of lanes in the CBD. They have a great atmosphere, excellent coffee and yummy food. A couple of my favourites are Tattersalls Lane (great atmosphere at night and excellent Asian cuisine), Meyers Place (bars and entertainment), Centre Place (great for lunch and very photographic) and Hosier Lane (street art).

I also like taking a water taxi along the Yarra at night. The lights are really pretty and you get to see a side of Melb that lots of visitors miss.

My boys are going to the City V Roma game on the Tuesday. My boy decided to become a city fan (I support utd) .. I'm sure it's a rebellious streak and I do blame some English friends for his conversion. My daughter isn't into sport (although likes T/20) so we're going to have some mother/daughter time whilst the boys are at the game. We're there Sunday - Wednesday - our first visit and we're looking forward to it.

Eureka Skydeck day or night, to get view all over the city and beyond

The City Circle Tram

A nice walk along Southbank and stay around till about 8pm and see the flames shot out of some really big metal things lol

Try find one of the hidden gems of pubs there are a few around the City, Charles Dickson's is one we like to go

Crown Casino is also lovely with lots to do with families and lots of places to eat with a gorgeous views over the City

Docklands for Breakfast or lunch is great too

The Big wheel is in Docklands

Melbourne Markets are good to have a walk around

also agree with Freckleface

Anything that is inside its so cold presently. I was going to the city today but instead I am heading to Chadstone as its a warmer option. The Arcades are good, markets are open on weekend but not Monday. Fed Square Art gallery is somewhere I enjoy. Museum, State Library.

Depending on age, boys like the Police Museum. They might also be interested to see Ned Kelly's armour in the State Library. The MCG does excellent tours, and you can also go on a tour round Parliament. Explore on trams. Eat pizza on Lygon Street. Go to a grungey restaurant on Brunswick Street. All trams are free now in the city centre, so make use of them. Go shopping, Go to laneways. Visit Vietnamese grocers on Victoria Street and buy durian flavoured coconum candy. Go to the beach at St Kilda. Go to the Victoria Markets (Tuesday). Look at Captain Cook's Cottage. Go up the Eureka Tower but avoid The Edge (expensive and rubbish). Go to the zoo. Visit Old Melbourne Gaol. Look at the Shot Tower in Melbourne Central. Have a Lebanese feast at Tibas.

Plenty to do.

Just an update to say that we enjoyed our break in Melbourne - did an awful lot of walking. On first arriving and driving into the city the skyscrapers looked very dark. We stayed near the markets so had a great wander around there. Couldn't believe how busy it was in the CBD on Sunday - the shops were packed and a little too busy and claustrophobic for me (I tend to do my shopping first thing), but great buzz to the place. Did the MCG tour - quickest hour and 15 mins - so interesting with our guide who had been a member for almost 50 years and a delightful gent.

Only there for a short time - but would certainly re-visit and explore further afield.
